Head-mounted display assemblies may include a first eyecup and a second eyecup that are configured for respectively positioning a first lens and a second lens in front of intended locations of a user's eyes when the head-mounted display assembly is donned. The first eyecup and the second eyecup may be movable relative to each other to adjust for an interpupillary distance of the user's eyes. A single near-eye display screen may be configured for displaying an image to the user through the first and second eyecups. An enclosure over the single near-eye display screen may include a first transparent component positioned between the first lens and the single near-eye display screen and a second transparent component positioned between the second lens and the single near-eye display screen. Various other methods, devices, systems, and assemblies are also disclosed.

Head-mounted display assemblies for interpupillary distance adjustments

One embodiment of the present application sets forth an apparatus that includes a composite display layer that transmits a set of composite light. The composite display layer includes a display layer that provides a first subset of light included in the set of composite light, and a first mirror layer parallel to the first display layer that provides a second subset of light included in the set of composite light, where the second subset of light comprises a reflection of a first portion of the first subset of light. The composite display layer also includes a polarizer layer disposed on the composite display layer, where the polarizer layer provides the first portion of the first subset of light to the first mirror layer.

Head-mounted display assemblies and related methods for interpupillary distance adjustments

A head mounted display (HMD) includes an electronic display, an optical element, and a light sensor. The electronic display is configured to generate a pixel pattern of display light and the optical element is disposed to pass the display light to a user of the HMD. The light sensor is disposed proximate to the optical element to generate light measurements in response to the pixel pattern. The light measurements are representative of a lateral position of the optical element with respect to the electronic display.

Automatic position determination of head mounted display optics

A virtual scene may be projected onto a two-dimensional screen of a head mounted display. The two-dimension screen may be substantially perpendicular to a visual axis of a user wearing the head mounted display. A lens assembly of the projector may be adjusted to focus on a viewing portion of the virtual scene on the screen.

A method of automatic image alignment with head mounted display (HMD) optics includes generating a pixel pattern of display light on an electronic display of the HMD. A light sensor of the HMD then generates light measurements in response to the pixel pattern, where the light measurements are representative of a lateral position of an optical element of the HMD. The method also includes adjusting a rendering center of the electronic display for presentation of one or more images with respect to the optical element based on the light measurements.

Automatic image alignment with head mounted display optics

A near-eye optical element includes a refractive layer and at least one infrared reflecting layer. The refractive layer has an eyeward side and a scene side. The eyeward side of the refractive layer is disposed opposite of the scene side of the refractive layer. The infrared reflecting layer is embedded in the refractive layer and configured to receive an infrared beam from an infrared illuminator and direct the infrared beam out the eyeward side of the refractive layer to illuminate an eyebox area with infrared light. The infrared reflecting layers are configured to reflect the infrared beam and pass visible light.

A head mounted display (HMD) includes first display pixels, second display pixels, and third display pixels. The second display pixels are disposed between the first display pixels and the third display pixels. The first display pixels and the second display pixels are within a first field of view (FOV) of a first eye of a user of the HMD and the second display pixels and the third display pixels are within a second FOV of a second eye of the user. A selectable optical element is driven to a first state and a second state to make the second display light from the second display pixels visible to the first eye during a first time period and visible to the second eye during a second time period to expand the FOV for the user.

A method of fabricating an optical assembly includes positioning an optical structure between a first portion of a mold tool and a second portion of the mold tool and providing a transparent liquid optical material into a first cavity of the mold tool and into the second cavity of the mold tool while the optical structure is positioned between the first portion of the mold tool and the second portion of the mold tool. The first cavity is defined by the first portion of the mold tool and the second cavity is defined by the second portion of the mold tool. The liquid optical material is cured to form the optical assembly.

A head mounted projection display includes a polarizing beam splitter stack that includes a waveplate. The polarizing beam splitter stack reduces optical losses and has a low forward extension. The polarizing beam splitter may be used at a 45 degree angle or at a non 45 degree angle relative to the line of view. A correction may be also be performed to the intensity of individual pixels to account for chromatic non-uniformity in the optical response of a retroreflector and other optical components.
