Systems and methods are described herein that improve grid performance by smoothing demand using thermal reserves. The smoothed demand can reduce peak loads as well as the ramp rate of demand that will otherwise require the use of inefficient, expensive generation sources. These improvements are tied to the selective switching on or off electrical loads that are coupled to thermal reserves, effectively using the thermal reserves as an energy storage mechanism. Historical data of past usage can be used to create load model and ensure that effects on customer comfort are minimized while still accomplishing the beneficial effects for the overall grid, which enables grid owners to both reduce their operational cost by avoiding expensive generation and improve system reliability by achieving more predictable power demand.

Demand response of loads having thermal reserves

A voltage regulation device includes: an input node configured to receive electrical power from an electrical power source; a primary winding electrically connected to the input node; an output node configured to provide electrical power to a load; a shunt winding electrically connected to the output node; a converter configured to provide a compensation current to the shunt winding; and a control system configured to: determine a harmonic compensation signal based on harmonic frequency data; determine a reactive power compensation signal based on a reactive power set point; and control the converter based on the determined harmonic compensation signal and the determined reactive power compensation signal to produce the output compensation signal. The output compensation signal is configured to reduce the one or more harmonic frequency components in a current that flows in the output node and to control an amount of reactive power at the output node.

Voltage regulation device that includes a converter for harmonic current compensation and reactive power management

A voltage regulation system for an electrical power distribution network that receives electricity from one or more distributed energy resources includes: a voltage regulation device configured to maintain a voltage in the electrical power distribution network to within a voltage bandwidth, the voltage bandwidth including a range of voltages; and a control system coupled to the voltage regulation device, the control system configured to: analyze voltage data, the voltage data including a plurality of voltage samples, each of the voltage samples representing the voltage in the electrical power distribution network at a time within a period of time; determine an adjusted voltage bandwidth for the voltage regulation device based on the analysis; and change the voltage bandwidth of the voltage regulation device to the adjusted voltage bandwidth.
