An adsorber material element is used relieve a vacuum that results from cooling of heated contents in a sealed container. An interior volume of that container may be filled or partially filled with a heated material. After the at least partially filled container is sealed, one or more gases may be released from an adsorber material and into the interior volume of the sealed container. As the contents of the container cool, the release of gas(es) from the adsorber material relieves vacuum that would otherwise develop.

Oxygen-scavenging compositions comprising an oxidizable metal component, an electrolyte component and a solid, non-electrolytic, acidifying component. When blended with soft, flexible polymeric resins, these compositions exhibit good oxygen-scavenging performance with improved oxidation efficiency relative to compositions containing an oxidizable metal component, an electrolyte, and an acidifying component combined with a more rigid thermoplastic resins. Selection of a thermally stable non-electrolytic, acidifying component is important when melt compounding the compositions into polymeric resins and particularly for extrusion coating applications. The compositions can be used directly as an oxygen absorbent resin melt-fabricated into a wide variety of oxygen-scavenging packaging articles or as concentrates in combination with other thermoplastic resins.

Concentrates produced by melt processing a branching agent and a polyester carrier are disclosed. The concentrates are useful in melt processing polyesters. The concentrates contain sufficiently high concentrations of a branching agent to minimize the formation of crosslinked compounds in the concentrates. Disclosed is a process for obtaining polyester articles, including foamed articles, containing low levels of extractable branching agent. The process comprises: (1) forming a molten mixture comprising (i) a major amount of a first resin composition comprising polyester and from 0 up to about 1 wt. % of a compound capable of branching the polyester, and (ii) a minor amount of a second polyester resin composition comprising at least about 50 wt. % polyester resin and greater than about 2 wt. % of a compound capable of branching the polyester, wherein the relative amounts of (i) and (ii) are such that said molten mixture comprises from about 0.1 wt. % to about 1 wt. % of said branching compound; (2) adding a blowing agent to the molten mixture; and (3) extruding the resultant mixture to obtain a foam. The invention is also directed to the second composition used in the above process, and foamed polyester articles obtained from the process.

Regioselective nitration of diphenyl compounds

Partially soluble, film-forming polyimides and their copolymers made using 3,5-diaminobenzotrifluoride are described. Thin films and coatings of these materials are relatively colorless and the polymers have a high Tg, excellent thermal stability, lower moisture uptake, and lower dielectric constant. They are useful as films, fibers, molded articles and as protective coatings, interlevel dielectrics, electric circuit substrates and the like for the electronics industry.
