A method of forming structure on a component includes: providing a component having a first surface; adhering powder to the first surface; and directing a beam from a directed energy source to fuse the powder in a pattern corresponding to a layer of the structure.

Additive manufacturing on 3-D components

A method for providing an anti-coking coating system on a surface at elevated temperatures when contacted by a hydrocarbon fluid, for example, a surface of an interior fuel passage within a fuel nozzle of a type utilized in gas turbine engines, is disclosed. The surface of the passage is rough as a result of the passage being part of a component manufactured by an additive manufacturing (AM) process. In addition, the passage may have a complex geometry of a type that can be fabricated with AM processes, for example, geometries comprising combinations of sharp bends and narrow cross-sections. The coating system comprises at least one ceramic barrier layer and an outermost metallic layer, each of which is formed using a conformal vapor deposition process.

Articles having coatings that are resistant to high temperature degradation are described, along with methods for making such articles. The article comprises a coating disposed on a substrate. The coating comprises a plurality of elongated surface-connected voids. The article further includes a protective agent disposed within at least some of the voids of the coating; the protective agent comprises a substance capable of chemically reacting with liquid nominal CMAS to form a solid crystalline product outside the crystallization field of said nominal CMAS. This solid crystalline product has a melting temperature greater than about 1200 degrees Celsius. The method generally includes disposing the protective agent noted above within the surface connected voids of the coating at an effective concentration to substantially prevent incursion of CMAS materials into the voids in which the protective agent is disposed.

A seal system, for an apparatus that includes a rotatable portion with airfoils coupled thereto and a stationary portion with an inner surface, includes an abradable portion including at least one abradable layer of an abradable material formed over the inner surface. The seal system also includes an abrading portion disposed over at least a portion of a substrate of the airfoil. The abrading portion includes at least one abrading layer formed on at least a portion of the substrate and a plurality of abrasive particles embedded within the abrading layer. The plurality of abrasive particles includes at least one of substantially all of one of tantalum carbide (TaC), aluminum oxide (AlO), and ziconia (ZrO), cubic boron nitride (cBN) and AlOin predetermined ratios, cBN, AlOand ZrOin predetermined ratios, AlOand ZrOfused together in predetermined ratios, and TaC and AlOin predetermined ratios.

Seal systems for use in turbomachines and methods of fabricating the same

A capacitive sensor device and a method of manufacture are provided. The capacitive sensor device includes at least one sensor tip that includes an electrode positioned at a first end of the sensor tip, and a stem member coupled to the electrode and extending toward a second end of the sensor tip. The device also includes a coaxial cable including a center conductor, the center conductor coupled to the sensor tip at the second end, and an insulation layer supporting the sensor tip between the first and second ends. The insulation layer includes a metallization on a portion surrounding the second end of the sensor tip. The device further includes a casing surrounding a portion of the coaxial cable, the metallization, and the coupling of the center conductor and the sensor tip, wherein a braze joint is formed between the casing and the metallization to form a hollow, hermetic cavity.

A manufacturing method includes providing a substrate with an outer surface and at least one interior space and machining the substrate to selectively remove a portion of the substrate and define one or more cooling supply holes therein. Each of the one or more cooling supply holes is in fluid communication with the at least one interior space. The method further includes disposing an open cell porous metallic layer on at least a portion of the substrate. The open cell porous metallic layer is in fluid communication with the one or more cooling supply holes. A coating layer is disposed on the open cell porous metallic layer. The coating layer having formed therein one or more cooling exit holes in fluid communication with the open cell porous metallic layer. The substrate, the one or more cooling supply holes, the open cell porous metallic layer and the cooling exit holes providing a cooling network for a component.

The sensor output is processed as a clearance parameter by an offset correction section configured to determine an offset error in the clearance parameter signal which is used by a level shifter. The level shifter is also switchably coupled to the clearance parameter signal wherein the output of the level shifter, which may be amplified and digitally converted, is processed by a signal level analyzer to determine a channel gain signal.

A composite element is provided. The composite element includes a ceramic component defining a cavity having a first end and a second end, and a metallic component comprising a head and a body. A processing system for clearance estimation in a rotating machine includes one or more sensors and one or more digital signal processors for calculating the estimated clearance. The processing system may include techniques for obtaining real-time clearance estimates and techniques for obtaining averaged clearance estimates. Aspects of the processing system may also include a method of switching between real-time clearance estimates and averaged clearance estimates depending on the operating conditions of the rotating machine. Other aspects of the processing system include the use of two digital signal processors: a first digital signal processor configured to receive signals from a clearance sensor and perform a first set of high speed processing tasks, and a second digital signal processor configured to receive signals from the first digital signal processor and perform a second set of lower speed processing tasks.

System and method for clearance estimation between two objects

A composite element is provided. The composite element includes a ceramic component defining a cavity having a first end and a second end, and a metallic component that includes a head and a body. At least a portion of the body of the metallic component is disposed in the cavity, and the head of the component is disposed on the first end of the cavity. A cross-sectional area of a portion of the body is greater than an area of the first end. In addition, the ceramic and metallic components are interlocked. Methods of making a composite element and of making a clearance sensor part are also provided.
