In at least one embodiment, a well inspection method and system is disclosed. The method includes transmitting an acoustic signal from a well inspection tool into a casing structure, receiving return signals from the casing structure to the well inspection tool, performing, using at least one processor associated with the well inspection tool, a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) on a plurality of frequencies of the return signals to generate spectrogram data, determining entropy spectra from the spectrogram data, and determining casing loadings associated with the casing structure based at least in part on the entropy spectra.

Self-calibrated method of determining borehole fluid acoustic properties

Methods, systems, devices, and products for hydrocarbon tubular evaluation. Methods comprise conveying the logging tool in the tubular with a carrier; inducing with a transmitter a horizontal shear (SH) wave; identifying higher order SH mode signals received at a plurality of offset receivers responsive to a higher order SH mode engendered by the horizontal shear (SH) wave; estimating a dominant frequency for higher order SH mode from the higher order SH mode signals; estimating a group velocity for the higher order SH mode from the higher order SH mode signals; and estimating a tubular parameter using the dominant frequency and the group velocity. The tubular parameter may be at least tubular thickness. The method includes estimating the tubular parameter independent of the fundamental horizontal shear wave mode (SH0).

Casing wall thickness detection from higher order shear-horizontal mode signals

A method is provided of inspecting a nested multi-layer structure including a first and second electrically conductive layer and a third layer disposed behind the second conductive layer. The method includes deploying a sensor device including an electromagnetic acoustic transducer to a borehole location proximate to the structure, generating a drive signal including a plurality of frequencies, applying an electrical current signal to the sensor device based on the drive signal and inducing currents in the first conductive layer that induce currents generating acoustic signals having the plurality of frequencies, detecting a first set of resonant frequencies based on received electromagnetic signals, detecting a second set of resonant frequencies based on received acoustic signals, estimating a property of the first and/or the second conductive layer based on the first set of resonant frequencies, and estimating a property of the third layer based on the second set of resonant frequencies.

Estimation of formation and/or downhole component properties using electromagnetic acoustic sensing

Methods and apparatus for performing formation evaluation in a borehole intersecting an earth formation. Methods may include exciting at a first borehole depth at least one critical refraction wave by steering an acoustic beam transmitted by at least one ultrasonic transmitter to an interface in the formation to intercept the interface at a critical angle; receiving an acoustic signal comprising critical refraction wave data at a logging tool in the borehole; and obtaining a wave property measurement from the critical refraction wave data. The interface may be the borehole wall in an open-hole well or behind casing. Methods include using ultrasonic transmitter(s) to generate the plurality of acoustic beams, identifying critical refraction wave data within the response signal corresponding to the at least one critical refraction wave, and obtaining the wave property measurement from the critical refraction wave data.

Methods, systems, devices, and products for well logging using a logging tool in a borehole in an earth formation. Methods include conveying the logging tool in the borehole on a carrier; taking acoustic well logging measurements with the logging tool including generating a multitone acoustic beam from at least one transmitter on the tool, the beam comprising a high frequency signal modulated by a low frequency envelope, the high frequency signal including a first subsignal at a first frequency and a second subsignal at a second frequency, and generating measurement information at at least one acoustic receiver on the logging tool in response to a plurality of acoustic reflections of the acoustic beam from at least one volume of interest in the formation; and estimating a property of the volume of interest using the measurement information.

Collocated multitone acoustic beam and electromagnetic flux leakage evaluation downhole

Systems, devices, and methods for evaluating a volume of interest of an earth formation. Methods include estimating a parameter of interest of a volume of the formation using a value of a signal property (frequency amplitude) for a second harmonic mode signal component of a detected acoustic signal from the volume. Methods may include activating a transmitter to propagate an acoustic wave through the volume; producing the detected acoustic signal at a receiver responsive to the acoustic wave; and identifying the fundamental mode signal and the second harmonic mode signal associated with the detected acoustic signal. Methods include estimating an acoustic wave non-linearity parameter (&#x3b2;) for the volume using a relationship between the value of the signal property of the second harmonic mode signal component and a value of the signal property for a fundamental mode signal component of the detected acoustic signal.

