A spectrum of tier-splitting mechanisms facilitates distributed programming. A rich application model and associated tools enable programmers to write rich distributed applications that can run anywhere. A program can be developed simply as a single tier or tier agnostic application. Subsequently or concurrently, the program can be sliced into multiple tiers in different ways to reflect, for instance, capabilities and/or constraints of a server, client and/or network.

Tier splitting support for distributed execution environments

Modular content framework and document format methods and systems are described. The described framework and format define a set of building blocks for composing, packaging, distributing, and rendering document-centered content. These building blocks define a platform-independent framework for document formats that enable software and hardware systems to generate, exchange, and display documents reliably and consistently. The framework and format have been designed in a flexible and extensible fashion. In addition to this general framework and format, a particular format, known as the reach package format, is defined using the general framework. The reach package format is a format for storing paginated documents. The contents of a reach package can be displayed or printed with full fidelity among devices and applications in a wide range of environments and across a wide range of scenarios.

Dynamic dispatch for classes and interfaces is encapsulated in a class-less scripting language. A plurality of mechanisms is employed to facilitate dynamic polymorphism. One or more target-language constructs, such as dictionary objects, prototype objects and/or derived types, are utilized to capture class and interface-method implementations. These constructs are subsequently referenced at runtime to invoke appropriate code.

Systems and methods facilitate data augmentation in a computer environment. Data collections of various forms are altered out of band with at least one augmentor specifying alterations thereto. The alterations are applied to an associated collection of data such as programmatic code. In this manner, data can be modified, extended and/or removed from the collection to enable specialization and/or personalization, among other things.

Methods and systems for defining documents with selectable and/or sequenceable parts

An implementation of a technology, described herein, for enhancing the reading experience of electronically stored documents on electronic display devices. Unlike the conventional virtual paging paradigms, this technology intelligently examines the content of a fixed electronic document at (or near) a boundary of virtual pages. It determines whether that content includes lines of text. If it does, then it moves the virtual page boundary to white space between lines rather than splitting a line of text or displaying overlap. This action intelligently avoids splitting a line of text. Alternatively, if it cannot determine whether that content includes lines of text, then it produces an overlap, but it softly lowlights the overlap. This indicates that the reader need not read the content of the overlap because it either will be repeated or was repeated. This abstract itself is not intended to limit the scope of this patent. The scope of the present invention is pointed out in the appending claims.

Methods and systems for building packages that contain pre-paginated documents

A method and system are provided for detecting transparency simulation formulated by an application in a rendering device. The system includes a node structure construction component for saving each drawing function in a node with an associated node type and node state. The system further includes a node structure constructed from the saved nodes and traversal components for traversing the node structure. The traversal components include a type check mechanism for determining a saved type of each node in the structure and a state check mechanism for finding a saved state. The system detects the transparency simulation upon finding a predetermined node type and a predetermined node state.

System and method for detecting and converting a transparency simulation effect

A system and process for generating and using mixed raster content files is described. MRC files may be created directly from an application, rather than being processed from a composite image, to separate a single image into background, foreground, and selection masks for each page. Also, an improved MRC structure is described in which only relevant portions are contained in background, foreground, and selection layers for each page.
