The present invention provides a fixture and method for mounting a head window to a frame for use in a submarine periscope system. The fixture supports the head window during the potting of the head window to the frame. A spring-loaded clamping plate is mountable to a baseplate for relative movement therebetween. The clamping assembly has an oval recessed portion. A plurality of spaced apart feet are formed within the oval. The feet support and are bonded to the head window. Shim stock are placed between the feet to define a critical gap.

An assembly which includes a rod having an outer peripheral surface. There is also a nut having an axial aperture with an inner peripheral surface moveably engageable with the peripheral surface on the outer peripheral surface of the rod and having a peripheral gear surface. There is also a circular drive gear, which engages the peripheral gear surface of the nut. The circular drive gear is rotatable about its central axis so that the nut is moved along the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical rod.

A system is provided for testing a flexible tube. First and second hollow mandrels are inserted into opposing ends of the tube. Each mandrel has a conically tapered portion at one end thereof and a cylindrical portion extending from the conically tapered portion. The cylindrical portion has a plurality of annular indentations formed thereabout. Each of a plurality of clamps encircle the tube in line with one annular indentation to sealably engage the tube. A fluid delivery system is coupled between the cylindrical portions of the mandrels to deliver a flow of fluid through the tube via the mandrels. A measured strain producing load, continuous or cyclical, is applied by an apparatus which controllably moves the first mandrel relative to the second mandrel such that a cross-sectional shape of the tube between the mandrels is altered.

A submarine periscope eyeguard housing assembly includes a viewing lens housing having a viewing lens aperture and viewing lens therein, first and second arm members fixed to the viewing lens housing and extending therefrom, a first blinder mounted on the first arm member, and a second blinder mounted on the second arm member. A first eyeguard is mounted on the first blinder for engagement by a left eye area of a viewer's head, and a second eyeguard is mounted on the second blinder for engagement by a right eye area of the viewer's head. A third eyeguard is rotatably mounted on the viewing lens housing and is adapted to be rotated into a selected one of a first position complementary to the first eyeguard and a second position complementary to the second eyeguard.

In a lens assembly and housing therefor for use in conjunction with an optical apparatus, the lens assembly includes a lens frame of nonferrous material and defining a window having a lip therein along a periphery of the window, a lens disposed in the window and adjacent the lip, a pair of spaced magnets on the frame, and a grip formed on the frame. The housing includes first and second walls opposed to each other and in part defining a pocket, the first wall being nonferrous and the second wall being magnetically permeable, the pocket being adapted to receive the lens assembly with the grip of the frame extending beyond the pocket. The magnets interact with the magnetically permeable second wall of the pocket to releasably retain the lens assembly in the lens assembly housing.

In combination, a male, multiple connection-type, electrical connector, a female, multiple connection-type, electrical connector, and a connector guide for facilitating blind interconnection of the male and female connectors. The male electrical connector comprises a submarine periscope eye box mating end electrical connector. The female electrical connector comprises a submarine periscope mast mating end electrical connector. The connector guide comprises a wall adapted to slidingly engage outside surfaces of the female connector, and an outwardly flared skirt extending from an edge of the guide wall opposed to the eye box mating end. The connector guide is slidable onto the female connector and the male connector is slidable into the connector guide and is guided thereinto by the connector guide skirt, and is guided by the connector guide into the female connector, such that the eye box connector elements engage the mast connector elements.

An eyecup assembly for a submarine periscope blinder assembly includes an annularly-shaped ring having a multiplicity of holes, which are unthreaded, extending therethrough and adapted to receive screws for securing the eyecup assembly to a like multiplicity of holes which are threaded and arranged in a circular pattern around an eyepiece opening in the blinder assembly, the ring defining a central viewing opening. An eyecup lateral shell circumscribes the eyecup chamber and is fixed to the ring and configured to conform generally to an eye area of a viewer's head, and to be interchangeably mounted to the threaded holes to receive either the viewer's left or right eyes by selectively indexing the holes in the ring 180&deg; apart relative to the threaded blinder assembly holes.

