A hammer mill (10) having a feeder section (14) connected vertically above a mill section (12) such that feed material from a feed supply containing tramp metal (46) is introduced into the feed section and is divided therein into discrete quantities which are poured at a predetermined rate into the mill section. A continuously rotating feeder member (28) is situated in the vertically upper portion of the feeder section, the feeder member including means (40) for transporting a discrete quantity of feed material from a first position where the quantity is separated from the feed supply to a second position where the quantity is poured toward the mill section. A continuously rotating drum magnet (44) is situated below the rotating feeder member such that the quantities of feed material fall toward the drum magnet as the quantities are poured. In this manner, the tramp metal in the feed material is magnetically captured by the drum magnet and the remainder of the feed material falls into the mill section. The tramp metal is detached from the drum either passively as a result of differential magnetization of the drum, or actively by a wiper blade or air stream.

A rotary cutter comprises a housing having a base portion, a cover portion, and a working chamber defined therebetween. The cover portion has laterally extending side flanges adapted to mate and bolt to the upper surface of the base portion. A generally cylindrical rotor having a plurality of knives mounted about its periphery is mounted to a shaft horizontally disposed within the working chamber and adapted for rotation about its longitudinal axis. An inlet feed tube is mounted to the cover portion of the housing for feeding a material to be shredded into the working chamber. Camrolls are mounted to the four corners cover of the housing along the lateral side flanges thereof for translating the cover portion of the housing parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rotor along track means associated with the base portion of the housing along which the top portion of the housing may be translated on the camroll means. The track means has a first track portion comprising the lateral extending flat upper surface on each side of the base portion of the housing and a second track portion comprising a pair of lateral spaced rails extending axially outward from the end of the base portion of the housing. The rails are positioned to receive the cover portion of the housing when the cover portion has been translated axially along the first track portion of the track means thereby opening the working chamber to expose and provide access to the horizontal rotor.

An automatic volume control system for controlling the rate at which fluid, such as paint, is sprayed from spray guns on a mobile vehicle as a function of vehicle speed. The device permits paint lines to be maintained at a uniform thickness independently of the vehicle speed. A tachometer generator generates a voltage proportional to the vehicle road speed which voltage controls the opening of an adjustable hydraulic valve. Hydraulic fluid passing through the hydraulic valve drives a hydraulic generator which in turn drives a spray gun system. The voltage from the tachometer generator thereby causes the hydraulic fluid to drive the hydraulic motor and paint pump at a rate which is proportional to the vehicle road speed. The hydraulic fluid is suitably pumped through the hydraulic valve to the hydraulic motor by a hydraulic pump driven by the power take-off of the vehicle. By using a flow divider valve connected between the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic motor, two separate and parallel independently controllable painting systems may be provided. An intermittent line mechanism powered by the vehicle road wheels, is connected to the spray guns and to hydraulic motor bypass valves in order to provide line patterns which are independent of vehicle road speed.

Automatic volume control system

The apparatus provides an internal means for spraying and heating quick drying traffic paint to a minimum temperature of 120.degree. F. utilizing a primary heat collector within which engine liquid is in thermal communication with engine exhaust gases and heated compressed air. Such heated engine liquid is then used as a heat transfer medium to elevate the temperature of quick drying traffic paint within a shell and tube heat exchanger.
