An adaptable garment material and method of producing such a material. The material may have a substrate and a plurality of shape memory polymer elements integrated therewith, or may be a mat of interwoven shape memory polymer elements. The shape memory elements adapt in the presence of an actuation trigger and exhibit different properties upon actuation.

A helmet has an outer shell, an inner lining configured for thermal communication with a wearer's head, an intermediary layer disposed between the outer shell and the inner lining with a layer of insulating material with a plurality of passageways therein and a cavity defined by the outer shell and the outer surface of the intermediary layer, and a fluid contained between the outer shell and the inner lining. In another variation, the insulating material includes a shape memory polymer operable to change the size of one or more of the plurality of passageways when activated. In yet another variation, the helmet has one or more selectively closeable pores in its outer shell and may have a fixed or detachable fluid reservoir.

Apparatus and method for controlling temperature with a multimode heat pipe element

An exhaust system that processes exhaust generated by an engine includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is disposed downstream of the engine and that filters particulates from the exhaust. An electrical heater is integrally formed in an upstream end of the DPF and selectively heats the exhaust to initiate combustion of the particulates within the exhaust as it passes therethrough. Heat generated by combustion of the particulates induces combustion of particulates within the DPF.

This invention relates to a fuel reforming apparatus for producing a carbon-monoxide free reformed fuel gas comprising hydrogen. More particularly, this invention relates to nonthermal plasma reactors for removing carbon monoxide from a reformed fuel gas produced from a fuel containing bonded atoms of hydrogen exiting a reformer. More particularly, this invention relates to nonthermal plasma reactors for reforming a fuel containing bonded atoms of hydrogen into a reformed fuel gas. This invention relates further to hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells, which comprise a fuel reformer for reforming a fuel into a reformed fuel gas comprising hydrogen, a carbon monoxide remover for removing carbon monoxide in the reformed fuel gas and supplying the reformed fuel gas to the fuel cell.

Fuel reforming apparatus for producing a carbon-monoxide free reformed fuel gas comprising hydrogen

A diesel particulate filter including a microwave-absorbing target housed within a waveguide cavity lined along the walls with a hard-electromagnetic surface (HES). The HES modifies specific electromagnetic boundary conditions for a given design frequency so as to enable the establishment of electromagnetic field patterns which are more uniform across the cavity thereby causing the target material to undergo enhanced uniformity heating. The heating of the microwave absorbing media causes particulate buildup to be vaporized and removed from the filter by the exhaust stream flow.

A microwave system having a microwave source that generates microwave signals for regenerating a diesel particulate filter (DPF) includes a sampling device that samples a power level of reflected microwave signals from the DPF and a regulator module that communicates with the microwave source and the sampling device. The regulator module further adjusts operation of the microwave source based on the power level of the reflected microwave signals and a predetermined power threshold.

A method and apparatus for creating uniform heating of an microwave absorptive target. A microwave housing has a longitudinal axis and propagates a waveguide mode at an operating frequency. The target is located in an axial cross-sectional area relative to the longitudinal axis. First layer conductive strips are layered proximal to an inner wall of the microwave housing, substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and being separated from an adjacent first layer conductive strip by a respective first layer gap, the inner wall acting as a ground plane. Second layer conductive strips are layered proximal to the first layer of conductive strips, parallel to the longitudinal axis and being separated from an adjacent second layer conductive strip by a respective second layer gap. Each first layer gap is centered under a respective second layer conductive strip and each second layer gap is centered over a conductive layer.

Meta-surface waveguide for uniform microwave heating

Disclosed herein is an arrangement for shielding electronic sensors from undesired microwave or millimeter wave radiation. In this arrangement, reflective element is disposed in the sensor path to intercept incoming signals. The reflective element has a pluraity of adjacent parallel ridges therein having sloped faces angled for reflecting incoming desired infrared radiation onto the sensor. The width of the ridges are selected so that desired signals will be reflected by the sloped ridge faces but undesired microwave or millimeter radiation will be reflected by the overall major surface of the mirror. Accordingly, undesired microwave or millimeter radiation will be reflected away from the sensor by the overall front major surface thereby preventing the sensor from being damaged.

Radiation power limiter

A microwave window structure for a low-pressure chamber is provided. The window structure enables microwave energy to be introduced into the chamber from a source external to the chamber. The window structure includes a fixture having electrically conductive walls. Inner portions of the walls provide a peripheral region of an aperture within such fixture. The fixture is adapted for mounting to a sidewall portion of the chamber. A solid, microwave energy transparent dielectric window is included. The window includes: a periphery portion affixed to the fixture; and, an inner region disposed within the aperture of the fixture.

High-power microwave window

A photocatalytic coating based on titanium dioxide, and certain titanates is applied to the critical external optical spacecraft surfaces to be protected from contamination with polymerized hydrocarbon films. The thickness of the coating is within the range of 5 Angstrom to 2&times;10 Angstrom and it can be applied using a variety of methods, such as sputtering, electron beam evaporation, or sol-gel processing. A method for cleaning the spacecraft surfaces initiated by a reaction of the coating with a UV-photon, followed by oxidation of the hydrocarbons adsorbed on the protected surfaces thus preventing their polymerization on the surfaces and causing their safe evaporation and dissipation into the environment. At orbital altitudes a stream of H O or oxygen is directed at the surface, possibly continuously, and preferably, periodically, regenerating the original form of titanium in the photocatalytic coating and re-starting the cleaning cycle. The surfaces at orbital altitudes are cleaned by a combined action of the coating and oxygen.

Photocatalytic coating and method for cleaning spacecraft surfaces

Cryofilm/organic contaminants are removed from cryogenically cooled surfaces such as spacecraft cryo-telescope mirrors by sputtering and chemical reaction with a low energy plasma having an average ion energy of not more than about 30 eV, and preferably in the approximate range of 5-20 eV. When the reactive plasma's freezing point is higher than the temperature of the surface to be cleaned, the cryofilm and embedded hydrocarbons are first removed with a non-reactive plasma having a freezing point less than the surface temperature, the reactive plasma is then used to remove residual organic contaminants left on the surface by chemical reaction, and finally another inert plasma is applied to remove reactive plasma frozen to the surface; the two inert plasmas are preferably formed from the same gas.

A solid-state power processor circuit and method is used to supply power to generate a discharge in a corona discharge pollutant destruction apparatus. The circuit uses field effect transistors (FETs) and integrated circuit devices based upon metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) technology to amplify low-voltage pulse signals to high voltage levels. A resonator in the power processor circuit generates sinusoidal oscillation from the high voltage pulses, and provides the high-voltage, high-frequency electrical power necessary for corona discharge.

Automatic control method for corona discharge pollutant destruction

A corona discharge pollutant destruction reactor employs two or more electrodes to enhance the effective corona discharge treatment volume by distributing a varying electric field pattern over the reactor's interior chamber. Appropriate delay circuitry allows the inner electrodes to be driven out of phase with each other by a sinusoidal voltage waveform, or corona producing voltage pulses to be cyclically supplied to the inner electrodes in sequence, preferably without overlapping the pulses.
