According to one embodiment, an adjustable power capacity Power Supply Unit (PSU) includes a circuit coupled within a feedback loop of the PSU that is controlled by an internal processing system. The feedback loop configured to carry a feedback signal for regulating an output power of the PSU. The processing system includes executable instructions that may be executed to receive an output power capacity set point that represents a programmed output power rating of the PSU, and control the circuit to modify the feedback signal so that the PSU generates output power at the programmed output power rating. The programmed output power rating set on the PSU being less than an actual output power rating of the PSU.

Adjustable power capacity power supply unit (PSU) system and method

An information handling system includes a power supply unit having a power train configured to convert electrical energy received by the power supply unit into electrical energy usable by the information handling system and a microcontroller that includes non-volatile memory holding a line status register. The microcontroller is configured to set or reset the power supply unit for high line only operation, and the information handling system is configured to notify the power supply unit microcontroller to set or reset the power supply unit for high line only operation.

If the PSU is established as a High-Line power supply and is a dual wattage unit, Low-Line capabilities are disabled and the PSU turns off if power drops below a High-Line minimum voltage. System and method of utilizing LLC converters

An information handling system includes a power supply and a baseboard management controller (BMC). The power supply includes an input power monitor module and a communication interface. The input power monitor module is configured to detect a total harmonic distortion (THD) on a power input to the power supply, to determine that the THD is greater than a THD threshold, and to provide an indication that the THD is greater than the THD threshold on the communication interface. The BMC is coupled to the communication interface, and is configured to receive the first indication and to enter an item into a log of the information handling system in response to receiving the indication.

System and method for using input power line telemetry in an information handling system

An information handling system has power supply units (PSUs), each of which includes an input over current warning (OCW) setting that provides a reference for an amount of an input current drawn by a corresponding workload. Each of the PSUs sends an interrupt to a baseboard management controller (BMC) when the amount of the input current drawn by the corresponding workload exceeds the corresponding configured input OCW setting. In response to the received interrupt, the BMC requests an adjustment to the corresponding workload.

In some embodiments, a method may include: identifying a mismatch between a first Power Supply Unit (PSU) and a second PSU in an Information Handling System (IHS), disabling the first PSU, determining that a voltage at an input line of the first PSU follows a predetermined pattern while the first PSU receives a secondary bias from the second PSU, and enabling the first PSU.

Managing the operation of power supply units (PSUs)

A system may implement a method for determining the operating capability of a power supply based on multiple environmental factors. Information about environmental factors may be obtained from sensors in the power supply or received from a management controller. These environmental factors may include temperature, line voltage, backpressure, or altitude. A power supply capability analyzer within the power supply may determine that, based on the environmental conditions, it is safe to increase the operating capability of the power supply, or that the operating capability of the power supply should be decreased. After determining the best operating capability for the power supply, it may be communicated to the management controller, after which it may affect the allocation of power in the system. Similar adjustments in operating capabilities may be made for all power supplies in a system or adjustments may be made to individual power supplies based on local environmental conditions.

An information handling system (IHS) automatically responds to a change in cooling medium that cools functional components. A cooling medium sensor senses a material characteristic of the cooling medium. A thermal management controller determines whether the material characteristic received from the cooling medium sensor is in one of a first range that is associated with the air cooling medium and a second range that is associated with the liquid cooling medium. In response to determining that the material characteristic is within the second range, the thermal management controller disables a thermal mitigation component that reduces a temperature of the functional components of the IHS.

A method, system, and information handling system provides better system power consumption of a redundant power system having a plurality of power supply units (PSUs) by taking into consideration each PSU's sleep power consumption during selection of one or more PSUs to place into a 'hot spare' sleep mode. For each PSU, power efficiency data at different load ratings are measured and stored. During the PSU selection, a calculation of system power consumption is conducted on each of several configurations where a different PSU is hypothetically disabled. Each calculation takes into consideration both the sleep power consumption of a disabled PSU and power efficiency data of an enabled PSU. Selection of one or more PSUs to disable is determined according to the configuration yielding the lower or lowest system input power consumption based on the results of the calculations.
