The present invention provides a system and method for managing in a wireless communication device the receipt of a paging signal from a wide area wireless network. The method includes detecting by the wireless communication device whether the user of the wireless communication device is available for receiving an alert regarding incoming information via the wireless communication device. When the device determines that the user is not available for receiving the alert, one or more intervals during which a paging signal is expected as being possible are ignored by the wireless communication device, such that any paging signal for the wireless communication device that is present during the one or more intervals that are being ignored by the wireless communication device are not received by the wireless communication device.

System and method for managing the monitoring and receipt of a paging signal

An apparatus, such as a user device, can comprise a battery, a plurality of antennas, a transceiver, a charging pad interface, and a controller. The battery can be configured to power the user device. The plurality of antennas can be configured to send and receive signals to and from a wireless node. The transceiver can be configured to communicate, via the plurality of antennas, with the wireless node. The charging pad interface can be configured to detect that the apparatus is coupled to a charging pad and to receive charging power from the charging pad. The controller can be configured to change a configuration of at least one antenna from the plurality of antennas in response to the charging pad interface detecting that the apparatus is coupled to the charging pad.

A full charge capacity, C(t), of the rechargeable battery is determined at time t. An average power consumption profile is determined. A reduced power consumption is implemented based on the average power consumption profile and a factor C(t)/C(O). In other embodiments, functions that are not used in an average power consumption profile are deactivated. Other functions that occur in certain use cases of the average power consumption profile are activated and deactivated as needed.

Apparatus and method for power management to mitigate declining battery capacity

A method and system performs antenna tuning which enhances radio frequency (RF) tuner reliability within a wireless communication device (WCD). The WCD, in response to receiving a request to change an active RF tuning state, retrieves component usage data corresponding to components of a tuning circuit that is tunable to an RF operating channel. The WCD selectively determines, using device environment state data and/or RF state data and the component usage data, an RF tuning state tuned to the RF operating channel. The selected RF tuning state (a) satisfies tuning performance specifications and (b) enhances component reliability performance by minimizing an operational wear on tuning circuit components. The WCD configures the tuning circuit using the selected RF tuning state and tracks session parameter values for tuning circuit components during a corresponding communication session. Following completion of the communication session, the WCD uses the tracked session parameter values to update component usage data.

The method can include establishing a data connection with an alternate network with internet protocol connectivity, where the alternate network is an alternate to cellular networks. Method and apparatus for alert message reception

An apparatus includes an emergency services location module, operatively coupled to location hardware. The emergency services location module is operative to receive a session certificate from an emergency services network entity in response to the apparatus placing an emergency services call or sending an emergency services message. The emergency services location module validates the session certificate to validate that the emergency services network entity is authorized to receive location information, and sends location information obtained from the location hardware to the emergency services network entity, in response to validating the session certificate. The emergency services location module may also be operative to override a user privacy setting that prevents location information from being sent from the apparatus, in response to determining that the session certificate is valid. The emergency services location module may also encrypt the location information prior to sending the location information to the emergency services network entity.

Methods and apparatus for serving content to a wireless device () are disclosed. In an embodiment, a gateway (), or any other suitable device or system, determines that at least one message (e.g., a text or text-like message) containing a first pointer (e.g., a unicast URL) to the content (e.g., a web page) is to be transmitted via an emergency alert system (e.g., CMAS). In response thereto, the gateway () obtains the content using the first pointer and generates a second different pointer (e.g., a multicast/broadcast URL) to the content. The gateway () provides at least a portion of the at least one message and the second pointer for transmission via the emergency alert system (). The gateway () also provides the content for transmission via a wireless multicast/broadcast channel () based on the second pointer.

