A climate-control system includes a first compressor, a second compressor, a first heat exchanger, a second heat exchanger, and a third heat exchanger. The first compressor includes a first inlet and a first outlet. The second compressor is in fluid communication with the first compressor and includes a second inlet (e.g., a suction inlet), a third inlet (e.g., a vapor-injection inlet), a second compression mechanism, and a second outlet. The second and third inlets are fluidly coupled with the second compression mechanism. The second compression mechanism receives working fluid from the first compressor through the third inlet and discharges working fluid through the second outlet of the second compressor. The first and second compressors are in fluid communication with the first, second, and third heat exchangers.

Climate-control system having vapor-injection compressors

A climate-control system includes a working fluid circuit and a storage tank. The working fluid circuit has a first compressor, a first heat exchanger, a second heat exchanger, a flash tank, and a third heat exchanger. The first heat exchanger receives working fluid discharged from the first compressor. The flash tank is disposed downstream the first heat exchanger and includes an inlet and first and second outlets. The first outlet provides working fluid to the third heat exchanger disposed between the flash tank and the first compressor. The second outlet provides working fluid to the first compressor. The storage tank contains phase-change material that is thermally coupled with the second heat exchanger of the working fluid circuit.

Climate-control system with thermal storage device

A climate-control system includes a first working-fluid circuit, a second working-fluid circuit and a first heat exchanger. The first working-fluid circuit includes a first compressor, a second heat exchanger and a first pump. The second heat exchanger is in fluid communication with the first compressor. The first pump receives a first working fluid from the second heat exchanger and circulates the first working fluid through the first working-fluid circuit. The second working-fluid circuit is fluidly isolated from the first working-fluid circuit and includes a second pump and a fourth heat exchanger. The second pump is in fluid communication with the fourth heat exchanger. The first heat exchanger is thermally coupled with the first working-fluid circuit and the second working-fluid circuit.

A three-phase electric motor of a compressor receives first, second, and third phases from a three-phase power supply. A method for protecting the motor includes, using a line break protector, disconnecting the motor from only the first phase in response to a temperature being greater than a predetermined temperature threshold. The method also includes measuring a first current flowing through the line break protector, and determining a current value based on the first current independent of current in the second and third phases. The method further includes disconnecting the motor from the first, second, and third phases in response to the current value being less than or equal to a predetermined threshold.

Systems and methods for protecting three-phase motors

A system for protecting a three-phase electric motor of a compressor, the motor receiving first, second, and third phases from a three-phase power supply, the system including a single-phase line break protector, a first current sensor, and a control module. The single-phase line break protector disconnects the motor from the first phase in response to a temperature being greater than a predetermined temperature threshold. The first current sensor measures a current through the single-phase line break protector. The control module determines a current value based on the measured current, and disconnects the motor from the second and third phases in response to the current value being less than or equal to a predetermined threshold.

A scroll-type machine is disclosed which is particularly well suited for use as a compressor in refrigeration and air conditioning systems and incorporates a unique arrangement for modulating the capacity thereof. In one group of embodiments the capacity of the scroll-type machine is modulated by relative axial movement between the scroll members so as to form a leakage path across the wrap tips and opposed end plates. In another group of embodiments, modulation is achieved by reducing the orbital radius of one of the scroll members to thereby form a leakage path across the flank surfaces of the wraps. In the second group, a plurality of pin members are moveable from a first and second positions. In a first position the plurality of pin members operably enable the scroll members to orbit and in a second position the pin members restrict the orbiting motion of the first scroll members. Both types of scroll separation may be accomplished in a time pulsed manner to thereby enable a full range of modulation with the duration of the loading and unloading periods being selected to maximize the efficiency of the overall system. A motor control arrangement is also disclosed which may be used with either of the modulation methods mentioned above to increase the efficiency of the motor during periods of reduced load. Additionally, either of the modulation arrangements mentioned above may be combined with a delayed suction form of capacity modulation with or without the motor control feature to thereby achieve better operating efficiency under certain conditions.

Capacity modulated scroll machine having one or more pin members movably disposed for restricting the radius of the orbiting scroll member

Capacity modulated scroll machine

A refrigeration system for multi-temperature and single-temperature applications combines a refrigeration circuit and a single-phase fluid heat-transfer circuit in heat-conducting contact through a thermoelectric device. A vapor compression cycle provides a first stage of cooling and the thermoelectric device in conjunction with the heat-transfer circuit provides the second stage of cooling. Polarity of the thermoelectric device can be reversed to provide a defrost function for the refrigeration system.

A method includes operating the refrigeration system in a cooling mode wherein a space is conditioned, and also includes transferring heat from a heat-transfer circuit to a thermoelectric device to a refrigeration circuit. A method further includes operating the refrigeration system in a defrost mode of operation including transferring heat through the thermoelectric device to the heat-transfer circuit to a heat exchanger.

A method of conditioning a space with a refrigeration system includes circulating a first heat sink for a first side of a thermoelectric device and circulating a second heat sink for a second side of the thermoelectric device. The method also includes transferring heat between the first heat sink and the second heat sink to condition the space.

Capacity modulated scroll machine having one or more pin members movably

The microprocessor-based HVAC control system detects sensor faults by comparing thermistor readings with predetermined extreme values, indicative of sensor fault. The system automatically selects the appropriate combination of automatic/preset modes of operating key system components such as the expansion valve, the demand defrost system and the indoor fan speed control system. With a view towards minimizing any negative impact on system performance and reliability in the event of sensor malfunction.
