Water-fat separated magnetic resonance (MR) images with balanced steady-state free precession (SSFP) are produced. The acquired SSFP signals are isolated into multiple echo components in which the phase arrangements between the water and fat signals are controlled by appropriately selecting the TR and TE values of the SSFP imaging sequence. From the isolated echo components, the effects of the field inhomogeneities are corrected and water and fat images are separated.

Water fat separated magnetic resonance imaging method and system using steady-state free-precession

For isotropic diffusion weighting during magnetic resonance imaging, a motion-probing magnetic field gradient pattern is manufactured from a template by searching for an optimum value of a skew parameter (&#x3b5;) of the template. The gradient pattern includes a first pattern before at least one RF refocusing pulse and a second pattern after the refocusing pulse in which the second pattern is symmetrical with the first pattern. For example, gradient coils produce a respective gradient component along each of three orthogonal directions, and for each component and each pattern, the gradient pattern has one cycle of opposite polarity lobes about a crossing point, and for each pattern, the crossing point of the cycle in one of the orthogonal directions is a midpoint of the cycle; and the skew parameter (&#x3b5;) specifies a difference in time between the crossing points of the cycles in the other orthogonal directions.

Methods and apparatus for single-shot magnetic resonance imaging with optimized isotropic diffusion weighting

A method and a system for acquiring diffusion magnetic resonance images with compensation of the effects of eddy currents induced by the diffusion weighting (DW) gradient pulses. Prescan data are first acquired using the same DW sequence to be used for imaging. The prescan data are used to obtain eddy current parameters that model the effects of DW-induced eddy currents under the exact conditions under which DW images are to be acquired. The DW imaging sequence is then slightly modified according to the eddy current parameters and used to acquire DW image data with the effects of DW-induced eddy currents compensated.

Method and apparatus for diffusion magnetic resonance imaging with the effects of eddy currents compensated

A system has been developed for mapping the magnetic field during a balanced steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequence. Field maps are generated by analyzing the magnitude of images acquired using the SSFP imaging sequences with phase increment or frequency shift. The system maps the magnetic field relevant to the imaging sequence and need not rely on phase information. The field maps may be applied to adjust the hardware for correcting the field anomalies contained in the maps. The field maps may also be used for separation of water and fat signals in SSFP imaging.

Magnetic field mapping during SSFP using phase-incremented or frequency-shifted magnitude images

A method is disclosed for determining a gradient-induced cross-term magnetic field in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system comprising: positioning an object in a static magnetic field; applying a radio frequency (RF) saturation pulse that spatially saturates nuclei of a slice of the object and applying an echo planar imaging (EPI) sequence to form an image of a slice of the object; generating a cross-field correction factor by analyzing the spatial distribution of the saturation line in the image.

Measurement and correction of gradient-induced cross-term magnetic fields in an EPI sequence

An improved magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methodology uses an abbreviated initial MRI sequence to generate sequence diagnostic parameters. The sequence diagnostic parameters have a fixed relationship to certain sequence-conditioning parameters, and are used for calculating characteristic values of the sequence-conditioning parameters. The read out gradient pulse sequence is modified in accordance with the calculated characteristic values of the sequence-conditioning parameters. The modified read out gradient pulse sequence is then incorporated into a subsequent MRI pulse sequence used for obtaining a diagnostic image. The methodology has particular application in so called ultra fast MRI process which include echo-planar imaging (EPI) and echo-volume imaging (EVI).

Sequence preconditioning for ultra-fast magnetic resonance imaging

A method is disclosed for determining a gradient-induced cross-term magnetic field in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system involving the steps of: positioning an object in a static magnetic field; applying a radio frequency (RF) excitation pulse that spatially selects a slice of the object; applying an incremented phase-encoding magnetic gradient field along a phase encoding gradient field direction parallel to the slice phase; applying a selective RF refocusing pulse to select a line in the slice; applying a switched readout magnetic gradient; which causes a cross-term magnetic field, generating a data array of a phase-encoding gradient and a corresponding sample data point along the selected line, and determining a center frequency distribution (CF) for the selected line, where the CFR is indicative of a gradient-induced cross-term magnetic field.

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method is disclosed for generating and identifying water and fat separated MR images. Image data is first acquired to obtain two echo images with the water and fat signals orthogonal in the first echo image, and parallel/anti-parallel in the second echo image. The effect of background field inhomogeneties are removed, and water and fat images are separated from each other. The separated water and fat images are identified according to the difference of their precessing frequencies.

