A composition containing a carbon monofluoride admixture is provided. The carbon monofluoride admixture is generally in the form of layer having opposing upper and lower surfaces. Usually, an ion conducting or a solid electrolyte layer is position on one of the upper or lower layers of the monofluoride admixture. In some configurations, the ion conducting or a solid electrolyte layer can be alkaline metal aluminum oxide or alkaline metal aluminum fluoride. The alkaline metal is commonly lithium, and the alkaline metal aluminum oxide or alkaline metal aluminum fluoride is more commonly MAlX(M is one of alkali metals, X=O, F), Z commonly can have a value from about 0.5 to about 10 and y can have a value from about 1.75 to about 6.5, more commonly z can have a value from about 1 to about 5 and y can have a value from about 2 to about 4. The carbon monofluoride admixture can include a polymeric binder and one or more of a conductive carbon black and conductive graphite. The carbon monofluoride admixture is generally a component one or more electrodes of an electrochemical energy storage device.

Extreme long life, high energy density batteries and method of making and using the same

A high energy/power density, long cycle life and safe lithium ion cell capable of long-term deep discharge/storage near zero-volt is described. The cell utilizes a near zero-volt storage capable anode, such as a spinel LiTiO, coupled to a high voltage, high-energy and/or high-power density cathode, such as LiNiMnO. The near zero-volt storage cell is rechargeable and affords safety advantages for battery transportation, storage, and handling, and significant cost reductions for cell maintenance. The cells produce high-energy and/or high-power densities and long cycle life. The cell anode, cathode, and separator active materials are coated with one or more protection or stability enhancing and/or conductivity enhancing materials to enhance electrochemical performance and to strengthen stabilities for long-term cycle life and storage life.

High energy/power density, long cycle life, safe lithium-ion battery capable of long-term deep discharge/storage near zero volt and method of making and using the same

A hybrid electrochemical energy storage device having the attributes of a high power supercapacitor and a lithium ion battery are described. The hybrid electrochemical energy storage device can be a pseudocapacitor with a cathode having a coated activated carbon powder having a coated activated carbon cathode. The coated activated carbon can provide for enhanced energy density and ion conductivity. The activated carbon powder is coated with metal oxides, metal nitrides, metal sulfides, metal phosphates, polymers, and ion conducting or solid electrolytes, and a mixture thereof. More specifically, the activated carbon powder can include two or more active materials, with one of the two or more active materials being carbonaceous particles that comprise from about 50 to about 100 wt % of the composition, and the other of the two or more active materials atomic deposition layers on the carbonaceous particles. The atomic deposited layers can be metal oxides, metal nitrides, metal sulfides, metal phosphates, polymers, and ion conducting or solid electrolytes, and a mixture thereof.

High energy density hybrid pseudocapacitors and method of making and using the same

A process is provided for synthesizing a lithium, nickel, manganese and oxygen composition, LiNiMnO, where w is from about 0.8 to about 1.2, x is from about 0.3 to about 0.8, y is from about 1.3 to about 1.8, and z is from about 3.8 to about 4.2. The composition has a lattice parameter 'a' value and wt % crystalline spinel value within the bounds defined by the following lattice parameter 'a' and wt % crystalline spinel coordinate values of about (8.1690 &#x212b;, 98.5%), about (8.1765 &#x212b;, 98.5%), about (8.1810 &#x212b;, 96.2%), about (8.1810 &#x212b;, 93.4%), about (8.1771 &#x212b;, 93.4%), and about (8.1690 &#x212b;, 97.6%).

The present invention related to an electrochemical cell comprising an anode of a Group IA metal and a cathode of a composite material prepared from a combination of vanadium oxide and either a copper or a silver oxide and the other of a copper or a silver nitrate. The cathode material of the present invention provides an increased gravimetric energy density over the cathode active materials of the prior art along with an increased pulse voltage delivery capacity. This makes the cathode material of the present invention particularly useful for implantable medical applications.

This disclosure relates generally to cathode materials for electrochemical energy cells, more particularly to metal/air electrochemical energy cell cathode materials containing silver vanadium oxide and methods of making and using the same. The metal/air electrochemical energy cell can be a lithium/air electrochemical energy cell. Metalized, three-dimensional structured oxygen cathode materials for lithium/air batteries and method for making and using the same

A single step, in situ curing method for making gel polymer lithium ion rechargeable cells and batteries is described. This method used a precursor solution consisting of monomers with multiple functionalities such as multiple acryloyl functionalities, a free-radical generating activator, nonaqueous solvents such as ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, and a lithium salt such as LiPF. The electrodes are prepared by slurry-coating a carbonaceous material such as graphite onto an anode current collector and a lithium transition metal oxide such as LiCoOonto a cathode current collector, respectively. The electrodes, together with a highly porous separator, are then soaked with the polymer electrolyte precursor solution and sealed in a cell package under vacuum. The whole cell package is heated to in situ cure the polymer electrolyte precursor. The resulting lithium ion rechargeable cells with gelled polymer electrolyte demonstrate excellent electrochemical properties such as high efficiency in material utilization, high Coulombic efficiency, good rate capability, and good cyclability.
