A positive crankcase ventilation valve includes a flow restrictor movable in an orifice to vary flow of fumes from an engine crankcase to an intake manifold in a vehicle. The valve also includes a temperature-activated element for moving the flow restrictor in the orifice.

Thermostat

An apparatus is provided for controlling the temperature of an engine based on a temperature control signal generated by an electronic control module of the engine. The electronic control module is coupled to a plurality of sensors configured to detect a plurality of engine component parameters and is configured to generate the temperature control signal related to an optimum engine temperature calculated using at least one output signal from at least one of the plurality of sensors. The apparatus includes a controller coupled to the electronic control module and to an engine temperature sensor. The controller generates an output signal based on the temperature control signal received from the electronic control module and on a signal proportional to the actual engine temperature received from the engine temperature sensor. The apparatus also includes an electronically actuated thermostat including a valve located within a coolant flow passageway of the engine and a motor electrically coupled to the controller. The motor is configured to open and close the valve to control flow of a coolant fluid in the coolant flow passageway in response to the output signal from the controller.

Electronically controlled engine cooling apparatus

A thermostat includes a valve movable from a closed position to an open position to permit fluid flow through a conduit in an engine. The valve is formed to include a vent opening defined by a wall. The thermostat also includes an actuator for selectively opening and closing the valve, an elastomeric material located on the valve covering the wall defining the vent opening, and a jiggle pin located in the vent opening.

Valve venting apparatus

An apparatus is provided for filling an engine cooling system with coolant fluid and for controlling fluid flow through the cooling system using three dimensional weirs in response to changes of an engine cooling system temperature. The apparatus includes a fill housing having an inlet section, an outlet section, and a fill section configured to receive a cap thereon. The inlet section is formed to include a valve seat and a flange for coupling the fill housing to an engine. The apparatus also includes a thermostat and means for coupling the thermostat to the flange to hold the thermostat within the inlet section beneath an outer surface of the flange. The fill housing is formed to include a venturi portion located between the inlet section and the outlet section to provide a pressure drop in the fill housing as fluid flows through the fill housing. The venturi portion is located adjacent the fill section to subject the fill section to the pressure drop as fluid flows through the fill housing.

A fail-safe thermostat includes a stationary valve member configured to be positioned between conduit components of the engine cooling system, a movable valve member for engaging the valve seat to block fluid flow into the conduit through the opening, an operating spring for biasing the movable valve member to a closed position against the valve seat of the stationary valve member, and a thermally responsive actuator for moving the movable valve member to an open position away from a valve seat when the ambient temperature exceeds a first predetermined temperature to permit fluid flow into the conduit. The apparatus further includes a bimetallic frame member coupled the stationary valve member. The frame member is configured to compress and hold the operating spring in engagement with the movable valve member. The frame member is configured to disengage itself from the stationary valve member when the ambient temperature exceeds a second predetermined temperature and upon failure of the movable valve member to move to its the open position.

Fail-safe thermostat

Valve seat structure for an automotive thermostatic fluid control valve device which is adapted to be positioned within a coolant fluid conduit system of an automotive engine. The valve seat structure has a rigid fluid flow control member which includes a cylindrical wall which forms a fluid flow passage. The rigid fluid flow control member also has an annular base which encompasses the cylindrical wall. An elastomeric sealing member resiliently encompasses the cylindrical wall. The elastomeric sealing member has an abutment portion and a clamping portion. Preferably, the abutment portion and the clamping portion are separated by a shoulder. A rigid clamping member has a clamping portion which is in engagement with the clamping portion of the elastomeric sealing member and is adapted to be clampingly engaged by a part of the coolant fluid conduit system. The rigid clamping member also has a shoulder portion which engages the shoulder of the elastomeric sealing member. The valve seat structure is adapted to be clamped between two portions of the coolant fluid conduit to maintain the position of the valve seat structure within the coolant fluid conduit. Thus, the rigid clamping member firmly retains the elastomeric sealing member with respect to the fluid flow control member. The abutment portion of the elastomeric sealing member is also engageable by a movable valve member to control fluid flow through the fluid flow passage.

A pressure compensated temperature switch for the protection of an internal combustion engine or the like. The switch unit includes a housing, a portion of which is positioned within a passage in the cooling system of the internal combustion engine. Within the housing is a pressure sensitive member. The pressure sensitive member senses both the temperature and the pressure of the coolant fluid in the coolant system of the internal combustion engine. A visual and/or audible alarm device, which is connected to a switch unit of this invention, thus operates when temperature conditions exist within an engine which are harmful to the engine.

Valve seat structure for an automotive thermostatic fluid control valve device. The valve seat structure comprises a rigid fluid flow control member which includes a cylindrical wall which forms a fluid flow passage and an annular base which encompasses the cylindrical wall. An elastomeric sealing member or engagement member resiliently encompasses the cylindrical wall and is clamped between two portions of a fluid conduit to position the valve seat structure within the fluid conduit. The elastomeric sealing member is also engageable by a movable valve member to control fluid flow through the fluid flow passage. The cylindrical wall extends beyond the elastomeric sealing member and protects the elastomeric sealing member against the forces of fluid flow.

Fail-safe oil flow control apparatus of this invention includes a thermally responsive actuator for operation of a valve member to control oil flow through a heat exchanger in accordance with the oil temperature conditions which exist. The apparatus also includes resilient members which operate to control operation of the valve member in accordance with the oil pressure conditions which exist. The apparatus also includes a fusible body which melts and permits operation of the valve member when excessive temperatures exist in the apparatus.
