Apparatus and methods for a market-based control framework to coordinate a group of autonomous thermostatically controlled loads (TCL) to achieve system-level objectives with pricing incentives is disclosed. In one example of the disclosed technology, a method of providing power to a load via a power grid by submitting bids to a coordinator includes determining an energy response relating price data for one or more energy prices to quantity data for power to be consumed by the load, sending a bid for power for a finite time period based on the energy response to the coordinator, and receiving a clearing price based on: the bid, on bids received from a plurality of additional loads, and a feeder power constraint. In some examples, the energy response is based at least in part on an equivalent thermal parameter model and a control policy indicating one or more power states for the load.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads

Welding methods and welded joints for improving corrosion resistance of the joint between a plurality of high-strength aluminum alloy structural members are described herein. An example method can include applying a first weld at a junction between the plurality of high-strength aluminum alloy structural members using a first filler metal, and applying a second weld on at least a portion of a toe of the first weld using a second filler metal. The second weld can be applied using a fusion welding process (e.g., an arc welding process or a high energy beam welding process). Additionally, the secondary weld can alter a secondary phase of the first weld.

Welding methods and welded joints for joining high-strength aluminum alloys

Systems and methods for calculating efficiency of a rotary friction welding process are described herein. An example method can include measuring kinetic energy transferred from a welding machine to an interface of a welded joint, and calculating an efficiency of a rotary friction welding process based on the measured kinetic energy. For example, a workpiece torque experienced by a sample can be measured, and an energy associated with the workpiece torque can be calculated. The efficiency of the rotary friction welding process can then be calculated using the energy associated with the workpiece torque.

Systems and methods for determining efficiency of friction welding processes

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for coordination of a population of Thermostatically Controlled Loads (TCLs) with unknown parameters to achieve group objectives including bidding and market clearing strategies designed to motivate self-interested users to realize efficient energy allocation subject to a peak power constraint. In one examples of the disclosed technology, a method of operating a load includes estimating a set of values for unmeasured parameters of the load's thermal environment based on output measurements of the thermal environment, determining an energy response based on the estimated set of values for the unmeasured parameters, and transmitting a bid for power for a finite time period based on the determined energy response to the coordinator. A clearing price is received from the coordinator responsive to the transmitted bid and power is sent to the load responsive to the received clearing price.

Coordination of thermostatically controlled loads with unknown parameters

An apparatus and system is described for storing high-pressure fluids such as hydrogen. An inner tank and pre-stressed concrete pressure vessel share the structural and/or pressure load on the inner tank. The system and apparatus provide a high performance and low cost container while mitigating hydrogen embrittlement of the metal tank. System is useful for distributing hydrogen to a power grid or to a vehicle refueling station.