Methods and apparatus for serving content to a wireless device

A method is described that is for handing over a multi-mode mobile device from a first network technology to a second network technology. The method includes initiating by the multi-mode mobile device a first packet session in a first wireless network and detecting by a multi-mode mobile device a second wireless network supporting a different access network technology. The method also includes determining a Quality of Service requirement and completing pre-registration session establishment procedures for a second session in the second wireless network when the first session includes at least one of a QoS sensitive service and real time service by the first wireless network and mobile device and after completion of the pre-registration session establishment procedures the multi-mode mobile device receives service from the first wireless network and remains dormant on the second wireless network.

The invention relates to a system that enables power to be selectively applied to GPS circuitry in a cellular telephone or other mobile device only when a specific user input is detected. In one embodiment, power to the GPS circuitry may be enabled only when the user strikes the keys '9-1-1.' In other embodiments, other types of GPS enablement or disablement may be employed, such as selectively decoupling the GPS antenna. In another embodiment, the user may depress a privacy bypass button, which alternately enables and disables power to the GPS circuitry. Cellular telephones or other communication devices may therefore activate GPS location service during an emergency call, or when a user wishes to allow their location to be determined, but protect the privacy of that user's location and movement at other times.

Disclosed is a method () for charging energy storage devices. The method () can include a battery charging method in a power supply client connected by a data bus to a power supply host. The method () includes the steps of: detecting () a state of the power supply host; determining () a limit of current from the host to the client; allocating () a portion of the limit to a battery charging current; and charging () a battery of the client at the battery charging current such that the current from the host is greater than a recommended limit and less than or equal to the determined amount. Thus a client device can confidently charge at a rate which causes the port current to exceed a recommended limit, such as a USB port limit of 500 mA, when allowed by conditions of the host device. Advantageously, the method can help to expedite the charging time of a client battery, notwithstanding the number of other clients connected to the same host device for charging, thus minimizing the wait time of a user.

A method for locating a wireless communications device WCD (). The method includes the step of receiving at the WCD () a wireless transmission comprising a first auto-location trigger signal. The WCD (), responsive to the first auto-location trigger signal, operates in an auto-location mode. The auto-location mode includes the automatic collection and communication of predetermined first data, such as audio, video, and GPS location data. After the automatic collection and communication step of the first data is complete, the WCD () enters into a standby mode. The standby mode continues until a state detection device () of the WCD () detects a change in the state of the WCD (). These changes in state are exclusive of the wireless transmission comprising the first auto-location trigger signal. The change(s) in state produce a second auto-location trigger signal, which causes the automatic collection and communication of a second data that is the same or similar to the first data.

Method and apparatus for surreptitiously triggering the collection of data from a lost wireless communications device equipped with audio and/or video collection means

A method and a wireless device () utilize auxiliary information associated with an emergency alert system alert message to direct a user of the wireless device () to safety. A wireless communication system () wirelessly transmits an emergency alert system (EAS) alert message to a wireless device (). The wireless communication system () also wirelessly transmits an augmented EAS alert message to the wireless device (). The augmented EAS alert message includes auxiliary information that provides information to the wireless device () to direct a user of the wireless device () to move at least one of toward a safe zone () and away from a danger zone (). The auxiliary information in the augmented EAS alert message is optionally adjusted based on any combination of: the location of the wireless device, the safe zone, and the danger zone, and the logistics of a vicinity affected by the danger zone.

Using auxiliary information to direct users of wireless devices to safety in response to emergency alert system alerts

A method is described that is for handing over a multi-mode mobile device from a first network technology to a second network technology. The method includes initiating by the multi-mode mobile device a first packet session in a first wireless network in an area of multi-technology wireless coverage and detecting by a multi-mode mobile device a second wireless network supporting a different access network technology than the first wireless network. The method also includes determining a Quality of Service requirement for services supported by the session, and completing initial network entry and session establishment procedures by the multi-mode mobile device for a second session in the second wireless network when the first session includes at least one of a QoS sensitive service and real time service by the first wireless network and mobile device, and not completing initial network entry and session establishment procedures by the multi-mode mobile device when no QoS sensitive service and real time services are supported by the mobile device and first wireless network.
