The present disclosure describes a cost-effective earplug device that delivers minimally distorted sound, offers sound protection, can fit most users, and can protect human hearing from dangerously-high acoustic levels without the cost or inconvenience of a custom earplug.

Pair of in-ear appliances

Earphone devices with a sealing section for acoustically sealing the meatus of a human ear are provided. An earphone device includes an inner ear canal speaker and an inner ear canal microphone, each connected to a logic circuit which can include a digital signal processor (DSP). A sealant element is operatively attached to an outer section of the earphone and acoustically seals the meatus of a human ear canal.

Methods and apparatus for measuring ear canal wall pressure comfort level are provided. An expandable pressure exertion device is inserted into an orifice. The device is expanded inside the orifice in increments of pressure. A threshold level is saved where a user indicates that the pressure exerted against the walls of the orifice is becoming at least one of uncomfortable, painful, and noticeable.
