Methods of reducing sag include combining a cystol ester compound with a non-aqueous fluid and particles to reduce sag in the resulting fluid composition without significantly increasing the viscosity of the fluid composition. The fluid composition CONTAINS the non-aqueous fluid, the particles, and the cystol ester compound. Suitable cystol ester compounds include cystol ester and derivatives of cystol ester having mono-, di-, or tri-substituted aromatic compounds as substituents. The non-aqueous fluid may CONTAINS an invert emulsion, diesel oil, mineral oil, an olefin, an organic ester, a synthetic fluid, or combinations thereof. Further, the fluid composition may be used as a wellbore servicing fluid such as a drilling fluid. The particles may CONTAINS a weighting agent, e.g., barite, galena, hematite, dolomite, calcite, or combinations thereof. The fluid composition may also include organophilic clay.

Methods of reducing sag in non-aqueous fluids

This invention relates to a low toxicity drilling mud oil. In some embodiments, the fluid loss characteristic of the drilling mud oil as used in a borehole can be reduced to less than 0.2 ml/30 minutes by adding about 0.05% to about 2.0% by weight of a butadiene-styrene-butadiene (BSB) block copolymer having about 20% by weight or more styrene.

Reducing fluid loss in a drilling fluid

A composition and a process for using the composition for applications in a subterranean formation are provided. The composition comprises a clay, a polymer, and a liquid. The polymer comprises repeat units derived from a nitrogen-containing olefinic monomer and optionally an olefinic comonomer. The composition can be used as or in drilling fluids, workover fluids, completion fluids, or combinations of any two or more thereof.

Compositions and processes for treating subterranean formations

A process for increasing the viscosity of a zinc compound-containing brine which can be used for workover and completion fluids in oil field operations is provided. The process comprises contacting the zinc compound-containing brine with a polymer which comprises repeating units derived from an unsaturated amide having the formula of CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--R--C(O)--NH.sub.2 and a vinylic sulfur compound selected from the group consisting of CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--R'--SO.sub.3 M, CH.sub.2 .dbd.CH--R'--C(O)--N(H)--R''--SO.sub.2 M, and mixtures thereof; wherein M is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkali metal, and combinations thereof; and R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, and combinations thereof.

Brine viscosification

A novel organophilic clay suspension medium prepared by admixing an organophilic clay with a hydrocarbon oil and an activator selected from the group consisting of phenyl hydroxyalkyl ethers and phenylalkanols. Optionally water may be added to the admixture for further improving the suspension medium.

A drilling fluid additive is disclosed which will prevent water loss into subterranean formations during the drilling of oil and gas wells in hard brine environments. The drilling fluid additive comprises a hydrocarbon, an anionic surfactant, an alcohol, a sulfonated asphalt, a biopolymer, and optionally an organophilic clay, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-co-sodium-2-acryamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate, and water.
