Persistent infrared (IR) phosphors are disclosed. In an embodiment a phosphor has the general formula: M1GaM2O:xSb,yM3,zD,kM4, wherein M1 is chosen from magnesium, calcium, barium, strontium, zinc, scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, gadolinium, lutetium, or bismuth, or combinations thereof; M2 is chosen from silicon, germanium, tin, titanium, zirconium, or combinations thereof; M3 is chosen from magnesium, aluminum, indium, scandium, or combinations thereof; M4 is chosen from praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, or combinations thereof; D is chosen from chromium, iron, nickel, manganese, or cobalt, or combinations thereof; and wherein 1&#x2264;m&#x2264;4; 1&#x2264;n&#x2264;3; 0&#x2264;p&#x2264;5; 0.0002&#x2264;x&#x2264;2n; 0&#x2264;y&#x2264;2n; 0.0001&#x2264;z&#x2264;0.1; 0&#x2264;k&#x2264;0.1; and r is selected from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3.

Persistent infrared phosphors

Disclosed are smoothing phosphors for AC LED lighting that are capable of prolonging the light emission time of an AC LED (or array of AC LEDs) during a &#xbd; cycle response to a, phase change of the alternating current to substantially reduce flicker. The smoothing phoshor of the present teachings comprises a matrix represented by the formula: (&#x2212;k&#x2212;r&#x2212;v)M&#xb7;(m&#x2212;p)X&#xb7;(n&#x2212;0.5x&#x2212;0.5y)AlO:(x+p)MnO, ySiO, kEu, rR, vLi, wherein M is at least one of LaO, CeO, GdO, LuO, BaOF, SrOF, CaOF, BaOCl, SrOCl, CaOCl, BaO, SrO, CaO, or ZnO; provided that when M comprises BaO, SrO, CaO, or ZnO, M does not comprise LaO, CeO, GdO, LuO, BaOF, SrOF, CaOF, BaOCl, SrOCl, or CaOCl; X is at least one of MgO or ZnO; R is at least one of Sm, Pr, Tb, Dy, Er, or Ho; m=0 to 2; n=4 to 11; x=0.005 to 1; y=0.005 to 1; p=0 to 1; k=0 to 0.2; r=0 to 0.2; and v=0 to 0.2.

Smoothing phosphors for AC LED lighting

Phosphorescent compositions including silicate of alkaline earth materials which are modified by at least one halide are provided. The phosphorescent compositions may include 3d ions. A variety of embodiments may be realized. The appearance of some embodiments may be glassy (i.e., vitreous).

Photoluminescent phosphors wherein some of the oxygen anions in the phosphor matrix have been replaced by halides or nitride. In addition, photoluminescent phosphors wherein some of the oxygen anions in the phosphor matrix have been replaced by halides or nitride and a charge compensator has been included. The phosphors are based on green emitting and blue-green emitting aluminates.

Phosphorescent phosphors

The invention provides long-persistent phosphors, methods for their manufacture and phosphorescent articles. The invention also provides a method for generating a long-persistent phosphorescence at a selected color. The phosphors of the invention may be alkaline earth aluminates, alkaline earth silicates, and alkaline earth aluminosilicates. The phosphors include those activated by cerium. The phosphors also include those in which persistent energy transfer occurs from a donor ion to an acceptor ion, producing persistent emission largely characteristic of the acceptor ion.
