A recording head comprises a write pole extending to an air-bearing surface. A near-field transducer is positioned proximate a first side of the write pole in a down-track direction. A heatsink structure is proximate the near-field transducer and positioned between the near-field transducer and the write pole. The heatsink structure extends beyond the near-field transducer in a cross-track direction and extends in a direction normal to the air-bearing surface.

A recording head has a near-field transducer that extends a first distance away from a media-facing surface. Two subwavelength focusing mirrors are at an end of a waveguide proximate the media-facing surface and extend a second distance away from the media-facing surface that is less than the first distance. The subwavelength mirrors are on opposite crosstrack sides of the near-field transducer and separated from each other by a crosstrack gap. The subwavelength focusing mirrors each include a first material at the media-facing surface and a plasmonic material that covers an edge of the subwavelength focusing mirror that faces the near-field transducer. The first material is more mechanically robust than the plasmonic material.

A recording head includes a near-field transducer proximate a media-facing surface of the recording head and a waveguide that overlaps and delivers light to the near-field transducer. The recording head includes subwavelength-sized focusing mirror comprising first and second reflectors disposed on cross track sides of the near-field transducer. Each of the first and second reflectors is spaced apart from the media-facing surface by a distance, D, measured along an axis normal to the media-facing surface.

A near-field transducer has an enlarged portion with a layer of soft plasmonic material. A peg formed of a thermally robust plasmonic material includes an embedded part that is partially embedded within the enlarged portion and has an exposed surface facing away from the enlarged portion. An intersection between a lower edge of the enlarged portion and the embedded part has a discontinuity.

A recording head comprises a waveguide extending to an air-bearing surface, and the waveguide comprises a core surrounded by cladding layers. A near-field transducer is disposed on a first side of the core, and a reflector, comprising a layer of metallic material, is disposed on a second side of the core facing away from the first side. The reflector extends beyond the core in a cross-track direction and extends in a direction normal to the air-bearing surface. The reflector has a thickness in a downtrack direction of less than 200 nm.

An apparatus comprises a write pole, a waveguide core, and a near-field transducer (NFT) positioned between the write pole and the waveguide core. The NFT comprises a heatsink portion, an enlarged portion, and a peg comprising a refractory metal and extending from the enlarged portion toward a media-facing surface. A first surface of the peg is substantially coplanar with a first surface of the enlarged portion and the first surface of the enlarged portion shares an interface with the heatsink portion. A first dielectric layer is positioned between the peg and the write pole, and a first adhesion layer is positioned between the peg and the first dielectric layer. In addition, a second dielectric layer is disposed on an entire surface of the NFT opposing the media-facing surface, and a second adhesion layer is positioned between the NFT and the second dielectric layer.

An apparatus comprises a write pole, a waveguide core, and a near-field transducer (NFT) positioned between the write pole and the waveguide core. The NFT comprises an enlarged portion and a peg comprising a refractory metal and extending from the enlarged portion toward a media-facing surface. A first dielectric layer is positioned between the peg and the write pole, and a first adhesion layer is positioned between the peg and the first dielectric layer. In addition, a second dielectric layer is disposed on an entire surface of the NFT opposing the media-facing surface, and a second adhesion layer is positioned between the NFT and the second dielectric layer.

A near field transducer has a bottom disc with a first surface facing a write pole of a recording head. The bottom disc is recessed from a media-facing surface of the recording head by a distance R. An anchor layer is stacked on the first surface of the bottom disc and has an enlarged part with a peripheral shape corresponding to that of the bottom disc. The anchor layer further has a peg that extends from an end of the enlarged part towards the media facing surface, the end of the enlarged part recessed from the media facing surface by the distance R. A middle disc is on a second surface of the anchor layer. The middle disc is recessed from the media-facing surface a distance MDSCR that is greater than the distance R. A heat sink is stacked on a third surface of the middle disc. The heat sink is recessed from the media-facing surface by at least a distance TPH that is greater than the distance MDSCR.

A near-field transducer is situated at or proximate an air bearing surface of the apparatus and configured to facilitate heat-assisted magnetic recording on a medium. The near-field transducer includes an enlarged region comprising plasmonic material and having a first end proximate the air bearing surface. The near-field transducer also includes a disk region adjacent the enlarged region and having a first end proximate the air bearing surface. The disk region comprises plasmonic material. A peg region extends from the first end of the disk region and terminates at or proximate the air bearing surface. The near-field transducer further includes a region recessed with respect to the peg region. The recessed region is located between the peg region and the first end of the enlarged region.

A near-field transducer has an enlarged portion with a layer of soft plasmonic material. A peg is embedded in a lower part of the enlarged portion that faces a media-facing surface. The peg has an elongated outer part that extends from a lower edge of the enlarged portion towards the media-facing surface and an embedded part that is embedded within the enlarged portion. The embedded part could be any shape. The peg is formed of a thermally robust plasmonic material.
