In one embodiment, a nanobeam cavity device includes an elongated waveguide having a central optical cavity, first and second lateral substrates that are positioned on opposed lateral sides of the waveguide, and carrier-injection beams that extend from the first and second lateral substrates to the central optical cavity of the elongated waveguide.

Nanobeam cavities having carrier-injection beams

Aspects of enhanced nanoscale gas chromatography are described. In one embodiment, a nano-scale gas chromatography (GC) module includes a light source, a light detector, and a sensor module having vertically-integrated photonic crystal slab (PCS) Fano resonance filter and GC channel layers. The PCS Fano resonance filter layer includes a hole lattice region, and the GC channel layer comprises a gas channel for separation of analytes in a gas mixture. The gas channel includes a coiled section and an extended length section, where the extended length section extends through a region in the GC channel layer that is stacked in proximity with the hole lattice region. The hole lattice region in the PCS Fano resonance filter layer provides local field enhancement of light generated by the light source for increased light-matter interaction with the analytes in the gas channel.

Enhanced nanoscale gas chromatography

Vertical cavity light emitting sources that utilize patterned membranes as reflectors are provided. The vertical cavity light emitting sources have a stacked structure that includes an active region disposed between an upper reflector and a lower reflector. The active region, upper reflector and lower reflector can be fabricated from single or multi-layered thin films of solid states materials ('membranes') that can be separately processed and then stacked to form a vertical cavity light emitting source.

Hybrid vertical cavity light emitting sources

A magnetic field-guided method of metal-assisted chemical etching comprises immersing a structure that comprises a two-dimensional magnetic pattern layer on a surface thereof in an etchant solution. The magnetic pattern layer sinks into the structure as portions of the structure directly under the magnetic pattern layer are etched. A programmable magnetic field H(t) is applied to the structure during etching to guide the sinking of the magnetic pattern layer, thereby controlling the etching of the structure in three dimensions.

Apparatus and method for magnetic-field guided metal-assisted chemical etching

Photonic crystal structures having a plurality of air columns and coating such structures to provide structures with improved performance are described herein. The coating includes a material that coats an uppermost portion of a photonic crystal structure, wherein the photonic crystal structure comprises a plurality of air columns and wherein the plurality of air columns are coated on their uppermost surface by the coating material.
