An amorphous-based material component may be incorporated into a liner for a shaped charge used in perforating a wellbore casing. Other components of the shaped charge and/or perforating gun that accommodates the shaped charge may be of amorphous-based materials. Further, the liner and other components of the shaped charge may be manufactured by way of three dimensional printing. Indeed, a multi-material three dimensional print application may be utilized to form shaped charge components simultaneously along with an entire perforating gun system.

Amorphous shaped charge component and manufacture

A technique facilitates perforation, including the perforation of a casing and formation. A shaped charge is formed with a case, a liner, and a high explosive material located between the case and the liner. The liner is formed of a powder material, e.g. a powder metal material. The powder material properties of the liner between an apex of the liner and a skirt of the liner may be selectively varied to provide a desired jet velocity and jet mass of the liner upon detonation of the high explosive material.

A shaped charge includes a charge case; a liner; an explosive retained between the charge case and the liner; and a primer core disposed in a hole in the charge case and in contact with the explosive, wherein at least one of the case, the liner, the primer core, and the explosive comprising a material soluble in a selected fluid. A system where a group of substantially universal pre-manufactured explosive pellet assemblies are provided for on-site forming of shaped charges. That is, a specifically tailored liner may also be separately provided to the worksite/oilfield and combined with any one of the pellet assemblies so as to form a shaped charge having characteristics that are determined by the particular liner used. In this manner, hazardous shipping of fully assembled shaped charges may be avoided while at the same time allowing the operator a full range of shaped charge performance options based on the availability of uniquely tailored performance determinative liners that are also provided to the oilfield location.

A method for perforating in a well includes disposing a perforating gun in the well, wherein the perforating gun comprises a shaped charge having a charge case, an explosive disposed inside the charge case, and a liner for retaining the explosive in the charge case, wherein the liner includes a material that can react with a component of an earth formation; detonating the shaped charge to form a perforation tunnel in a formation zone; and allowing the material comprising the liner to react with the component of the earth formation.

A radial-linear shaped charge pipe cutter is constructed with the booster explosive packed intimately into a booster aperture that is bored axially through the charge upper end plate. The cutter explosive is initiated at the interface between the upper margin of the cutter explosive and the contiguous inside surface of the upper end plate. This interface is within a critical initiation distance from the half charge juncture plane. In one embodiment, a half charge liner is configured as the assembly of two, coaxial, frusto-cones with the smaller cone diverging from the half charge juncture plane at a smaller angle than the outer cone. In another embodiment, the liner thickness increases from the juncture plane out to the liner perimeter.

A shaped charge has a case defining a volume therein. A liner is located in the volume. An explosive is located between the case and the liner. The liner defines an interior volume and an opening thereto. The liner also has an apex portion that is distal from the opening. The liner has a first thick portion and a second thick portion. A thin portion is located between the first thick portion and the second thick portion in a direction extending from the apex portion along the liner toward the opening. The thin portion is thinner than the first thick portion and thinner than the second thick portion.

A liner for a shaped charge is disclosed which comprises a plurality of portions, where at least one portion is composed of powder materials. In one embodiment, the liner comprises two portions that are composed of different powder materials, while alternative embodiments of the liner comprise three portions or four portions. When the shaped charge is used in a perforating gun, reactive powder materials may be added to the plurality of portions of the liner to optimize the penetration or the enhancement of the perforating tunnel.

Liner for shaped charges

An apparatus that is usable with a well includes a perforating system that is adapted to be fired downhole in the well. The perforating system includes a component, which includes an alloy that has a negative corrosion potential and is unable to passivate, or self-protect, while deployed in the well. The component is adapted to disintegrate to form substantially no debris in response to the firing of the perforating system.
