A household appliance has an air flow path extending from an air inlet to an air outlet with a fan and motor assembly in the air flow path. The fan and motor assembly comprises a motor drivingly connected to a rotating fan blade subassembly. The fan and motor assembly is adjustable between a first configuration in which the rotating fan blade subassembly provides a first level of air flow and a first level of suction and a second configuration in which the rotating fan blade subassembly provides a second level of air flow and a second level of suction wherein the first level of air flow is higher than the second level of air flow and the second level of suction is higher than the first level of suction.

A cyclone separator useable in a surface cleaning apparatus comprises a cyclone chamber and a dirt collection chamber exterior to, and surrounding at least a portion of the cyclone chamber. An air flow passage extending to the cyclone air inlet travels generally axially through the dirt collection chamber.

The vacuum cleaner is docked with the apparatus by a user moving the dirt collection region in a downward direction to a position in which, during the emptying mode of operation, the flow of air conveys the dirt from the dirt collection region of the vacuum cleaner downwardly to the air treatment member of the apparatus.

The sidewall of the first air treatment stage is moveable with respect to the suction motor and, when the sidewall is moved with respect to the suction motor, the front openable door and the dirty air inlet also move with the sidewall.
