In a method of treating a sandstone-containing formation penetrated by a wellbore, a treatment fluid comprising an aqueous fluid containing a Bronsted acid, a hydrogen fluoride source and an organic acid or salt thereof that is substantially soluble in the aqueous fluid is formed. The treatment fluid contains less than about 2% of fluoride (F) by weight of the fluid and from 2% or less of sodium (Na) by weight of the fluid. The treatment fluid is introduced into the formation through the wellbore as a single-stage without introducing an acid-containing fluid preflush into the formation prior to introducing the treatment fluid.

Method for single-stage treatment of siliceous subterranean formations

An aqueous oilfield treatment fluid containing a chelating agent and an HF source is described. This fluid is effective at dissolving siliceous materials such as clays and keeping the dissolved materials in solution. In particular it is effective at preventing re-precipitation of initially-dissolved silicon as silica and therefore reduces damage to sandstones with which it is contacted. Methods are given for using this fluid for sandstone matrix stimulation, removal of clay-containing drilling fluid components and filter cakes from wellbores, sandstone acid fracturing, and gravel pack and proppant pack cleaning.

Composition comprising a fully dissolved non-HF fluoride source and method for treating a subterranean formation

A dry solid composition is disclosed that, when added to an aqueous liquid, provides a slurry that can be used in sandstone acid fracturing. The slurry generates hydrofluoric acid downhole to etch the sandstone fracture faces created. The chemical and physical properties of the composition result in very uneven etching of the fracture faces, enhancing the fluid conductivity of the final fracture. Optionally, inert masking materials may be included in the dry composition, or added to the slurry, to increase the inhomogeneity of the etching and further increase the fluid conductivity.

Treating compositions containing mutual solvents suitable for forming and maintaining single-phase aqueous fluid treating compositions containing very high concentrations of acids and/or chelating agents are described. An acid fracturing method is provided in which the acid is generated in the fracture by hydrolysis of a solid acid-precursor selected from one or more than one of lactide, glycolide, polylactic acid, polyglycolic acid, a copolymer of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid, a copolymer of glycolic acid with other hydroxy-, carboxylic acid-, or hydroxycarboxylic acid-containing moieties, and a copolymer of lactic acid with other hydroxy-, carboxylic acid or hydroxycarboxylic acid-containing moieties. The solid acid-precursor may be mixed with a solid acid-reactive material to accelerate the hydrolysis and/or coated to slow the hydrolysis. Water-soluble liquid compounds are also given that accelerate the hydrolysis. The method ensures that the acid contacts fracture faces far from the wellbore.

Generating Acid Downhole in Acid Fracturing

Aqueous liquid compositions for increasing the permeability of a subterranean formation are disclosed, the compositions being characterized by provision of fluoborate anion (fluoboric acid) and a specified compound or compounds, or mixture thereof, which chelate aluminum ions and aluminum fluoride species. Methods of treating a subterranean formation by injection of the composition(s) into the formation are also described.

A method for increasing the permeability of a subterranean formation is disclosed in which an amount of an aqueous mixture, sufficient to increase the permeability of the formation, comprising specified aminopolycarboxylic anionic species, and specified cationic species, is injected into the formation matrix.

The Invention relates to novel fluids and techniques to optimize/enhance the production of hydrocarbon from subterranean formations (e.g., &ldquo;completion fluids&rdquo;), in particular, fluids and techniques are disclosed and claimed which remove wellbore damage and near-wellbore damage in the form of coating formed from drilling and production-related operations (&ldquo;filtercake&rdquo;); the techniques can be applied either by themselves or in conjunction with other completion operations, such as gravel packing; preferred embodiments are chelating agent and enzyme systems in a viscoelastic surfactant (VES) matrix.

Fluids and techniques for hydrocarbon well completion

The present invention is directed to methods for preparing quaternary ammonium salts, particularly pyridinium and quinolinium salts. By preparing these salts in a solvent selected from the group consisting of propylene glycols, propylene glycol ethers and mixtures thereof, the production of undesirable by-products and contamination of the product with undesirable solvents are minimized, if not eliminated. Using the preparation methods of the present invention low hazard corrosion inhibitors and aqueous cleaning solutions using these inhibitors may be prepared. In fact, by preparing dodecyl pyridinium bromide in dipropylene glycol methyl ether as the solvent, a particularly desirable corrosion inhibitor characterized by a low toxicity and a high flash point has been prepared. The present invention thus provides the safer corrosion inhibitors and cleaning solutions long sought by industrial cleaning services.

Low hazard corrosion inhibitors and cleaning solutions using quaternary ammonium salts

An acidic fluid that is useful in stimulation and workover operations, and in particular, for the control of iron in acidizing operations, the removal of alkaline earth carbonate scale in scale removal operations, and matrix or fracture acidizing operations, comprises an acid, such as hydrochloric acid; water; and a hydroxyethylaminocarboxylic acid. Preferred hydroxyethylaminocarboxylic acids are hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA) and hydroxyethyliminodiacetic acid (HEIDA). Also disclosed herein are methods of controlling iron, removing alkaline earth carbonate scale, or matrix or fracture acidizing, involving the use of the acidic fluid.

Well treatment fluids comprising chelating agents

An acidic fluid that is useful in stimulation and workover operations, and in particular, in matrix acidizing treatments, comprises an acid, such as hydrochloric acid; water; an aliphatic aldehyde having 1-10 carbon atoms; and an aromatic aldehyde having 7-20 carbon atoms. The aliphatic aldehyde preferably has 1-6 carbon atoms. Glyoxylic acid and glyoxal are especially preferred aliphatic aldehydes. The aromatic aldehyde preferably has 7-10 carbon atoms. Cinnamaldehyde is especially preferred.
