A method, apparatus and system for improving the tolerance for timing jitter noise by eliminating the need to recover clock information from the input signal. There is no need to communicate clock synchronization information between transmit and receive gateways. In addition, the new receiving scheme can work in burst mode in its true sense, i.e., recovering data bits from the first incoming bit after an arbitrary period of time without transmitting.

An interband self-mode-locked (SML) semiconductor laser utilizes an active waveguide structure that includes an active waveguide section and one or more passive waveguide sections that together enhances self-mode-locking. The SML laser operation is based on enhanced Kerr lens mode-locking by vertically optically combining the active section with one or more passive waveguide sections.

A lossless optical coupler includes at least one input waveguide, at least two output waveguides and an intermediate optical splitter. The optical splitter of the present invention further comprises an active section adapted to provide contemporaneous splitting and amplification of an input optical signal. The arrangement of the present invention provides an inexpensive and compact integrateable coupling device.

Monolithically integrated optical coupler with substantially no splitting loss

An InP on-chip polarization splitter is proposed base on an arrayed waveguide grating that is composed of waveguides having birefringence. The present invention also performs channel filtering and demultiplexing that is useful in WDM/DWDM applications. The required waveguide structure is formed using active-passive monolithic integration platforms, providing the integration of the polarization splitter with active devices as well as passive devices.

A high power multi-frequency laser includes a laser cavity defined by reflective elements, a frequency routing device in the cavity comprising a plurality of frequency selective pathways, a first set of optical amplifiers optically coupled to a first end of the frequency routing device, and a second set of optical amplifiers optically coupling a second end of the frequency routing device and a first one of the reflective elements. The high power multi-frequency laser further includes a power combiner. The power combiner is optically coupled to the first set of optical amplifiers and a second one of the reflective elements and combines the outputs of the first set of optical amplifiers such that a common output for the multi-frequency laser is provided. The common output of the present invention provides a single output from the multi-frequency laser having a high output coupling efficiency.

A technique for performance-monitoring of a standard SONET signal involves first converting the optical signal to an electrical signal, removing in the framing signal time slot the framing signal for leaving only the framing signal noise in such time slot, and separating the framing signal noise from the data signal for viewing as a measure of the quality of the SONET signal.
