A component of a downhole tool utilized in oil and natural gas exploration and production comprises inorganic hydrolysable compound-containing materials. The inorganic hydrolysable compounds grant the component the degradability/dissolution in aqueous environment. The inorganic hydrolysable compounds include, but not are limited to, hydrolysable carbides, nitrides, and sulfides, such as aluminum carbide (AlC), calcium carbide (CaC), magnesium carbide (MgCor MgCl), manganese carbide (MnC), aluminum nitride (AlN), calcium nitride (CaN), magnesium nitride (MgN), aluminum sulfide (AlS), aluminum magnesium carbide (AlMgCl), and aluminum zinc carbide (AlZnC).

Downhole tools comprising degradable components

A polycrystalline diamond and a polycrystalline diamond compact comprise nanostructured polycrystalline diamond particles (aggregates) and binder material. The nanostructured polycrystalline diamond particles (aggregates) are from starting raw materials of nanostructured polycrystalline diamond particles (aggregates) with a size of between 1 &#x3bc;m-40 &#x3bc;m. The polycrystalline diamond and the polycrystalline diamond compact may comprise micrometer-sized monocrystalline diamond particles. The binder material in the polycrystalline diamond or the polycrystalline diamond compact may be removed partially or completely by a leaching process. The method of making the polycrystalline diamond or the polycrystalline diamond compact comprises sintering diamond particles comprising the nanostructured polycrystalline diamond particles (aggregates) with a size of between 1 &#x3bc;m-40 &#x3bc;m under high temperature and high pressure in the presence of the binder material.

Polycrystalline diamond comprising nanostructured polycrystalline diamond particles and method of making the same

The present disclosure relates to a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter with protective barrier coating. The PDC cutter consists of an unleached or leached polycrystalline diamond (PCD) table, a cemented carbide body substrate, and a coating disposed on the cutter. The coating covers at least partially the exterior surfaces of the PCD table of the PDC cutter, and it may also extend over partially or entirely the exterior surfaces of the cemented carbide body. The coating is either a single layer or multilayer. The coating has a thickness of 0.4 &#x3bc;m-100 &#x3bc;m. The coating may have a strong metallurgical bonding with PDC cutter. The coating comprises an oxidation-resistant layer that protects the PDC cutter from thermal and mechanical degeneration during brazing and cutting applications. Methods for preparing such the coating comprise physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, thermoreactive deposition and diffusion, electrical plating, electroless plating, or their combinations.

Polycrystalline diamond compact cutters having protective barrier coatings

A heavy weight drill pipe may include a tube body formed of AISI 1340 alloy steel, and first and second tool joints at respective ends of the tube body, and which are formed of an AISI 41XX series alloy steel. The first and second tool joints may be welded to the tube body at a weld line within a weld region. A Charpy impact toughness at the weld line or surrounding weld region may be least 12 ft-lbs. (16.5 N-m). Yield and tensile strengths at the weld line or weld region may be at least 65 ksi (448.0 MPa) and at least 106 ksi (731.0 MPa), respectively. Material properties at the weld line or weld region may be achieved by heat treating after welding. Heat treating may include austenitizing, quenching, and tempering the weld line and/or the surrounding weld region.

Heat treated heavy weight drill pipe

A composite composition comprising tungsten carbide particles having a barrier coating and a binder is described, which is used as hardfacing materials. The tungsten carbide particles comprise at least one kind of cast tungsten carbide, carburized tungsten carbide, macro-crystalline tungsten carbide and sintered tungsten carbide. The barrier coating comprises at least one of metal carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides, carboborides, nitroborides and carbonitroborides. The binder alloys take one of the forms selected from a welding/brazing tube, rod, rope, powder, paste, slurry and cloth, which are suitable for being applied by various welding or brazing methods. The barrier coating would prevent or mitigate the degradation of the tungsten carbide particles due to attack of a molten binder alloy during a welding or brazing process.

Hardfacing containing tungsten carbide particles with barrier coating and methods of making the same

A heavy weight drill pipe for use in a downhole tool. The heavy weight drill pipe may include a tool joint made of as first steel alloy selected from the group consisting of AISI 4135, AISI 4137, AISI 4140, AISI 4142, AISI 4145, and AISI 4147. The tool joint may have as radial thickness between about 3.0 cm and about 5.7 cm. The heavy weight drill pipe may also include as pipe made of as second steel alloy selected from the group consisting of AISI 4135, AISI 4137, AISI 4140, AISI 4142, AISI 4145, and AISI 4147. The pipe may have a radial thickness between about 1.6 cm and about 3.3 cm. A weld region may be formed between the tool joint and the pipe. The weld region may be formed by friction welding the tool joint to the pipe.