Non-linear acoustic formation evaluation

Systems, devices, and methods for evaluating an earth formation intersected by a borehole using signals produced at a plurality of borehole depths by an ultrasonic transducer in the borehole, the signals produced by the transducer including ringdown signals from the ultrasonic transducer and echo signals from a wall of the borehole from a plurality of azimuthal orientations. Methods include using peak amplitude values and arrival time values from the signals to construct a background modulation template corresponding to at least one depth; estimating, for each respective depth of the plurality of borehole depths, an azimuthally varying interference pattern predominantly resulting from a ringdown signal for each respective depth by mapping the modulation template to arrival time values corresponding to the respective depth; and subtracting, for each respective depth, the estimated varying interference pattern from the peak amplitude values corresponding to the respective depth to generate adjusted peak amplitudes.

A system is provided including an acoustic interface device, configured for coupling to a transducer and to a specimen, the acoustic interface device comprising a material composition having a shear wave attenuation coefficient &#x3b1;of at least about 5 dB/cm when subjected to an acoustic signal at a frequency between about 200 to 500 kHz. The acoustic interface device may be formed of polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon&#xae;), a perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA), polycarbonate (Lexan&#xae;), or polyether ether ketone (PEEK). Methods of using the acoustic interface device with a transducer for ultrasonic measurement of a specimen are also disclosed.

An acoustic transducer assembly includes: a carrier configured to be disposed in an earth formation, the carrier having a carrier axis; an array of transducer elements forming at least a semicircular shape, the array configured to emit acoustic signals in a radial direction relative to the carrier axis; and a circuit coupled to the array and configured to actuate a subset of the transducer elements and emit an acoustic beam therefrom, the circuit configured to actuate the subsets as a phased array to electronically rotate the acoustic beam about the carrier axis.

Devices and methods for downhole acoustic imaging

A system, apparatus and method for determining an acoustic property of a fluid in a wellbore is disclosed. A faceplate is placed in the wellbore with a stepped surface of the faceplate in contact with the fluid. The stepped surface includes a non-stepped face and a stepped face. A first portion of an acoustic pulse passes from the faceplate into the fluid via the non-stepped face and a second portion of the acoustic pulse passes from the faceplate into the fluid via the stepped face. A first reflected acoustic pulse related to the first portion of the acoustic pulse is received. A second reflected acoustic pulse related to the second portion of the acoustic pulse is received. A measurement of the first reflected acoustic pulse and a measurement of the second reflected pulse are used to determine the acoustic property of the fluid in the wellbore.

Acoustic standoff and mud velocity using a stepped transmitter

A downhole measurement tool includes at least one regular receiver and at least one reference receiver externally deployed on a tool body. The reference receiver is configured to be acoustically isolated from the borehole, for example, via an isolation structure including a high-impedance cap and a low-impedance gap. The reference receiver may be deployed in a linear array with the regular receiver(s) and may be substantially identical to the regular receiver(s) such that it has substantially the same sensitivity to tool mode signals and internal drilling noise as do the regular receivers. Received waveforms may be processed so as to remove tool mode arrivals and/or drilling noise.

Reduction of tool mode and drilling noise in acoustic LWD

A downhole tool includes circumferentially spaced and/or angled transducer elements. In one embodiment a standoff sensor has at least three piezoelectric transducer elements, at least a first element of which is configured to both transmit and receive ultrasonic energy. At least second and third of the elements are configured to receive ultrasonic energy transmitted by the first element in pitch catch mode. An electronic controller is configured to calculate a standoff distance from the ultrasonic waveforms received at the first, the second, and the third piezoelectric transducer elements. The controller may further be configured to estimate the eccentricity of a measurement tool in the borehole. Exemplary embodiments of the invention may improve borehole coverage and data quality and reliability in LWD caliper logging. In particular, the invention may advantageously reduce or even eliminate blind spots when logging eccentric bore holes.

Caliper logging using circumferentially spaced and/or angled transducer elements

Aspects of this invention include a downhole tool having first and second radially offset ultrasonic standoff sensors and a controller including instructions to determine at least one of a drilling fluid acoustic velocity and a drilling fluid attenuation coefficient from the reflected waveforms received at the standoff sensors. The drilling fluid acoustic velocity may be determined via processing the time delay between arrivals of a predetermined wellbore reflection component at the first and second sensors. The drilling fluid attenuation coefficient may be determined via processing amplitudes of the predetermined wellbore reflection coefficients. The invention advantageously enables the acoustic velocity and attenuation coefficient of drilling fluid in the borehole annulus to be determined in substantially real-time.
