Systems, devices, and techniques for performing wavelength division multiplexing or demultiplexing using one or more metamaterials in an optical communications systems are described. An optical device may be configured to shift one or more phase profiles of an optical signal using one or more stages of metamaterials to multiplex or demultiplex wavelengths of optical signals. The optical device may be an example of a stacked design with two or more stages of metamaterials stacked on top of one another. The optical device may be an example of a folded design that reflects optical signals between different stages of metamaterials.

Wavelength multiplexer/demultiplexer using metamaterials for optical fiber communications

Polarization-insensitive metasurfaces using anisotropic nanostructures are disclosed. These anisotropic structures allow for an accurate implementation of phase, group delay, and group delay dispersion, while simultaneously making it possible to realize a polarizationinsensitive, diffraction-limited and achromatic metalens for wavelength, e.g., λ=from about 460 nm to about 700 nm. The approach of polarization-insensitivity can be also applied for other metasurface devices with applications in, e.g., imaging and virtual or augmented reality.

Broadband achromatic polarization-insensitive metalens with anisotropic nanostructures

An optical system, comprising: (i) multiple input optical fibers; (ii) an optical mode multiplexer/demultiplexer coupled to said input optical fibers with, said optical mode multiplexer/demultiplexer comprising a plurality of metamaterial structures having length and forming at least one stage of metamaterials, the at least one stage of metamaterials is being situated on a surface of the optical mode multiplexer/demultiplexer facing the input optical fibers, and the at least one stage of metamaterials is oriented at angles between 60 and 120 degrees relative to the axis of the input fibers; and the metasurfaces are structured to receive a first optical signal having a first mode from at least one of said multiple input optical fibers and convert the first mode to a different mode.

Mode multiplexer/demultiplexer using metamaterials for optical communication system, and optical communication

An optical device for aberration correction (e.g., chromatic aberration correction) is disclosed. The optical device includes an optical component (e.g., a spherical lens) and a metasurface optically coupled to the optical component. The metasurface includes a plurality of nanostructures that define a phase profile. The phase profile corrects an aberration (e.g., chromatic aberration) caused by the optical component. The resulting optical device becomes diffraction-limited (e.g., for the visible spectrum) with the metasurface.

Aberration correctors based on dispersion-engineered metasurfaces

An optical device comprises a first meta-lens and a second meta-lens. The first meta-lens includes a first plurality of nanostructures that define a first phase profile of the first meta-lens. The second meta-lens includes a second plurality of nanostructures that define a second phase profile of the second meta-lens. A combination of the first meta-lens having the first phase profile and the second meta-lens having the second phase profile is configured to achieve a diffraction-limited focusing and correct an aberration of light transmitted through the optical device.

The optical imaging apparatus includes a metasurface lens including a substrate and a plurality of nano-structures patterned on a first side of the substrate. The optical imaging apparatus further includes imaging optics disposed in a spaced apart relationship with a second side of the substrate. The second side is opposite the first side on which the nano-structures are patterned. A surface of the imaging optics and the second side of the substrate define a space for accommodating an immersion fluid. The metasurface lens is configured to direct light incident on the plurality of nano-structures towards the imaging optics through the space accommodating the immersion fluid.

Immersion meta-lens at visible wavelengths for diffraction-limited imaging

An optical device includes: (1) a substrate; and (2) multiple meta-lenses disposed on the substrate, each meta-lens of the meta-lenses including multiple nanofins disposed on a respective region of the substrate, the nanofins together specifying a phase profile of the meta-lens.

Ultra-compact, aberration corrected, visible chiral spectrometer with meta-lenses

A meta-lens having a phase profile includes a substrate and a plurality of nanostructures disposed on the substrate. Each individual nanostructure of the nanostructures imparts a light phase shift that varies depending on a location of the individual nanostructure on the substrate. The light phase shifts of the nanostructures define the phase profile of the meta-lens. The varying light phase shifts can be realized by, e.g., changing orientations of nanofins or changing diameters of nanopillars.
