The present embodiments relate to a PMR write head with a trailing shield that comprises a FeCoNiM composition. The FeCoNiM composition can be formed via an electroplating process by adding Fe, Co, Niand a transition metal salt to an aqueous solution comprised of other additives in an electroplating cell that has an Ni or Co as the anode. The plated HD magnetic material as the trailing shield in a PMR writer can minimize a wide area track erasure (WATE). Further, a high moment high damping shield can lower bit error rate (BER) and increase aerial density capability (ADC) of the write head.

The present embodiments can generally provide a magnetic write head structure with optimized gap current distribution to maximize the current-assisted areal density capacity (ADC) gain in hard-disk-drive storage devices. In a first example embodiment, a non-dual-write-shield (nDWS) write head can include a main pole (MP), a trailing shield (TS), and a write gap (WG) disposed between the MP and the TS. The write head can also include a side shield (SS), a leading shield (LS), and a write shield (WS). The write head can include a side gap (SG) between the MP and the SS on both sides of the MP tip, and a leading gap (LG) between the MP and the LS. The write head can also include a coil wrapped around the MP through a PP3 shield that is configured to direct a time-dependent write current to saturate magnetization of the MP.

Optimizing a current distribution in write heads for efficient energy-assisted magnetic recording

A pad/trace line layout for a PMR writer structure having two or more writers on a slider, and a process for selecting the best of the multiple writers is disclosed. Each writer is individually probed with a spin stand test device to generate performance results including bit error rate (BER), and area density capability (ADC). After the best writer is determined, the slider is integrated in a HGA. Only the best writer is connected through trace lines to a preamp to enable functionality. At least one trace line has a plurality of arms that enable flexibility in connecting the best writer to the preamp while other arms are not connected. In some embodiments, all writers share a common W&#x2212; pad that is connected to the preamp through one of two trace lines while the other trace line has one of the plurality of arms connected to the best writer.

Designs for multiple perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) writers and related head gimbal assembly (HGA) process

A lapping guide system and method for lapping a merged read/write head are disclosed. The resistance Rof a first ELG near the sensor in the read head is correlated to the resistance Rof a second ELG and to the width of a first optical lapping guide (OLG) near the neck region of the write head. As the lapping progresses, Rand Rincrease and the OLG width along the lapping plane increases. Thus, an OLG width and a Rcorresponding to a target neck height or throat height and a Rcorresponding to a target stripe height are determined. A lapping plane is actively tilted to enable write head dimensions to be independently controlled on a per wafer or per row basis. The first OLG is a triangular feature with one side parallel to the lapping plane and the other two sides converging near the lapping plane.

The present invention provides a shared pole magnetic read/write head for achieving optimized erase band width and a method for fabricating same. It has been found that there exists a relationship between a quantity delta defined as the difference between the width of the first pole and the width of the second pole and the resultant erase band width. The method of the present invention optimizes the erase band width by adjusting the value of delta and results in a read/write head useful in circumstances where the servo does not require small erase bands such as those resulting from a self-aligned pole structure having equal widths. Additionally, the alignment of the second pole relative to the first pole is not of critical importance in the read/write head of the present invention, the first pole being wider than the second pole.

Shared pole magnetic read-write head for achieving optimized erase band width and method of fabricating the same

A method and system for providing a spin valve for use in a magnetoresistive head is disclosed. The method and system include providing a synthetic pinned layer, a nonmagnetic spacer layer, and a free layer. The free layer has a first magnetization canted from a first direction by a first angle. The nonmagnetic spacer layer is disposed between the free layer and the synthetic pinned layer. The synthetic pinned layer has a second magnetization in a second direction. The second direction is canted from a third direction that is transverse to the first direction by a second angle. The second magnetization is substantially orthogonal to the first magnetization.

Method and system for reducing assymetry in a spin valve having a synthetic pinned layer

A hybrid dual spin valve sensor includes a standard spin valve sharing a common free layer with a synthetic spin valve. The standard spin valve consists of a first antiferromagnetic layer having a first blocking temperature, a first soft ferromagnetic layer, a first spacer layer, and the common free layer. The synthetic spin valve consists of the common free layer, a second spacer, a second soft ferromagnetic layer, a third spacer layer, a third soft ferromagnetic layer, and a second antiferromagnetic layer having a second blocking temperature. Each of the two antiferromagnetic layers has a fixed magnetization orientation antiparallel to the other. A lead set configured to pass a sensing current from a current source through the hybrid dual spin valve, and a sensing circuit configured to measure changes in resistance within the hybrid dual spin valve, complete the sensor. A method for producing a hybrid dual spin valve sensor includes providing such a sensor wherein the magnetization orientations of the two antiferromagnetic layers are disordered, followed by processing at a first temperature and a second temperature. Processing at the first temperature is used to set the magnetization orientation of the antiferromagnetic layer with the higher blocking temperature. Processing at a lower second temperature is used to set the magnetization orientation of the antiferromagnetic layer with the lower blocking temperature such that it is antiparallel to the magnetization orientation of the antiferromagnetic layer with the higher blocking temperature.

Hybrid dual spin valve sensor and method for making same

A system and method for providing a spin valve is disclosed. The spin valve is formed on a substrate. In one aspect, the method and system include providing a seed layer including NiFe above the substrate and providing an antiferromagnetic layer on the seed layer. The seed layer provides the desired texture for the antiferromagnetic layer. The seed layer could include NiFeCr, NiFeNb, NiFeRh, or a NiFe/Cu multilayer. The method and system further include providing a pinned layer above the antiferromagnetic layer, the pinned layer being exchange coupled to the antiferromagnetic layer, providing a spacer layer above the pinned layer and providing a free layer above the spacer layer. In a second aspect, the method and system include providing a seed layer including Cu instead of NiFe. In a third aspect, the method and system include providing a synthetic antiferromagnetic layer in lieu of the antiferromagnetic layer and the pinned layer. In this aspect, the seed layer provides the desired texture for the synthetic antiferromagnetic layer. Note that in any aspect, the spin valve can include a bottom spin valve or a dual spin valve.
