Color photographic element comprising residual magenta coupler scavenger ionizable epoxy compounds in combination with a specific class of image stabilizers are disclosed. Such elements comprise a support bearing thereon: (a) a photosensitive first layer comprising (i) a silver halide emulsion, (ii) a magenta coupler dispersion, and (iii) an image stabilizer of the following formula STG-A: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 represents an alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkenyl phenyl group, an aryl group, a heterocyclic group, an acyl group, a bridged hydrocarbon group, an alkyl sulfonyl group or an aryl sulfonyl group; R.sub.2 represents a group capable of being substituted on the benzene ring; r represents an integer between 0 and 4; and A represents a group of non metal atoms necessary for the formation of a 5 to 8 membered ring together with the nitrogen atom; and (b) a second layer comprising a dispersion of an epoxy compound of the structural formula SI: ##STR2## wherein R is H, an alkyl group, or an aryl group; L.sub.1 is an alkyl group or an aryl group; L.sub.2 is --O--, --CO--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --PO.sub.2 --, --CO.sub.2 --, --NHCO-- or --NHSO.sub.2 --, wherein L.sub.2 may be orientated in either direction; L.sub.3 is an alkyl group; m is 0 or 1; p is 0 or 1; and X is ##STR3## wherein R' is H or an alkyl or aryl group, with the proviso that where L.sub.2 comprises an ionizable group, X may also be an alkyl group or an aryl group. The photographic elements of the invention exhibit inhibited thermal and photochemical yellowing.

Color photographic element having improved image stability

Thermal and photochemical yellowing of a color photographic element, such as a color print, is inhibited by incorporating into the photographic element an ionizable epoxy compound having the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R is H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, or substituted aryl; L.sub.1 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, or substituted aryl; L.sub.2 is O, CO, S, SO.sub.2, PO.sub.2, C(O)O, NHCO or NHSO.sub.2 ; L.sub.3 is alkyl or substituted alkyl; m is 0 or 1; p is 0 or 1; X is selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## wherein: R' is H, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl, or, if L.sub.2 comprises an ionizable group, X is alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl.

Yellowing of a processed photographic element is inhibited by incorporating a scavenger comound capable of reacting with magenta coupler, e.g. an epoxy compound, in a layer adjacent a layer containing the magenta coupler. In a preferred embodiment, the magenta coupler containing layer is sandwiched between layers containing the scavenger compound. Prior to processing at least one of these layers contains a solubilizing agent for the scavenger compound. In preferred embodiments, the processing solution used to process the photographic element containing an external solubilizing agent for the scavenger compound, preferably benzyl alcohol.

Yellowing of a processed photographic element is inhibited by incorporating a scavenger compound capable of reacting with magenta coupler, e.g. an epoxy compound, in a layer adjacent a layer containing the magenta coupler. At least one of these layers contains a solubilizing agent for the scavenger compound. In preferred embodiments, the processing solution used to process the photographic element contains an external solubilizing agent for the scavenger compound, preferably benzyl alcohol.

The invention creates a selective oxygen barrier around individual coupler or other photographically active particles by surrounding each particle with a layer of water applicable oxygen barrier polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which will also act as a steric barrier to coalescence of the particles. A photographic element is disclosed containing one or more hydrophilic coatings thereon including an organic dye or precursor thereof dispersed in a water-immiscible solvent therefor. The solvent additionally includes therein a chelated-metal compound, termed a quenching compound, having a spectrophotometric absorption peak bathochromic relative to the absorption peak of the compound to be stabilized.

A photographic element is disclosed comprised of a support and at least one layer containing a photographic imaging dye or its precursor. The imaging dye is chosen to have an absorption peak below 590 nm. An azomethine dye having an absorption peak above 700 nm is associated with the imaging dye or its precursor within the photographic layer. The azomethine dye reduces the rate of fading of the imaging dye upon exposure to visible light. A process for stabilizing a photographic dye image is also disclosed.
