Disclosed is an improved sealing element for a regenerative heat exchanging apparatus, such as a Ljungstrom.TM.-type or a Rothemuhle.TM.-type Preheater. The sealing element is mounted to a radial wall to provide a secure seal between the radial wall and an outer housing of the heat exchanging apparatus and prevent leakage between the hot gas conduit and cool air conduit. In a preferred embodiment, the sealing element includes a reinforced mounting strip that is used to mount the sealing element to the radial wall. The sealing element also includes a sealing strip that maintains a sealing contact between the radial wall and outer housing. A set of bellows is positioned on the sealing element to provide the sealing element with flexibility and resiliency so that the sealing element maintains contact with the sealing surface even when the heat exchanging apparatus experiences warping from thermal distortion.

Sealing element for a regenerative heat exchanger

A seal for a regenerative air preheater. The seal is comprised of two members that each have a plurality of tabs and slots. The tabs and slots interlock so that the tabs on one member are positioned adjacent the slots on the other member. Further, the tabs have a narrow neck section and a wider sealing section. The wider sealing sections overlay and the narrow neck sections are positioned within a recessed region of the notch on the opposite member so as to interlock the two members. Preferably, the neck sections do not significantly overlap thereby providing greater flexibility for each of the tabs. The seal is mounted either to the rotor or to the inner wall of the housing so as to extend through the bypass gap between the rotor and the inner wall of the housing. As the tabs are flexible, the tabs can resiliently deform as a result of the tabs making contact with the sealing surface of the heat exchanger.

Perimeter sealing element for regenerative heat exchanger

A heat exchange module comprises a rotating-wheel type regenerative heat exchanger unit having a plurality of heat exchange elements mounted in baskets through the volume of the heat exchanger wheel. The heat exchanger wheel rotates about its axis so that the heat exchange elements are heated by a hot gas flow over a portion of the rotation, and transfer the heat to an air flow over another portion of the rotation. At least some of the heat exchange elements include phase change materials, such as salts, that absorb heat while maintaining a constant temperature. The phase change materials narrow the range of temperatures reached by the heat exchange elements located at various positions of the heat exchanger wheel. The phase change materials prevent excessively low temperatures that can result in condensation of corrosive acids on the surfaces of the heat exchange elements. They can also stabilize the heat exchange elements in particularly desirable temperature ranges for the operation of catalysts coated onto the heat exchange elements.

Temperature-stabilized heat exchanger

The NOx content in a flow of flue gas is reduced by passing the flue gas through a first treatment zone and a second treatment zone. A nitrogeneous treatment agent is introduced into the first treatment zone for the selective non-catalytic reduction of part of the NOx, and the flue gas is thereafter passed through the second treatment zone which includes a catalyst for further selective catalytic reduction of the NOx. Optionally, a second nitrogeneous treatment agent is added to the flue gas in the second treatment zone. The quantity of NOx in the flue gas is detected intermediate the first and second treatment zones and, optionally, after the flue gas has left the second treatment zone. The quantity of ammonia in the flue gas exiting from the second treatment zone is also detected. The amounts of the treatment agents added to the flue gas are controlled responsive to the variations and absolute levels determined by these measurements.

Control of NOx reduction in flue gas flows

The volumetric flow rate for the addition of a flue gas conditioning agent, such as sulfur trioxide, is established by maintaining the derivative of the electrostatic precipitator power with respect to flow rate within a preselected operating range. The derivative of the precipitator power with respect to time and the derivative of the flow rate with respect to time are measured, and then the derivatives are divided to determine the derivative of precipitator power with respect to flow rate. This calculated value is compared with a preselected operating range. If the calculated value is greater than the preselected operating range, the flow rate of the conditioning agent is increased. If the calculated value is less than the preselected operating range, the flow rate is reduced, until a steady state calculated derivative value within the operating range is reached.
