Adjusting a charging rate of battery of an information handling system, the method comprising: determining, at a first time, a first accumulation of time over a first time period that i) a state of charge (SOC) of the battery indicates that the battery is fully charged and that ii) the battery is connected to a power source; comparing the first accumulation of time with a time threshold; determining, based on the comparing, that the first accumulation of time is greater than the time threshold, and in response: decreasing a charging voltage of the battery from a nominal level to a first decreased level; charging the battery based on the charging voltage having the first decreased level.

Adjusting a charging rate of a battery of an information handling system

Battery status monitoring and battery management of an information handling system

A battery pack for an information handling system includes a battery cell configured to provide current to the information handling system, and a battery management unit including an output to the information handling system. The output provides a maximum continuous current (MCC) indication and a peak power (PP) indication. The battery management unit determines an amount of current that the battery cell provides to the information handling system and determines an optimum MCC value that the battery cell can provide to the information handling system. The battery management unit further provides a first value on the PP indication, the first value being greater than the optimum MCC value, sums the amount of current provided to the information handling system that is in excess of the optimum MCC value, determines that the sum is greater than a threshold, and provides a second value on the PP indication, the second value being less than the optimum MCC value.

Intelligent battery power discharge management

An information handling system is configured to implement a battery management method and perform battery management operations including receiving information indicative of an operating system associated with the information handling system and determining a battery behavior environment (BBE) based, at least in part, on the operating system. A battery management unit (BMU) profile associated with the battery behavior environment may be selected, wherein the BMU profile indicates settings for one or more battery management parameters. The BMU is then configured in accordance with the BMU profile and the battery is managed in accordance with the BMU profile.

A power adaptor system may comprise a power source supplying input voltage according to a dynamic power rating to an operably connected host information handling system, a power source identification (PSID) module of the power adaptor receiving an adjustable setting voltage from the power source via a setting voltage port of the PSID module, and a controller of the PSID module executing code instructions to select the dynamic power rating for the power source based on a measurement of the adjustable setting voltage indicating an operating condition of the power adaptor or based on an indication of an operating condition the operably connected host information handling system, wherein the dynamic power rating is one of a plurality of dynamic power ratings in including an adjustable range of power levels at each dynamic power rating at which the power source is capable of operating.

System and method for dynamically identifying a power adaptor power rating based on operating conditions

Systems and methods may be implemented separately from (and external to) a battery system to detect swollen battery system components within a chassis enclosure of the information handling system, without any physical contact with the battery cells or battery system, and without requiring premature opening of the information handling system chassis enclosure to inspect for battery system swelling. A system user may be automatically warned of detected battery system swelling and/or battery system charging may be automatically terminated upon detected battery system swelling so that information handling system failure and/or system service costs that would otherwise be expended to repair damage caused by swollen battery system components may be prevented.

Systems and methods for detecting battery system swelling in information handling systems

The present disclosure provides various embodiments of an external power supply and methods to enhance the output power delivered by an external power supply to a power consuming load. As described in more detail below, the embodiments disclosed herein enable an external power supply to deliver a higher than maximum output power for short periods of time when ambient temperatures within the external power supply are low. As the ambient temperature increases, the embodiments disclosed herein throttle (or incrementally reduce) the output power delivered by the external power supply until the maximum output power specified for the power supply is reached. Although not strictly limited to such, the external power supply may be a Universal Serial Bus (USB)-enabled AC/DC adapter, and more specifically, a USB Power Deliver (USB-PD) AC/DC adapter, in some embodiments.

External power supply and method to enhance the output power delivered by an external power supply

As an example, a power supply may provide a particular voltage of multiple voltages based on a power profile provided by a universal serial bus Type C (USB-C) integrated circuit (IC) built-in to a USB-C port of a computing device. A power factor correction (PFC) converter may provide an output voltage that varies according to the power profile. The output voltage of the PFC converter may be used as an input to an inductor-inductor-capacitor (LLC) converter. The LLC converter may produce an output voltage that varies in voltage level proportionally to the PFC converter output voltage. The PFC converter may provide a voltage to the LLC converter that causes the LLC converter to provide an amount of voltage indicated in the power profile sent by the USB-C IC of the computing device.

Providing a wide variety of voltages with a power supply that uses an LLC topology

Systems and methods for controlling a power adaptor Light-Emitting Diode (LED) indicator are described. In some embodiments, a method may include: detecting a coupling of a power adaptor to a voltage source; setting a plurality of transistors in a first configuration, where the first configuration provides power an LED coupled to the power adaptor via a cable; detecting a de-coupling of the power adaptor from the voltage source; and setting the plurality of transistors in a second configuration, where the second configuration ceases to provide power to the LED.

A computer-implemented method extends the time until the battery reaches an over-discharged state of an information handling system during storage. The method comprises determining if a first battery parameter is outside an associated first battery parameter specification. When the first battery parameter is outside the associated first battery parameter specification, a power management controller isolates the battery by turning off a charge/discharge field effect transistor. The method also includes determining if the first battery parameter is outside an associated second battery parameter specification. In response to the first battery parameter being outside the associated second battery parameter specification, the power management controller is triggered to enter a minimum power state to further reduce power consumption from the battery.

Battery management system and method for extending time until a battery reaches an over-discharged state during storage of an information handling system

Systems and methods for enhancing peak power capability and hold-up time in a resonant converter having a LLC topology may include a couple choke transformer circuit that may control an inductance of the couple choke transformer circuit and improve power efficiency of the resonant converter. The resonant converter may also include a resonant tank circuit that may provide improved peak power delivery of the resonant converter. The resonant converter may further include a resonant tank control circuit to control the resonant tank circuit and may increase the peak gain of the resonant converter, increase a voltage range of the input voltage, and extend a hold-up time of the input voltage when an AC power failure occurs.

Enhancing peak power capability and hold up time in LLC topology application

A zero voltage switching method for a flyback converter featuring a transformer with first and second primary windings and corresponding turns ratios, N1 and N2, includes rectifying and filtering an AC signal to produce a primary DC voltage. A voltage level signal indicating whether the primary DC voltage falls within a particular voltage range is generated. The voltage level signal is used to select a particular primary winding from either the first primary winding or the second primary winding. A PWM controller corresponding to the particular primary winding is activated and an output of the particular PWM controller performs zero voltage switching of a gate terminal of the applicable main switching transistor. A duty cycle of the main switching transistor is maintained within a range of approximately 50% to approximately 60% in accordance with the turns ratio and the primary DC voltage to achieve a desired output voltage.

Zero voltage switching flyback converter

A battery system for a portable information handling system may modify charging parameters based on temperature exposure of a battery. When the battery is charged and exposed to a high temperature, the battery may be discharged to a lower voltage. After a cumulative period of exposure to a high temperature, a top-of-charge (TOC) voltage may be permanently reduced for the battery. Prior to charging at a high temperature, the TOC voltage may be reduced for a next charge cycle. Reducing the TOC voltage may minimize adverse effects for battery performance.

Battery performance under high temperature exposure

An information handling system power adapter removably couples with a multi-axis plug that rotates between storage, wall socket and power strip positions. The storage position rotates prongs that insert into a power socket so the prongs are retracted into the power adapter, rotates prongs to plug into a wall socket so that the power adapter aligns parallel to the wall having the wall socket, and rotates the prongs to plug into a power strip socket so that the power adapter aligns perpendicular to the power strip having the socket. The multi-axis plug inserts into a power cable receptacle of the power adapter so that an end user may selectively remove the multi-axis plug and insert a power cable that terminates at a plug to connect the power adapter with a power socket through the power cable.
