A method and apparatus that provides a digital approximation of an input analog continuous-time signal using piece-wise linear waveform from key sampling points selected by a dynamic predictive sampling method. The apparatus includes a processing system or block to generate a dynamic prediction of the input signal as well as an upper threshold and a lower threshold to form a tracking window, a comparator that compares the input signal with the upper threshold and the lower threshold to determine if the prediction is successful, a counter to record timestamps between the unsuccessful predictions which are the selected key sampling points, and a processing block controlling predictions and sampling states of the system. The processing of the sampling points can include a neighbor amplitude filter and a slope filter.

Dynamic predictive sampling and processing

Low-complexity asynchronous wireless sensing and communication architecture is disclosed for low power wireless sensors. Schemes are based on asynchronous digital communications and Ultra-Wideband impulse radios. In asynchronous radio, combination of frequency-shift-keying (FSK) and on-off-keying (OOK) to remove clock synchronization is applied. Improved asynchronous non-coherent transmitters and receivers achieve both low power and low complexity while seamlessly combined with asynchronous level-crossing modulation. Both uncoded and coded asynchronous communication may be utilized. Coded asynchronous communication may use error correction. Forward error correction schemes for asynchronous sensor communication are utilized where dominant errors consist of pulse deletions and insertions, and where instantaneous encoding takes place. Forward error correction is also accomplished where a continuous-time sparse waveform signal is asynchronously sampled and communicated over a noisy channel via Q-ary frequency-shift keying. Concatenated code employs outer systematic convolutional codes and inner embedded marker codes that preserve timing information and protect against symbol insertions and deletions.

Asynchronous wireless sensing

Methods and apparatuses embodied in delta sigma domain digital signal processing circuits that perform linear operation of delta sigma modulated bit stream, including adding, coefficient multiplication, and compressing. The digital processing circuits perform on-the-fly processing to generate a continuous output delta sigma bit-stream based on the continuous input delta-sigma modulated bit-streams and the input binary coefficients. The on-the-fly bit-stream processing circuit is realized via digital delta sigma modulators with input coefficient multiplexers, feedback multiplexers, and toggling multiplexers.
