Electric component for electric power transmission in an electric system

A method of manufacturing an insulated conductive component having an electrically conductive element is provided. The method includes applying a first layer of a first material comprising a thermally conductive ceramic on a portion of the conductive element, and applying a second layer of a second material comprising a polymeric resin over the first layer. The method includes curing the conductive element to infuse the second material into the first material to define an electrically insulative, thermally conductive coating on the portion of the electrically conductive element.

Method of making an insulated conductive component

Partial discharge detection techniques are provided. In one aspect, a method of detecting partial discharge in an electrical power system having a power electronics converter is provided. A first current signal is captured in response to a first applied voltage. A second current signal is captured in response to a second applied voltage, the second applied voltage being different than the first applied voltage. The first current signal is set as a reference signal. A difference signal is determined based on the second current signal and the reference signal. A determination is made as to whether partial discharge is present based on the difference signal. The method may iterate, and for each iteration, the reference signal is refreshed on a rolling basis as a previously captured current signal measured in response to a previously applied voltage. The applied voltage is also stepped up or down for each iteration.

Noise tolerant electrical discharge detection

A heat pipe assembly includes walls having porous wick linings, an insulating layer coupled with at least one of the walls, and an interior chamber sealed by the walls. The linings hold a liquid phase of a working fluid in the interior chamber. The insulating layer is directly against a conductive component of an electromagnetic power conversion device such that heat from the conductive component vaporizes the working fluid in the porous wick lining of the at least one wall and the working fluid condenses at or within the porous wick lining of at least one other wall to cool the conductive component of the electromagnetic power conversion device. The assembly can be placed in direct contact with the device while the device is operating and/or experiencing time-varying magnetic fields that cause the device to operate.

Conformal heat pipe assemblies

A powered system that has an electric power system with a stator having plural poles with each pole having a conductive winding that may surround the corresponding pole and may be configured to generate a magnetic field, and a rotor that may be configured to rotate in response to the magnetic field generated by the stator. The at least one of the conductive windings may be insulated with an insulation material configured to conduct heat from the at least one conductive winding while operating at a temperature above 600&#xb0; C.

The armature includes an armature winding having a plurality of coils, wherein each coil of the plurality of coils is spaced apart from adjacent coils and comprise includes a first side portion and a second side portion. The armature further includes a first electrically insulating winding enclosure. Furthermore, the armature includes a second electrically insulating winding enclosure disposed at a radial distance from the first electrically insulating winding enclosure, wherein the armature winding is disposed between the first electrically insulating winding enclosure and the second electrically insulating winding enclosure. Moreover, the armature includes an electrically insulating coil side separator disposed between the first side portion and the second side portion of the plurality of coils of the armature winding. A superconducting generator including the armature and a wind turbine having such superconducting generator are also presented.

A power overlay (POL) module includes a semiconductor device having a first side and an opposing second side, a dielectric sheet having a first side coupled to the semiconductor device second side, and an opposing second side, the dielectric sheet defining an aperture therethrough. The POL module also includes a first conductive layer disposed on the second side of the dielectric sheet and electrically coupled through the aperture to the semiconductor device second surface, a first conductive plate having a first side, and an opposing second side coupled to the first surface of the semiconductor device. The POL module further includes a first heat sink coupled the first side of the conductive plate and a first thermal interface layer disposed between the first conductive plate and the first heat sink.

An electric machine includes a rotor assembly having a rotor core that extends in an axial direction and a stator assembly surrounding and coaxial with the rotor assembly. The stator assembly includes a stator core having slots extending in a radial direction into an inner surface of the stator core and extending axially from a first end surface to a second end surface of the stator core. The stator assembly includes stator coil windings disposed within the respective slots of the stator core and a first electrically insulating conformal coating disposed between the stator core and the stator coil windings. The conformal coating includes a polymer matrix impregnated with an effective amount of thermally conductive ceramic materials, above a percolation threshold, that form continuous thermal pathways across a thickness of the first coating.

This present disclosure generally relates to systems and methods of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) techniques for use in insulation systems at least partially encapsulating a semiconductor device, a conductive component and a substrate, such as insulation systems of semiconductor devices, busbars, or the like. Insulation systems formed using EPD processes may be designed to have a dielectric constant that decreases in a direction away from a substrate of the insulation system. This may improve insulation technologies since depositing coatings with sequentially arranged dielectric constants may improve resistance of the insulation system to high temperature, high electric fields, or the like.

Insulation systems and methods of depositing insulation systems

A method of forming a coating on a component of an electrical machine is presented. The method includes coating a surface of the component with a ceramic material, via an electrophoretic process, to form a first coating. The method further includes contacting the first coating deposited by the electrophoretic process with a polymeric material to form a second coating. The method furthermore includes curing or melting the polymeric material in the second coating to form the coating including the ceramic material dispersed in a polymer matrix.

Methods of depositing coatings on electrical machine components

An insulative assembly includes an insulative mica-based carrier film and first and second resistive grading layers joined to opposite sides of the mica-based carrier film. The first resistive material layer is configured to engage one or more conductors and insulate the one or more conductors from at least one other conductor. A method for creating an insulative assembly for one or more conductors includes obtaining an insulative mica-based carrier film, depositing a first resistive grading layer on a first side of the mica-based carrier film, and depositing a second resistive grading layer on an opposite, second first side of the mica-based carrier film.

A stator assembly of an electric machine includes a stator core having a slot extending between a first end and a second end, where the slot includes a first slot exit at the first end and a second slot exit at the second end. Also, the stator assembly includes a plurality of windings, where one of the plurality of windings is disposed in the slot and extends from the first slot exit to the second slot exit, and where the plurality of windings includes at least one conductor and an insulation disposed around the at least one conductor. Further, the stator assembly includes a dielectric plate coupled to one of the first slot exit and the second slot exit and configured to suppress surface discharges on windings present at one of the first slot exit and the second slot exit to which the dielectric plate is coupled.

System and method for suppressing surface discharges on conductive windings of an electric machine

A method of manufacturing an electric machine includes conformally coating a portion of a stator assembly of the electric machine via an electrophoretic process using a coating slurry. The coating slurry includes a polymer precursor loaded with thermally conductive ceramic materials. The method includes curing the polymer precursor of the coated slurry to secure the thermally conductive ceramic materials within a polymer matrix to form a conformal coating on the portion of the stator assembly. The method also includes loading the stator coils into slots of the stator core to form the stator assembly, wherein the conformal coating electrically insolates the stator coils from the stator core of the stator assembly, and wherein an effective amount of thermally conductive ceramic materials, above a percolation threshold, are present in the conformal coating to form continuous thermal pathways across a thickness of the conformal coating.
