A crown closure and container comprising a glass container having a crown finish without threads, a closure comprising a rigid plastic outer shell and an inner cup-shaped liner. The outer shell comprises a top panel and a peripheral skirt. The liner is made of soft resilient plastic material and comprises a top wall and a peripheral wall. Interengaging cam surfaces are provided between the inner surface of the skirt of the shell and the outer surface of the peripheral wall of the liner such that when the closure is applied to the crown finish by an axial motion of the closure relative to the container, the liner if forced into the shell and the upper portion of the liner engages the crown finish of the container. The peripheral skirt of the outer shell is formed with threads so that the upper portion of the liner is forced into the threads and will allow for sufficient interference with the liner and finish to permit removal of the closure by rotation of the shell in relation to the liner.

Crown closures and containers

A child resistant package comprising a container and closure. The container has a side wall, a bottom wall and an open end. The closure includes an outer member and an inner member, the inner member having a portion thereof extending through an opening in the outer member such that axial pressure may be applied through this portion to move the inner member relative to the outer member in an axial direction. A liner insert sealingly engages the upper end of the container. The inner member and the liner have interengaging portions such that when the closure is removed from the container, the liner insert is also removed. A portion of the liner defines a spring between the liner and the inner member to yieldingly urging the inner member axially outwardly toward the outer member. The container has radially resilient portions on the upper end of the side wall, and the outer member includes a peripheral skirt having a rib adapted to engage the radial resilient portions on the container.

This invention provides a pre-tightening mechanism for effecting the initial application of a threaded closure on a threaded bottle neck. The pre-tightening mechanism includes a friction rail for effecting a turning movement of the closure relative to the bottle neck and a spring biased cap hold-down plate which maintains a substantially constant pressure on the closure and maintains the closure panel horizontal during the pre-tightening operation.

This invention provides substitute capping heads to apply a threaded closure on a bottle neck through the utilization of existing machines which were designed to apply an aluminum closure on a bottle neck by in situ formation of the threads in an aluminum shell. The modified capping heads embodying this invention utilize the same rotational and vertical movements of the capping heads relative to the containers, but effect a frictional engagement with a pre-formed, internally threaded plastic closure to effect the screwing of such closure onto a bottle neck with the effective application torque being limited by a slip clutch incorporated in the drive train of the modified capping head. Such clutch is isolated from ambient humidity conditions, and in some modifications operates in an oil bath.

The invention provides an improved cooling arrangement for the core pin of a commercially available injection molding machine permitting a significant reduction in the cycle time of such machine. The core pin is fabricated by the assembly of a plurality of concentric sleeve-like members, one of which is provided with six parallel helically disposed external grooves which respectively define three parallel passages for cooling fluid inlet and three parallel outlet passages for the heated fluid. The arrangement provides a significant increase in the quantity of cooling fluid flowing through the core pin, hence permits a significant decrease in cycle time of the injection molding machine.

Apparatus and method for the assembly of a two component home canning closure. One popular type of home canning closure utilizes a relatively thin lid to seal a jar with a threaded band holding the lid down. The gasket portion of the lid is relatively fragile. In the assembly of the two components in a manufacturing process for shipment to the consumer, the lids are handled gasket upmost the minimize possible damage. At an assembly station, the lids are rotated 180.degree. to present the gasket downward in the band for protection during shipment and storage.
