The present invention provides systems and methods for securing communications in a wireless network by utilizing the inherent randomness of propagation errors to enable legitimate users to dynamically create a shared symmetric secret key. In one embodiment, the invention provides a system with two computers each having a wireless network adapter. The sending node encodes the frames, transmits the frames, determines if the frames were correctly received, retransmits the frames if they were not correctly received, stores the frames that were not retransmitted, and uses the stored frames to generate a secret key. The receiving node receives the encoded frames, determines if the frames were retransmitted, stores at least one of the frames that was not retransmitted, and uses the stored frames to generate the same secret key as the receiving node.

Wireless network security using randomness

An apparatus for optimizing a filter based on detected attacks on a data network includes an estimation means and an optimization means. The estimation means operates when a detector detects an attack and the detector transmits an inaccurate attack severity. The estimation means determines an accurate attack severity. The optimization means adjusts a parameter and the parameter is an input to a filter.

Adaptive defense against various network attacks

An improved medium access protocol is divided into two tasks: collision avoidance and contention resolution. The purpose of the collision avoidance is to avoid occasional collisions due to the synchronization of channel access among different stations. The purpose of contention resolution is to control the overall sending rate of competing stations when the shared channel is operating at or near its capacity limits, such that excessive collisions can be avoided. Contention resolution methods in accordance with the present invention include a graceful rate control mechanism.