Separation and identification of water and fat MR images at mid-field strength with reduced T2/T2* weighting

A post data-acquisition magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method is disclosed for generating water/fat separated MR images wherein the resultant contrast in water-only or fat-only images is made adjustable under operator control. Image data is first obtained using a single-scan three-point Dixon MRI scan sequence having a specific nuclear magnetic response (NMR) signal echo time, TE. The timing of read-out gradient pulses during the MRI imaging scan sequence is selected according to the chemical-shift difference between water and fat signals so that the water and fat NMR signals evolve between them an angle of &pgr; radians during an inter-echo time &Dgr;TE. Water/fat separated images of variable contrast are then produced by reprocessing the acquired image data using different operator selected values for the contrast echo time (newTE) when correcting for relaxation.

Post data-acquisition method for generating water/fat separated MR images having adjustable relaxation contrast

A method and apparatus is disclosed for measuring and compensating the effects of eddy currents induced during NMR imaging operations. A cubic or cylindrical sample is placed in the imaging volume of a MRI system at a position centrally located with respect to the main magnetic field and oriented with its longitudinal axis parallel to a desired measuring direction. A magnetic field gradient pulse is applied for inducing eddy currents as well as for generating a slice-selective spin-echo signal. The spin-echo signal is acquired immediately after the termination of each eddy-current inducing gradient pulse. Two slices are selected along the desired measurement direction at symmetrical equal distance from the center of the main magnetic field. Two spin-echo signals are acquired for each slice with the polarity of the eddy-current inducing gradient pulse reversed between the two echo signals. Quantitative values for eddy-current induced field gradients and B oscillations are determined based on the precessing frequencies of the acquired NMR signals. NMR imaging is improved by compensating for eddy currents effects by applying the quantified values of the field gradients and B oscillations to set an appropriate pre-emphasis network. Gradient pulses in MRI/MRS pulse sequences may also be selectively pre-distorted or modified to compensate for resulting gradient-switching induced eddy currents. Other aspects of the disclosed method include measuring the time course of gradient switching, altering the pulse sequences to measure eddy currents having long time constants, repeatedly measuring the eddy currents to assist in pre-emphasis adjustments, and measuring EC-induced field gradients and B oscillation in the presence of moderately large background field inhomogeneities.

Method and system for measuring and compensating for eddy currents induced during NMR imaging operations

A method and apparatus for producing water-dominant and fat-dominant MR signal data for use in constructing separate images from single-scan single-point Dixon MRI sequences is disclosed. The effects of field inhomogeneities are removed by quantitating the signal phase by taking the argument of the MR signal multiplied by itself. A region-growing algorithm guided by a polynomial model is used to unwrap the phase which is then used to separately generate water-pixel data and fat-pixel data for producing separate images. The invention can be used for constructing images from both 2-D and 3-D spin-echo and/or field-echo acquisitions.

Method and apparatus for providing separate water-dominant and fat-dominant images from single scan single point dixon MRI sequences

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method and apparatus is disclosed for quantitating water and fat content of tissues using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) image data of the tissues and for producing an images indicative of the fat and water fractions of the total water and fat content of the tissues. To reduce the overall scanning time, a quadruple field-echo imaging scan sequence is used to acquire the image data. Each imaging sequence comprises an initial slice-selective RF excitation pulse followed by four magnetic field read-out gradient pulses and the acquisition of four separate field-echoes. Each field-echo is generated through the controlled timing and polarity of an applied read gradient. The period of time between field-echoes (T) is selected according to the chemical-shift difference between water and fat signals so that the two signals develop between them an angular phase difference of .pi. radians (180.degree.) during the inter-echo time. Resulting field-echo signals acquired from two scans, one scan preferably having a sequence repetition period (TR) twice that of the other, are analyzed to determine the tissue fat and water fractions for each pixel and produce corresponding fraction images.

Quantitative MR imaging of water and fat using a quadruple-echo sequence

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods are invented which allow for quantification of sequence-induced B.sub.0 oscillation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The techniques can be used to study any system malfunction which induces sequence-synchronized phase oscillation of the MR signals. When the oscillation is spatially uniform, methods are also developed to correct the acquired NMR data for minimizing the effects of the oscillation.

NMR methods for qualification of sequence-induced B.sub.0 oscillation

A method and apparatus for obtaining three MRI image data in a single data acquisition TR interval for use in constructing separate water and fat images by appropriate processing of the three images data is disclosed. Methods and apparatus for correcting image artefacts caused by variations in the main magnetic field of an MRI system are disclosed, particularly for MRI with steady-state spin precession. For field correction in MRI with steady-state spin precession, the effects of the field changes can be corrected by quantifying the time course of the field drifts by repeated acquisition of the zero k-space lines. The change in the phase between consecutive zero k-space lines is used as an indicator of field variation and for correction of associated image artifacts. By using for field correction the zero k-space lines acquired using the imaging sequence itself, the steady-states of spin precession are undisturbed throughout the MRI data acquisition.
