A luminaire includes multiple light emitting cells. Each light emitting cell has a light source, and a focus-tunable lens (e.g., a liquid lens) associated with the light source. Each respective one of the light emitting cells is independently controllable relative to the one or more other light emitting cells. In a typical implementation, the control of each light emitting cell may involve, for example, controlling a surface of liquid in the corresponding liquid lens.

Luminaire with independently-controllable focus-tunable lenses

An electrically powered light source including a light emitting diode (LED) having variable chromaticity, which is adapted for use in a dental operatory. A dental operatory lamp includes a thermally conductive housing having a front directed toward the operating area and a rear away from the operating area; a generally elliptical reflector located on the rear of the thermally conductive housing; at least one heat pipe; a plurality of color LEDs projecting light toward the elliptical reflector, the plurality of LEDs being in thermal contact with the at least one heat pipe; and an optical light guide for combining light from said LEDs. Another embodiment of the lamp includes at least two user selectable light spectra, one of said spectra providing white light with color temperature in the range 4000&#xb0; K-6000&#xb0; K and one spectra having reduced output in the wavelength range 400-500 nm.

LED-based dental exam lamp with variable chromaticity

A light mixing and folding lamp includes an LED assembly with two or more LED chips that direct light into the ingress end of a light mixing rod. The light mixing rod is positioned to pass through an aperture in a concave second reflecting element, and mixed light emerges from the egress end of the light mixing rod, where it is directed toward a first reflecting element positioned near a focal point of the second reflecting element. The first reflecting element reflects mixed light emerging from the egress end of the light mixing rod, folding the mixed light back toward a concave reflecting surface of the second reflecting element. The second reflecting element reflects light from the first reflecting element forward, where the light emerges from the lamp directed toward a subject to be illuminated.

Color temperature tunable LED-based lamp module

A light guide for interfacing between a light source having a light emitting surface with a first shape and a light receiver with a light receiving surface of a second shape. The light guide has a light emitting end having a first shape of substantially the same size as the first shape of the light emitting surface. A light receiving end has a second shape of substantially the same size as the second shape of the light receiving surface. A free form body between the light emitting end and the light receiving end causes a transition between the first and second shape.

Light guide for coupling differently shaped light source and receiver

An optical element for a side emitting light that emits light from a light source at side directions relative to the horizon is disclosed. The optical element has an internal recess adapted to fit over a light source. The internal recess includes a collimating surface and interior refractive surfaces. An exterior refractive surface corresponding to the interior refractive surfaces is provided. A faceted prismatic reflecting surface corresponding with the collimating surface is provided. Light at a substantially horizontal angle relative to the horizon is emitted through the interior refractive surface through the exterior reflective surface to a side direction and light at a substantially vertical angle relative to the horizon is collimated by the collimating surface and reflected by the reflecting surface in the side direction.

A device comprising a plurality of LEDs arranged in a coplanar array, the coplanar array comprising an LED at the center and LEDs positioned radially symmetrically around the LED at the center, and wherein the central axes of the LEDs are arranged to be parallel to each other; a one-piece lens array collimating light from the LEDs, the lens array comprising a plurality of coplanar lens tiles, the coplanar lens tiles comprising a lens tile at the center and lens tiles positioned radially symmetrically around the lens tile at the center, and wherein the central axis of each of the lens tiles is aligned with the central axis of a corresponding LED; and a focusing lens converging the collimated light from the lens array into a single image in a focal plane, wherein the central axis of the focusing lens is aligned with the central axis of the lens array.
