A plurality of aligned or unaligned data packets are received in a data storage device. A data bundle is constructed by concatenating different ones of the plurality of unaligned data packets. Data loss protection identifiers are utilized to track the construction of the data bundle. The data loss protection identifiers are employed to prevent at least one of packet data loss or metadata loss in response to detecting a state reset of the data storage device.

Protecting volatile data of a storage device in response to a state reset

Physical subsector error marking allows for selectively marking subsectors of a physical sector of a storage medium as unreadable. The error marking may include a bad sector mask to indicate that the subsector is unreadable combined with an error signature to confirm that the bad sector mask was set intentionally. The remaining readable subsectors of the physical sector may be returned to the host.
