A vehicle having an air pre-cleaner coupled with an engine enclosure such that the air inlet to the air pre-cleaner is positioned beneath the top wall of the engine enclosure and receives air from a duct within the enclosure, and the debris outlet of the air pre-cleaner is located above the top wall of the engine enclosure.

Air cleaner and hood ducting arrangement

An industrial loader includes a fan and radiator assembly mounted above the engine thereof. The assembly comprises a housing mounted on the loader main frame. A pair of radiator cores are located in opposite sides of the housing. A pair of fore-and-aft aligned, hydraulically driven fans are mounted in the housing and operate to draw cooling air in through the cores and discharge it vertically through the top of the housing.

An emergency or backup steering system includes a backup pump which is driven by an electric motor. A control circuit for the motor automatically energizes it upon the main supply of hydraulic power steering fluid becoming inadequate for normal steering operation. The control circuit provides for checkout of the portions thereof governing actuation of the backup system and provides for indicating failure in the backup system of both the electrical and hydraulic portions thereof.

Vehicle emergency steering system

A pair of return fluid filters are supported within a main cavity of a hydraulic fluid reservoir for receiving fluid from the bottoms of respective return fluid cavities defined by a housing fixed to a top wall of the reservoir. Respective access covers close the cavities and are connected to the return fluid filters and to respective removable bottom plates of the cavities such that the filters may be withdrawn from the main cavity, via the return fluid cavities, for service or replacement. Each cavity is provided with a bypass valve which acts to bypass return fluid directly from the associated return fluid cavity to the main cavity in the event that the associated filter becomes clogged. Mounted on the housing in alignment with the bypass valves are respective switches which are respectively operated in response to movement of the bypass valves to their bypass position to energize a light to indicate the clogged filter condition to an operator.

An emergency steering system includes a backup pump which is driven by an electric motor, a control circuit for the motor includes a flow sensing switch and a pressure-sensing switch connected in series and operative to automatically energize the motor when a main pump is outputting no flow and the pressure at the pump outlet is below a predetermined minimum value for adequate steering operation.

The accoustic noise suppression apparatus is mounted opposite a radiator which is in fluid communication with a liquid cooled internal combustion engine having fan generated air flow through the radiator to encounter the noise suppression apparatus. The noise suppression apparatus is tri-sectional, each section including accoustic energy absorbing material. The noise suppression apparatus alter the flow path of the fan driven air flow, exhausting the air to the surrounding environment while decreasing the amount of accoustic noise received by the surrounding environment.

A fuel flow control lever is pivotably mounted for movement between fuel-off and fuel-on positions wherein it respectively engages first and second stops. A solenoid has its plunger linked to the control lever and when the solenoid is deenergized, a spring acting on the plunger holds the latter in an extended position wherein it holds the lever in its fuel-off position. A pair of coils surround the plunger and are selectively simultaneously energizable to retract the plunger to effect movement of the lever to its fuel-on position. The linkage between the plunger and lever is yieldable and the lever reaches its fuel-on position prior to the plunger becoming fully retracted. Upon the plunger becoming fully retracted, a normally closed switch is opened to de-energize one of the coils.

Solenoid-operated fuel flow control for fuel injection system

An electro hydraulic system for controlling a hydraulic function includes a pump and a reservoir connected to the function through a manually operable, electro-hydraulic control valve. The valve is positionable to either side of a neutral ports blocked position and may be held to one side by the engaging of a spring loaded detent. The detent is disengaged by an electrical signal produced by a comparator when a preset, operator-controlled, limiting signal is equalled by a feed back sensor signal proportional to the output of the function. The system will allow initial activation of the valve to provide continuous operation of the function until the limiting input is reached at which time the function will be stopped. The system further provides manual override of the electrical control system to permit operation of the valve when the feedback signal is greater than the limiting input signal.

Hydraulic system

A hydraulic fluid reservoir is provided on a vehicle for containing fluid for use in the hydraulic system of the vehicle. The hydraulic reservoir is mounted between an upright wall forming a part of the vehicle operator's station and the backside of a water-cooled internal combustion engine. Coupled to the engine on the side remote from the reservoir is a blower-type fan. The reservoir is provided with a centrally located air duct means aligned with the engine and blower fan and the reservoir is so located that the engine-driven fan draws air around and through the reservoir to provide forced convection cooling of the fluid contained in the reservoir. The air duct means are so located relative to outlet and inlet ports of the reservoir that fluid flowing from the inlet to the outlet port will be deflected or baffled by the duct means.
