An extraction solvent comprised of one or more ethyleneamines having structure (I), (II), or (III): where R-Rcan independently be H, C-Clinear or branched alkyl, amido (RRNC&#x2550;O), or hydroxyalkyl, where each R in the amido group independently H or Calkyl, and where x ranges from 1 to 6, may be contacted with a hydrocarbon stream to remove or extract non-acidic contaminants, such as thiophenes, benzothiophenes, alkyl sulfides, alkyl disulfides, mercaptans, aromatics, oxygenates, metals, olefins, and combinations thereof, from the hydrocarbon stream. The extraction solvent may include co-solvents and the hydrocarbon stream may be in gas and/or liquid form.

Methods and compounds for removing non-acidic contaminants from hydrocarbon streams

Treatment of hydrocarbon streams, e.g. gasoline, with basic ionic liquids (ILs), results in reduction of the sulfur compounds such as HS thiophenes, disulfides, thioethers, and/or mercaptans that are present to remove these compounds. The IL is a quaternary ammonium compound having the formula RNXor XRNR'NRX, where R is independently an alkyl group, an alkylbenzyl group, a hydroxyalkyl group, or a hydroxyalkylbenzyl group, and R is straight or branched and has 1-22 carbon atoms, R&#x2032; is a straight or branched alkylene or oxyalkylene having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and where Xcan be hydroxide, carbonate, alkylcarbonate, bicarbonate or alkoxide, where the alkyl group of the alkylcarbonate or alkoxide, if present, is straight or branched and has 1 to 8 carbon atoms. The ILs can be used in applications where liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fluids are treated by direct injection or by extraction.

Ionic liquid-based hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan scavengers

An effective hydrogen sulfide scavenger that produces little corrosion may be prepared by reacting glyoxal with a compound having at least two primary or secondary amine groups. The subject hydrogen sulfide scavengers may be used with both the production of crude oil and natural gas, and the refining of same.

Hydrogen sulfide scavenger for use in hydrocarbons

Hydrogen sulfide evolution from asphalt may be reduced or eliminated using an additive to act as a scavenger. Zinc oxide, when present in the form of nano-particles is an effective component is preventing or mitigating the evolution of hydrogen sulfide from asphalt. Zinc sulfonate may also be used. Method for reducing hydrogen sulfide evolution from asphalt

Disclosed is composition useful for reducing the concentration of mercaptans in hydrocarbons comprising: (A) a first diazo component and (B) a second component comprising a nucleophilic acceptor. The composition can be added to hydrocarbons such as fuel oil to reduce mercaptans without increasing turbidity or color. Triethylene diamine and 1,2-epoxyhexadecane are disclosed to be exemplary diazo and nucleophilic acceptor components.

Hydrocarbons having reduced levels of mercaptans and method and composition useful for preparing same

The present invention provides a method for inhibiting the evolution of HS from sulfhydryl compounds in molten sulfur by using scavenging agents such as anhydrides and polymers thereof, conjugated ketones, carbonates, epoxides, monoesters and diesters of unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and polymers of these esters, and the like and mixtures thereof. In one embodiment, it is preferred that the scavenging agent is in liquid form at contact temperature with the molten sulfur. In another embodiment, the scavenging agent may be atomized into the vapor space over the molten sulfur to contact the sulfur with the agent.
