A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry ('DXA') system includes an x-ray source assembly comprising a source carriage to move the x-ray source assembly along a scan path, the scan path comprising an active scan portion and a reference measurement portion. A detector assembly including a detector carriage to move the detector assembly with the source assembly and to collect scan data at active scan portions. A support structure supporting the source and detector assemblies. A calibration controller coupled a calibration element having a known x-ray attenuation value and configured position the calibration element between the source and detector assemblies during the reference measurement portion and to remove the calibration element from between the source and detector assemblies during the active scan portion. A processing unit operable to compare the reference measurement against an expected reference value to identify a variance and to selectively trigger an action in response to the variance.

System and method for continuous calibration of X-ray scans

Systems and methods for determining body composition by combining dual-energy x-ray (DXA) technology with three-dimensional (3D) optical technology and/or bioimpedance technology. A multi-modality scanning system may include a dual-energy x-ray source and an x-ray detector mounted to opposing sides a c-arm and configured to scan a patient on a optically translucent table. The system may also include one or more 3D optical imaging devices to capture 3D optical images of the patient substantially concurrently with the emission of the dual energy x-rays. A bioimpedance machine may also be included in the multi-modality scanning system. Data based on the dual-energy x-rays may be combined with the data from the 3D optical images and/or the bioimpedance data to generate values of at least three compartments selected from: bone, fat tissue, lean tissue, dehydrated lean tissue, and water.

Multiple modality body composition analysis

Silicon particles for active materials and electro-chemical cells are provided. The active materials comprising silicon particles described herein can be utilized as an electrode material for a battery. In certain embodiments, the composite material includes greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight silicon particles, the silicon particles having an average particle size between about 10 nm and about 40 &#x3bc;m, wherein the silicon particles have surface coatings comprising silicon carbide or a mixture of carbon and silicon carbide, and greater than 0% and less than about 90% by weight of one or more types of carbon phases, wherein at least one of the one or more types of carbon phases is a substantially continuous phase.

Surface modification of silicon particles for electrochemical storage

Various embodiments provide glass bottle-based silicon electrode materials. A battery electrode includes silicon made from magnesiothermic reduction of silicon oxide derived from glass bottles and a conformal carbon coating thereon. A method of making the electrode material includes crushing glass bottles to produce crushed glass containing silicon oxide particles, mixing the silicon oxide particles with a heat scavenger to produce a mixture, magnesiothermically reducing the mixture to produce silicon, and applying a carbon coat to the silicon to produce an electrode material.

A metal oxide anchored graphene and carbon nanotube hybrid foam can be formed via a two-step process. The method can include forming at least one graphene layer and a plurality of carbon nanotubes onto a surface of a porous metal substrate by chemical vapor deposition to form a coated porous metal substrate, and depositing a plurality of metal oxide nanostructures onto a surface of the coated porous metal substrate to form the metal oxide anchored graphene and carbon nanotube hybrid foam.

According to an example embodiment of the invention, a method is provided for predicting the effects of drug targets on treating a disease. The method can include constructing a structure of a Bayesian network based at least in part on knowledge of drug inhibiting effects on a disease; associating a set of parameters with the constructed Bayesian network; determining values of a joint probability distribution of the Bayesian network via an automatic procedure; deriving a mean Bayesian network with one or more averaged parameters based at least in part on the joint probability values; and calculating a quantitative prediction based at least in part on the mean Bayesian network.

Systems and methods for identifying drug targets using biological networks

A peptide microarray comprising a plurality of predicted unique binding peptides being selected by computational prediction of interaction with a protein of interest or a domain thereof. The selected unique binding peptides are pre-synthesized and then printed and/or immobilized onto a solid support surface via N-terminus with a linker. Methods of using the invention peptide microarray for quantitative determination of protein-peptide interaction, epitope mapping, and drug screening are also provided.