A U-shaped bracket has bearings holding a rotatable shaft. The shaft supps a pair of conical disks with their apexes facing each other along the shaft. Nuts are positioned along the shaft outside of the cones to position the cones. A cylindrical strength piece and a cylindrical test piece are inserted over the shaft with the test piece being outermost. The nuts tighten the disks against the test piece with the strength piece being of such a size to inhibit the disks from damaging the test piece. The bracket has an extension affixed to it that is attached to a testing machine. The cylindrical test piece is suitable for rotation and has a coating bonded to it. The testing machine peels the coating at a constant 90.degree. angle from the test piece and measures the peel strength upon the test piece being rotated.

There is disclosed a method for making a vibration dampener, the dampener cluding a body for disposition between two relatively movable members, the body being formed from a carrier of a gel material and particles having electrorheological properties embedded in the carrier with the particles electrically aligned and pseudo-bonded. The dampener is made by passing a current through a mixture of the particles and the carrier while the carrier cures into a gel material.

Sonar array cable is typically provided in lengths comprising hydrophone ays and associated electronics and transmitter can components, each cable length or section having one of each of these components housed therein. These sections are relatively stiff and unbendable, requiring that they be connected with relatively bendable intermediate segments. These intermediate segments are susceptible to excessive bending that can lead to failure of the wiring provided therebetween. The wiring in these intermediate bendable segments is provided in the form of a coil, each of which coils is rigidly connected to the transmitter and electronics in one cable section, and the other end of the coil being connected electrically to the wiring associated with the hydrophone array in an adjacent cable section. Each coil is encased in relatively soft urethane material, preferably in one portion of the bendable segment, another portion of the bendable segment having the coil connected at its other end to a relatively stiff urethane material associated with the transmitter can and associated electronics.

A quick-pour container of the present invention includes a base portion, a ody portion extending upwardly from the base portion, and a spout portion integrally formed with the body portion. The spout portion has a mouth through which fluid contained in the container flows when emptying it. An upwardly extending neck portion is formed in the base portion, the neck portion defining a downwardly opening cavity. An annular wall of the neck portion terminates at its upper end to define an opening which is closed by a membrane attached to the neck portion to contain fluid in the container. A puncturing device controls and quickens the flow of fluid from the container when emptying it. The puncturing device has a member movable by manual manipulation between a fluid stored position in which it is spaced from the membrane to a puncturing position in which the member moves through the opening to puncture the membrane for allowing gas to be vented into the container when emptying the fluid from the container thereby controlling and quickening the flow of fluid therefrom.

Apparatus is provided for conducting flexure tests on a rectangular test m. The apparatus includes a bearing apparatus, a support structure for supporting a beam for deflection, and a deflection guide for flexing the test beam at a predetermined point. The bearing apparatus includes a pintle and a roller bearing axially mounted on a first end of the pintle. The second end of the pintle is mounted in the jaws of the chuck lathe for eccentric rotation of the roller bearing. The support structure includes two locating brackets for supporting the ends of the test beam. The support structure further includes caging apparatus for caging movement of the test beam. The deflection guide is positionable on top of the test beam between the locating brackets, so that a central impeller element faces the upper surface of the test beam. When the bearing makes contact with the deflection guide during eccentric rotation the impeller element engages and flexes the test beam at a mid-point thereof. The supporting and caging structures are constructed and arranged so that the test beam is not constrained along any surface thereof. The apparatus may further include a mechanical cycle counter for counting the revolutions or cycles of the lathe device.

Apparatus for conducting fatigue tests using a conventional lathe device

There is disclosed a vibration dampener comprising a body for disposition tween two relatively movable members, the body being formed from a carrier of a gel material and particles having electrorheological properties embedded in the carrier with the particles electrically aligned and pseudo-bonded. Upon a displacement force being applied to the body, as by one of the members, the particles resist motion relative to other of the particles. There is further disclosed a method for making the aforesaid vibration dampener wherein the dampener has a current passed through it while the carrier cures into a gel material.

Vibration dampener

A weld joint test fixture for testing the strength of a weld joining seve members forming a test specimen is provided. The fixture includes a base which supports the test specimen and an attachment for applying a testing force to the test specimen while the test specimen is supported by the base. The fixture further includes holding elements attached to the base for holding the test specimen on the base during the application of the testing force. The holding elements preferably engage one of the members forming the test specimen without engaging another of the members. The fixture may also include the holding elements being designed to oppose the testing force substantially only by forces directed in a plane parallel to the applied testing force.
