Sand consolidation for a subterranean formation can be achieved by adding a curable resin to a drilling fluid. The curable resin can be a furan- or epoxy- or silane-based resin. The drilling fluid can form a filtercake on a wellbore wall. A filtercake-removal fluid can provide a dual function to remove the filtercake and cure the curable resin, which consolidates formation particles. A curing agent can also be included in the filtercake-removal fluid. Sand consolidation can also be achieved by adding the curable resin to the filtercake-removal fluid. The resin can penetrate into the formation as the filtercake is being removed and then cure.

A crosslinked polymer comprising reactants of a first repeating unit, a second repeating unit, and a crosslinker that react to form the crosslinked polymer, wherein the first repeating unit is a sulfonic acid-containing monomer present from 1% to 45% by weight of the reactants, wherein the second repeating unit is selected from the group consisting of an N-vinyl amide-containing monomer, a terminal double bond-containing monomer, and any combination thereof, and is present from 55% to 99% by weight of the reactants, and wherein the crosslinker comprises at least two olefinic bonds.

A crosslinked polymer comprising reactants of a first repeating unit, a second repeating unit, and a crosslinker that react to form the crosslinked polymer, wherein the first repeating unit is a sulfonic acid-containing monomer present from 50% to 99% by weight of the reactants, wherein the second repeating unit is selected from the group consisting of an N-vinyl amide-containing monomer, a terminal double bond-containing monomer, and any combination thereof, and is present from 1% to 50% by weight of the reactants, and wherein the crosslinker comprises at least two olefinic bonds, and is present in the range of about 9% to about 25% by weight of the reactants.

Crosslinked polymer compositions for use in subterranean formation operations

The present disclosure provides treatment fluids that comprise star macromolecules as a fluid loss additive or a viscosifier. An embodiment of the present disclosure is a method comprising: providing a treatment fluid that comprises: an aqueous base fluid; and a star macromolecule that comprises: a hydrophilic polymeric core, a first group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the first group consists of hydrophilic monomers, and a second group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the second group comprises at least one hydrophilic homopolymeric segment and at least one hydrophobic homopolymeric segment; and introducing the treatment fluid into a wellbore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation. Another embodiment of the present disclosure is a method comprising: providing a treatment fluid that comprises: a non-aqueous base fluid; and a star macromolecule that comprises: a polymeric core, a first group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the first group consists of hydrophobic monomers, and a second group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the second group comprises at least one hydrophobic homopolymeric segment and at least one hydrophilic homopolymeric segment; and introducing the treatment fluid into a wellbore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation.

Star macromolecules for wellbore applications

The present disclosure provides treatment fluids that comprise star macromolecules as a fluid loss additive or a viscosifier. An embodiment of the present disclosure is a method comprising: providing a treatment fluid that comprises: an aqueous base fluid; and a star macromolecule that comprises: a hydraulic polymeric core, a first group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the first group consists of hydrophilic monomers, and a second group of polymeric arms attached to the core wherein each of the arms in the second group comprises at least one hydrophilic homopolymeric segment and at least one hydrophobic homopolymeric segment; and introducing the treatment fluid into a wellbore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation.

Various embodiments disclosed relate to crosslinked polymers including sulfonic acid groups or salts or esters thereof as viscosifiers and fluid loss additives for subterranean treatment. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of treating a subterranean formation. The method includes placing in a subterranean formation a composition including a crosslinked viscosifier polymer including an ethylene repeating unit including an &#x2014;S(O)ORgroup wherein at each occurrence Ris independently chosen from &#x2014;H, substituted or unsubstituted (C-C)hydrocarbyl, and a counterion.

Crosslinked polymers including sulfonic acid groups or salts or esters thereof as viscosifiers and fluid loss additives for subterranean treatment

A polymer microsphere for use as a fluid loss additive in drilling muds including a hydrophobic core of hydrophobic monomers and a hydrophilic shell of hydrophilic monomers wherein the hydrophilic shell surrounds the hydrophobic core. The polymer microsphere is capable of forming micelles or microgels in water without using surfactants and can be block, graft, and random copolymers. The hydrophilic shell is physically or chemically linked to the hydrophobic core. The polymer microsphere further includes crosslinkers, preferably where the crosslinkers are monomers containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups.

Methods of use for crosslinked polymer compositions in subterranean formation operations

Crosslinked polymer additives that may be used as thinners and/or deflocculants in subterranean treatment fluids are provided. In one embodiment, the methods comprise: providing a treatment fluid comprising an aqueous base fluid, a viscosifying agent, and a crosslinked synthetic polymer that comprises a copolymer of at least a first monomer comprising 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid or any salt thereof, and a second monomer comprising an N-vinyl amide, and at least one crosslinking agent, wherein the average molecular weight of the crosslinked synthetic polymer is less than about 3,000,000 grams per mole; and introducing the treatment fluid into at least a portion of a well bore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation.

Synthetic crosslinked polymer additive for use in subterranean treatment fluids

Various embodiments disclosed relate to compositions including a viscosifier polymer and a polyamine viscosity modifier and methods of using the same for treatment of subterranean formations. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of treating a subterranean formation. Crosslinked sulfonate-containing polymers may be stable in high density, monovalent brines, which may render such polymers particularly useful in drilling fluids in general and, especially, in the subclass of drilling fluids known as drill-in fluids. For example, a drilling fluid may include a crosslinked sulfonate-containing polymer dispersed in a monovalent brine having a density of about 8 lb/gal to about 20 lb/gal, wherein the crosslinked sulfonate-containing polymer comprises: reactants of a first repeating unit and a crosslinker that react to form the crosslinked sulfonate-containing polymer, wherein the first repeating unit is a sulfonic acid-containing monomer present from 50% to 99.99% by weight of the reactants, and wherein the crosslinker comprises at least two olefinic bonds.
