A power adaptor provides power from a power source to a load device. The power adaptor includes a bulk capacitor and a controller. The controller detects a voltage level of input power from the power source, charges the bulk capacitor, detects a distortion of the voltage level in response to charging the bulk capacitor, and sets an output power limit for the power adaptor from a maximum output power limit for the power adaptor to a reduced output power limit in response to detecting the distortion.

Detecting aircraft in-seat power

An information handling system detects an initial insertion of an alternating current (AC) adapter, and determines an identifier associated with the AC adapter. The system may also determine a parameter for attenuating noise generated by the AC adapter based on the identifier, and attenuate the noise generated by the AC adapter by applying the parameter.

Adaptive noise suppression for touch screen displays

A method and system for supplying power at a voltage selected from a plurality of voltages. Power is initially received at a first voltage. Embodiments communicate with an AC adapter to get device identification and see if the AC adapter supports other voltages. If so, embodiments communicate with the AC adapter to get more information about the adapter and identify what voltages the adapter is capable of providing. If one of the voltages would allow an information handling system to operate more efficiently, embodiments negotiate a power supply contract to operate at a second voltage. When the information handling system powers down, the system resets to operation at the initial voltage.

System and method for selecting a voltage on a barrel adapter interface

A high-performance single barrel power connector for receiving electric power may be capable of receiving more than 330 W up to approximately 600 W of power. The V+ pin and V&#x2212; pin may each be configured with a large plurality of contact points for connecting to a power plug. A connector body retaining the V+ pin and V&#x2212; pin may configured with openings to expose more of the V+ pin and V&#x2212; pin to air and allow the V+ pin and V&#x2212; pin to extend out of the power connector for convective and conductive heat transfer. A shell having a high thermal conductivity may be connected to the V&#x2212; pin and V&#x2212; pin and further connected to a bracket for increased heat transfer away from the V+ and V&#x2212; pins.

A method for increasing power supply voltage in an information handling system in a normal mode with a first peak voltage comprises, in response to receiving a request for a higher peak voltage, an embedded controller (EC) receiving information associated with the application including a request for power at a higher peak voltage, a housekeeping IC communicating a signal to a PWM IC to increase voltage supplied to the information handling system to the higher peak voltage, the PWM IC converting from the PSU to the higher peak voltage and starting a timer with a defined time period. If no additional requests for operating at the higher peak voltage are received before the time period expires, the PWM IC communicates a signal that power will stop being supplied at the higher peak voltage, and the information handling system returns to operating in the normal mode at the first peak voltage.

System and method for increasing power supply peak power capacity

In one embodiment, a method for managing a light source of a power adapter includes: determining that the power adapter is coupled to a power supply; causing the light source to be in a first illuminated state indicating that the power adapter is receiving the power from the power supply; determining that a first instance of a threshold period of inactivity has occurred; causing the light source to be in an unilluminated state; determining that the power adapter is communicably coupled to an information handling system; causing the light source to be in a second illuminated state indicating that the power adapter is providing the power to the information handling system; determining that a second instance of the threshold period of inactivity has occurred; and causing the light source to be in the unilluminated state.

Managing a light source of a power adapter of an information handling system

A power adaptor system may comprise a power source supplying input voltage according to a dynamic power rating to an operably connected host information handling system, a power source identification (PSID) module of the power adaptor receiving an adjustable setting voltage from the power source via a setting voltage port of the PSID module, and a controller of the PSID module executing code instructions to select the dynamic power rating for the power source based on a measurement of the adjustable setting voltage indicating an operating condition of the power adaptor or based on an indication of an operating condition the operably connected host information handling system, wherein the dynamic power rating is one of a plurality of dynamic power ratings in including an adjustable range of power levels at each dynamic power rating at which the power source is capable of operating.

System and method for dynamically identifying a power adaptor power rating based on operating conditions

As an example, a power supply may provide a particular voltage of multiple voltages based on a power profile provided by a universal serial bus Type C (USB-C) integrated circuit (IC) built-in to a USB-C port of a computing device. A power factor correction (PFC) converter may provide an output voltage that varies according to the power profile. The output voltage of the PFC converter may be used as an input to an inductor-inductor-capacitor (LLC) converter. The LLC converter may produce an output voltage that varies in voltage level proportionally to the PFC converter output voltage. The PFC converter may provide a voltage to the LLC converter that causes the LLC converter to provide an amount of voltage indicated in the power profile sent by the USB-C IC of the computing device.

Providing a wide variety of voltages with a power supply that uses an LLC topology

A disclosed method for LED control for a detachable reversable power cable includes detecting, at a power source, that a first connector at a first end of the power cable is connected to the power source, triggering, at the power source, a first pulse on a first wire of the power cable that turns off a first LED switch coupled to a first LED on the first connector, disabling the first LED, and triggering, at the power source, a second pulse on a second wire of the power cable that drives a second LED on a second connector at a second end of the power cable opposite the first end, the second LED being coupled to a second LED switch that is on. The method further includes, responsive to detecting that the second connector is connected to a power sink, modifying a driver path for the second LED.

A power adaptor for an information handling system may provide a higher power output level by monitoring a temperature inside a transformer of the power adaptor. When the transformer temperature is below a threshold below a rated temperature, the power adaptor may be allowed to operate at high power output levels. For example, a power adaptor rated for 45 Watts at 100 degrees Celsius may be allowed to operate at 65 Watts at 70 degrees Celsius. A feedback circuit may use transformer temperature information to determine when a power output level of the power adaptor may be adjusted to a higher level and then reconfigure the power adaptor to operate at the higher power output level.

Reconfigurable power adapter for an information handling system

A rotary extending frame includes a frame, a handle, a plurality of friction pieces, and a plurality of positioning discs. The frame has a plurality of accommodation spaces and fastening portions. The handle is rotatably disposed on the frame and has a holding portion and a plurality of rotating portions connected to two ends of the holding portion and facing two side surfaces of the frame respectively. The friction pieces are disposed on the corresponding rotating portions respectively and are firmly attached on the two side surfaces. The positioning discs are disposed on the corresponding rotating portions respectively and are pivotally connected to the friction pieces. The friction pieces and the frame clamp the corresponding rotating portions, so that the rotating portions and the positioning discs are adapted to rotate relative to the friction pieces and the frame and rub against the corresponding friction pieces simultaneously.

Redundancy in over-voltage fault protection may be provided by controlling switches already present in a power path of a port for an information handling system. An external device coupled to a port may be decoupled from the system when an over-voltage condition is detected at another port of the information handling system. To decouple an external device upon detection of an over-voltage condition, a switch coupled to the port and the external device is turned off. A battery may also be decoupled from a port upon detection of an over-voltage condition at another port.

Over-voltage detection and port protection

An information handling system may have multiple batteries and be powered by any one or combination of those batteries. The multiple batteries may be in different detachable portions of the system. When the portions are attached, a battery in one unit connects through multiple input paths to provide power to the other unit. Under a heavy loading condition, power may be drawn from a first battery while power from a second battery is routed to an external power input of the information handling system to supplement power drawn from the first battery.

Systems and methods for controlling a power adaptor Light-Emitting Diode (LED) indicator are described. In some embodiments, a method may include: detecting a coupling of a power adaptor to a voltage source; setting a plurality of transistors in a first configuration, where the first configuration provides power an LED coupled to the power adaptor via a cable; detecting a de-coupling of the power adaptor from the voltage source; and setting the plurality of transistors in a second configuration, where the second configuration ceases to provide power to the LED.
