Adaptive network security policies can be selected by assigning a number of risk values to security intelligence associated with network traffic, and identifying a number of security policies to implement based on the risk values.

Adaptive network security policies

One embodiment of the presently-disclosed invention relates to an intrusion prevention system that includes a plurality of FPGA instances and a plurality of compute instances in a cloud network. The plurality of FPGA instances perform pre-processing that determines whether data packets received from the network gateway are associated with suspicious flows. The data packets associated with the suspicious flows are communicated from the plurality of FPGA instances to a plurality of compute instances in the cloud network. The plurality of compute instances perform post-processing that determines whether a suspicious flow is malicious. Other embodiments, aspects and features are also disclosed.

Examples relate to extracting data from network communications. In one example, a programmable hardware processor may: receive a first set of network packets; store each network packet included in the first set in a first storage device; identify, from each network packet included in a subset of the first set of network packets, data included in the network packet, the data meeting at least one condition defined by first programmable logic of the programmable hardware processor; and for each network packet included in the subset: extract, from the network packet, data of interest; and store, in a second storage device, i) the extracted data of interest, and ii) an identifier associated with the network packet.

Extracting data from network communications

An example of a computing system is described herein. The computing system includes a plurality of network security devices. The computing system also includes a network switch configured to direct network traffic. The computing system further includes a controller coupled to the network switch. The controller is to instruct the network switch in directing network traffic to the plurality of network security devices.

Examples of implementations relate to metadata extraction. For example, a system of privacy preservation comprises a physical processor that executes machine-readable instructions that cause the system to normalize a network traffic payload with a hardware-based normalization engine controlled by a microcode program; parse the normalized network traffic payload, as the network traffic payload passes through a network, by performing a parsing operation of a portion of the normalized network traffic payload with a hardware-based function engine of a plurality of parallel-distributed hardware-based function engines controlled by the microcode program; and provide the hardware-based function engine with a different portion of the normalized network traffic payload responsive to an indication, communicated through a common status interface, that the different portion of the normalized network traffic payload is needed to complete the parsing operation.

Metadata extraction

Examples relate to organizing and storing network communications. In one example, a programmable hardware processor may: receive a first set of network packets; identify, for each network packet included in the first set, a network flow, each network flow including at least one related packet; store each network packet included in a subset of the first set in a first data storage device; for each network packet included in the subset, organize the network packet according to the network flow identified for the network packet; identify, from the network flows, a set of network flows that each have at least one characteristic of interest; and store, in a second data storage device, each network packet included in each network flow of the set of network flows.

Organizing and storing network communications

Network flow classification can include clustering a network flow database into a number of at least one of applications and network flows. Network flow classification can include classifying the number of the at least one of applications and network flows.

Example embodiments disclosed herein relate to implementing pre-filter rules at a network infrastructure device. In one example, the network infrastructure device receives a packet flow including a first pre-filter tag including information from implementation of a first subset of a set of pre-filter rules. In the example, the network infrastructure device includes logic to implement a second subset of the pre-filter rules. The second subset of pre-filter rules are different from the first subset of pre-filter rules. The second subset of pre-filter rules are implemented on the packet flow to yield a pre-filter result.

A method and system for dynamic identification of network security policies are provided. The method comprises inspecting network traffic using a number of network inspection technologies; executing a first network security system to implement a first number of security policies to respond to a first number of threats identified by the number of network inspection technologies; executing a second network security system to implement a second number of security policies to respond to a second number of threats identified by the number of network inspection technologies; obtaining security intelligence from the first and second network security system; and adaptively reassessing the first and second number of security policies based on the security intelligence.

According to an example, security and access control may include receiving traffic that is related to an application tier of a plurality of application tiers, and that is to be routed to another application tier or within the application tier. The attributes of the traffic related to the application tier may be analyzed, and based on the analysis, an application related to the traffic and a type of the traffic may be determined. The type of the traffic may be compared to a policy related to the application to determine whether the traffic is valid traffic or invalid traffic. Based on a determination that the traffic is valid traffic, the valid traffic may be forwarded to an intended destination. Further, based on a determination that the traffic is invalid traffic, the invalid traffic may be forwarded to a predetermined destination or blocked.

Security and access control

Example embodiments disclosed herein relate to a network security system. The network security system intercepts inline DNS requests. It is determined whether a domain name associated with one of the inline DNS requests corresponds with one or more domain names. A security action is performed based on the determination.

Techniques for identifying stream fingerprints are provided. A stream of data packets may be received. In one aspect, a stream fingerprint may be determined based on the stream of data packets. An application associated with the stream may be determined based on the stream fingerprint. In another aspect, a stream may be partially matched while a fully matched stream fingerprint has not been determined. As additional packets are received, the stream may become fully matched.

Provided are a method and system for tracking access to application data and preventing data exploitation by malicious programs. In one example, the method includes shimming into a running process of the system to create at least one monitoring hook to monitor a program, building an execution path of the monitored program, and monitoring a behavior of the execution path for malicious behavior using the monitoring hook.
