A wireless communication network includes numerous mobile terminals and numerous transceivers (&ldquo;base stations&rdquo;). In this wireless communication network, messages sent from the base stations to the mobile terminals are transmitted at a higher data rate than the messages sent from the mobile terminals to the base stations. In one embodiment, a &ldquo;half-duplex&rdquo; protocol assigns separate times slots for base stations and mobile terminal transmissions. In another embodiment, a modified &ldquo;full-duplex&rdquo; protocol provides &ldquo;half-duplex&rdquo; operation in the mobile terminals and &ldquo;full-duplex&rdquo;operation in the base stations.

Asymmetrical data rates and power in wireless digital communication

A wireless personal mobile terminal in a cellular data network includes a packet radio transceiver for communicating with cellular base stations and a paging receiver for receiving paging signals from a paging transmitter serving a large geographical area. The wireless personal mobile message unit has power-saving features built into the signal format. This personal mobile message unit accommodates many communication applications due to the high bandwidth and the low latency achieved in the cellular data network. Low-power operation and wide coverage is achieved using existing one-way paging infrastructure. The wireless personal mobile unit can be achieved inexpensively by modifying a conventional one-way pager.

A network access scheme enhances channel utilization under the ALOHA protocol by making use of the FM capture effect. The resulting network access scheme allows a transmitter to transmit a message simultaneously with other transmitters to a receiver without the need for retransmission when the message reaches the receiver with sufficient strength over the strengths of the other transmissions. In one embodiment, the network access scheme is applied to a wireless data network, which includes support to a two-way paging application. Another network access scheme combines the high channel utilization of the carrier sensing multi-access (CSMA) protocol with the FM capture effect to provide even higher expected channel utilization. The resulting network access scheme uses a channel access protocol ('CSMA/AT') which provides an adaptive threshold. An RF transmitter determines, using the adaptive threshold, whether or not to transmit its message. Under CSMA/AT, if the sensed power of other transmissions (RSSI) in the channel is below the adaptive threshold, the transmitter transmits; otherwise, the transmitter backs off.

Wireless network access scheme

A two-way data network includes a broadcast control sub-network and a cellular data sub-network. The broadcast control sub-network includes a few high-power radio transmitters broadcasting into a large service area. The cellular data sub-network covers the large service area by a number of base stations each servicing a relatively small area. The wireless terminals of the two-way data network monitors the messages in a broadcast control channel at pre-assigned periodic time slots and remain in 'sleep' mode at other times. A packet radio transceiver in the wireless terminal sends data to, and receives data from, the cellularized base stations. The broadcast control sub-network is used to notify the subscriber the receipt of a message. In responding to the notification, the location of the subscriber's wireless terminal is make known, thereby eliminating conventional tasks such as location and mobility management tasks and allowing wireless terminals to be low power. Communication between the cellular base stations and the wireless terminals achieves high data rate, low latency and high capacity.

Two-way wireless data network having a transmitter having a range

A wearable universal user interface device is provided for interacting with a variety of electronic apparatus. The interface device includes various sensors, such as a temperature sensor, pressure sensor, and a two-dimensional quadrant force sensor. The interface device also includes processing circuitry, a wireless transmitter, and an optional receiver. In the preferred embodiment, the interface device is in the form of a ring adapted to be worn on the finger of a user. The device is operated by the wearer's fingers and thumb. Preferably, the interface device includes an internally mounted pressure sensor and an externally mounted two-dimensional force sensor. The body of the ring itself serves as an omnidirectional loop antenna for transmission and reception of signals. Representative applications of the interface device include use as a wireless computer mouse, a remote controller for a television, stereo, VCR, or the like.

A personal communications apparatus using a garment-based audio interface includes a garment member worn on the upper torso of a person, wherein the garment member includes a neck opening which allows extension therethrough of the neck of the person. An audio output device capable of producing hi-fidelity spatialized 3-D sound aiming in selected directions is located adjacent the neck opening of the garment member. A receiver capable of receiving at least one transmitted signal and producing an audio signal based thereupon is coupled to the audio output device. An audio input device capable of capturing spatialized 3-D sound from selected directions is located adjacent the neck opening of the garment member. The audio signal from the audio input device is provided to a transmitter capable of transmitting a signal in dependence upon the audio signal. Embodiments of the garment member include a shirt and a necklace.

Audio interface garment and communication system for use therewith

An audio interface garment includes systems for attenuating the influence of sound waves generated by audio output devices on output signals from a plurality of input devices an. In one embodiment, input signals which are applied to the audio output devices are combined by a mixer to form a mixed audio signal. A plurality of Widrow-Hoff least mean square adaptive filters each form a corresponding filtered signal based upon the mixed audio signal and the output signal from a corresponding one of the input devices. A plurality of processed signals are formed by differencing each filtered signal from the corresponding output signal. The weight values of the adaptive filters are modified according to the least mean square method. The processed signals provide signals in which the first sound waves are attenuated.

Systems for feedback cancellation in an audio interface garment

A method for selecting a symbol using an M-key keyboard in a personal information device (PID) divides the M keys into a first key group and a second key group. Each symbol to be recognized from the input key-strokes on the keyboard is assigned a unique two-keystroke sequence in which the first key and the second key of that two-keystroke sequence are selected from different key groups. When receiving keystrokes from the keyboard, two-keystroke sequences received from the keyboard are matched to the symbol assignments to derive which symbol is selected. This method is applicable not only for selecting letters from a European alphabet, such as the English or the Cyrillic alphabets, this method is applicable to selecting from a phonetic alphabet, such as the Pin-Yin system for Chinese characters and other phonetic systems in the Korean and Japanese languages as well.

Keyboard for personal information device

A method and system for permitting a user to spatially access and playback time-based information having a plurality of segments. Each of the plurality of segments are mapped to a corresponding one of a plurality of mapped spatial coordinates. A user interface determines an input spatial coordinate corresponding to a portion of a user's body within an input coordinate space. A segment of the time-based information corresponding to the input spatial coordinate is accessed and played back using a playback device. A sensory output which corresponds to the segment is produced for sensing by the portion of the user's body. The sensory output aids the user in obtaining a sense of the whole of the time-based information in the input coordinate space.

A personal communications apparatus using a garment-based audio interface. A method and system for accessing time-based information based on spatial coordinate information obtained from a user. Time-based information is mapped into a spatial representation by mapping and transforming the timing of time-based information segments to spatial coordinates. Such spatial coordinates could be either one, two, or three dimensional. With this mapping, segments of time-based information can be associated with different parts of a spatial object, a spatial representation, or different position of a spatial movement. These segments can be accessed by the user by physical inputs in such a fashion that the kinesthetic or touching memory of the user can be relied upon to re-access information and to create a sense of the whole in the information.
