A knife is provided. The knife comprises a handle and a blade configured to pivot with respect to the handle between an open position wherein a cutting edge of the blade is exposed and a closed position wherein the cutting edge of the blade is disposed within the handle, the blade including an abutting surface. The knife may further comprise a locking assembly configured to releasably lock the blade in the open position, the locking assembly comprising a biased, rotatable member having a canted surface for engaging a corresponding surface on the blade, wherein the canted surface and the corresponding surface are configured to secure the blade relative to the handle in the open position.

Side blade lock and release mechanism for use with a knife

A self-loading utility knife including an elongate handle having an internal chamber defining an axis and at one end is flat aperture for the passage of an active blade. The flat aperture defines a cutting plane extending through said handle along the axis. A blade-holder is slidably mounted in the chamber for movements in directions along the axis and is adapted to secure a single active blade for movement through the aperture when the blade holder is in the extended position. A blade-holder release button is coupled to the blade holder and is slidingly movable relative to the handle to move blade holder between retracted and extended positions. The handle has a blade compartment which is open to the chamber and can receive a stack of spare blades when a cover to the compartment is opened and blades can be shifted transversely relative to the axis into the chamber. The blade holder is provided with a recess having a depth no greater than the thickness of one blade to allow at least a portion of a single blade to be received in a retaining relationship within the recess to cause an end-most blade in the stack to be received within said recess to follow the movements of the blade holder. A spring biases the blades in the blade compartment inwardly in the direction of the blade holder. A blade releasing disc on the blade holder selectively locks a blade to the blade holder when the blade holder is in the extended position. The blade holder only receives a single blade within the recess. A belt clip s provided on the compartment cover.

Self loading utility knife

A utility knife has a handle generally defining a handle axis and a remote end provided with an opening. A carriage is slidably mounted within the handle for selective movements through the opening between a retracted position in which the carriage is substantially fully received within the handle and a fully extended position in which the carriage is fully extended through the opening to increase the effective length of said handle by a distance &#x394;l. A blade mounted on the carriage shares the movements of the carriage and has an operative portion that can fully penetrate a work to be cut when the handle axis is inclined at an angle &#x3b1; relative to a surface of the work. A finger of a user most proximate to the work surface is positionable a distance h above the work surface during normal use of the utility knife, &#x394;l and &#x3b1; being selected so that the distance &#x394;l is generally greater that 1.0 inch and the angle &#x3b1; is equal to at least 35&#xb0;.
