Techniques are described that detect areas with insufficient radio frequency (RF) coverage in a wireless network. A network management system (NMS) determines one or more service level expectation (SLE) metrics for each client device in a wireless network. The SLE metrics are aggregated to each access point (AP) in the wireless network, and each AP is assigned an AP score based on the aggregated SLE metrics. To identify potential coverage holes, the NMS groups APs having poor AP scores. If a root cause of the poor AP scores cannot be automatically resolved and if the poor AP scores persist for a predetermined period of time, the group of APs is determined to represent a true coverage hole. The NMS may generate a notification regarding recommended corrective actions to the customer and/or IT personnel.

Detection of insufficient RF coverage areas in a wireless network

Techniques are described by which a network management system (NMS) receives, from a plurality of access points (APs) configured to provide a wireless network, received signal strength indicator (RSSI) values. The NMS generates, based on the RSSI values, a graph of the plurality of APs, wherein the graph of the plurality of APs includes a plurality of clusters, wherein each cluster comprises a subset of the plurality of APs that are grouped based on strength of connectivity between the subset of the plurality of APs. The NMS generates, based on the graph, an upgrade plan to upgrade the plurality of APs, wherein the upgrade plan comprises a plurality of batches, wherein each batch includes a selection of at least one AP from each of one or more of the plurality of clusters. The NMS sends the upgrade plan to an orchestrator to execute the upgrade plan.

Automatic upgrade planning

Methods and apparatus for automatically reconfiguring network parameters are described. Some embodiments identify communication channels that may interfere with higher priority equipment and deactivate communication channels that may cause harmful interference. Some APs are switched to 2.4 GHz communication channels. In some embodiments, AP operating parameters, such as transmission power are adjusted to reduce interference for higher priority receivers.

Intelligent radio band reconfiguration for access points of a wireless network

An example system includes access point (AP) devices configured to provide a wireless network at a site; and a network management system that stores network data received from the AP devices, the network data collected by the AP devices or client devices associated with the wireless network, and one or more processors configured to: receive a time series of SLE metrics based on the network data, determine, based on the time series, whether a network event has occurred, in response to a determination that a network event has occurred, determine a root cause for the network event, and in response to a determination that the root cause of the network event is associated with an AP device, determine a classification of the AP device, and determine a network management action for the AP device based on the network event and the classification of the AP device.

Network management actions based on access point classification

The disclosed embodiments provide for management of a Wi-Fi network in the presence of a high priority receiver. When a high priory receiver is identified, a portion of the Wi-Fi network that could potentially interfere with the high priority receiver is identified and steps are taken to reduce the probability of such interference. For example, some wireless transmitters may be switched to alternate channels to reduce the probability of interference. By sharing information relating to high priority receivers across a plurality of wireless transmitters, the disclosed embodiments provide for more efficient operation in the presence of high priority receivers when compared to methods that independently detect a high priority receiver at each wireless transmitter.

Wi-Fi management in the presence of high priority receivers

Disclosed are methods and systems for improved wireless terminal roaming. In some embodiments, a management module determines access point density metrics for a plurality of centrally managed access points of a communications site. The density metric considers an average RSSI of access point signals received by other access points of the site, and each access point's contribution to the average. A determination of whether a particular wireless terminal roams is based on the density metrics of the source and target access point, as well as statistics relating to a current capacity of each of the access points. The disclosed embodiments may determine that a wireless terminal should transition/roam away from an access point even when that access point's RSSI value at the wireless terminal is above a threshold that would cause traditional methods to inhibit roaming.
