A radiopaque liquid to protect normal tissue from radiation induced damage. A radiopaque liquid such as a fluorocarbon is introduced into a body cavity to protect tissues adjacent to a target radiation site. The radiopaque liquid prevents radiation penetration into protected cavities. In one embodiment, perfluorooctylbromide is used as the radiopaque liquid to replace vitreous gel in irradiating an intraocular tumor.

Novel compositions of matter are disclosed having the formula: ##STR1## wherein the carbon rings are fully fluorinated to remove all hydrogens and olefinic character. The compositions have utility as heat transfer agents, hydraulic fluids, vapor phase soldering fluids, gas (O.sub.2, N.sub.2, CO.sub.2, H.sub.2, etc.) transport agents, such as in biological and medical fields, as well as utility as burn-in test fluid.

Novel compositions of matter are disclosed; perfluoro-1,1-di(orthoxylyl) methane, perfluoro-1,1-di(orthoxylyl) ethane and perfluoro-1,1-di(orthoxylyl) propane. The compositions are made by cobalt trifluoride fluorination of 1,1-di(orthoxylyl) methane, 1,1-di(orthoxylyl) ethane and 1,1-di(orthoxylyl) propane. The compositions have utility as vapor phase soldering fluids.
