According to one aspect of the invention, the PASS-Tracker is a hand-held device that improves the ability of a rescuer to quickly locate a distressed firefighter by two processes: (1) detecting and recognizing the acoustic alarm sound from a PASS device in Alarm Mode, and (2) providing an indication to rescue personnel of the shortest path to the victim. The invention does not require a pre-installed infrastructure in a particular building; rather the device can be used in an ad hoc fashion at any fire scene. The PASS-Tracker utilizes a plurality of small microphones to detect the acoustic signal from the PASS device. Internal electronics in the PASS-Tracker measure the time-of-arrival (TOA) of the leading edge of the acoustic wave at each microphone and calculate and display the angle-of-arrival (AOA) of the wave.

Precision pyrotechnic display system and method having increased safety and timing accuracy

An ultrasonic signal is used to link a beacon unit to a tracker unit to provide a tracking and navigation system for firefighters to use in a smoke filled environment at the scene of a fire. The beacon unit transmits an omnidirectional ultrasonic signal. The tracker unit, using a directional ultrasonic receiver provides a display or other indication of the signal strength of the received ultrasonic signal to allow the direction to the beacon unit to be determined. The ultrasonic signal provided by the beacon unit may be pulse modulated to include digitally encoded data that may be used to identify particular individuals, objects, materials, dangers, or exits. In addition, the tracker unit may be provided with a transmitter and the beacon unit provided with a receiver such that audio communication may be established therebetween.

Tracking, safety and navigation system for firefighters

A circuit and system for sensing and measuring the mutual capacitance between a sensor capacitor having one grounded lead and a target and providing a direct digital output of the measured capacitance is disclosed. The circuit and system includes a relaxation oscillator coupled to a sensor capacitor and a fixed resistor. The fixed resistor and the sensor capacitor in conjunction with the relaxation oscillator provide a time varying output signal that has a period that is proportional to the mutual capacitance of the sensor capacitor and a target and resistance of the fixed resistor. The circuit and system can also include circuitry to compensate for the input capacitance of one or more amplifiers used in the relaxation oscillator. The circuit and system can also include circuitry to effectively increase the resistance of the fixed resistor by a predetermined constant. This allows a smaller resistance value for the fixed resistor to be used with the concomitant reduction in the size of the fixed resistor, which reduces the parasitic capacitance of the fixed resistor. A guard electrode can be formed coaxially surrounding the fixed resistor and coupled to an input amplifier in the circuit to further reduce the parallel parasitic capacitance of the fixed resistor. An interval timer can be coupled to the output of the relaxation oscillator to provide an accurate measurement of the period of the output signal. This value, or the frequency of the output signal, may be used by a calculation module to accurately determine the value of the mutual capacitance and the value of the measured variable. In addition, the system may include predetermined calibration signals that are used as correction values.

Digital measurement circuit and system using a grounded capacitive sensor

A system and method are disclosed for controlling the launch and burst of pyrotechnic projectiles in a pyrotechnic, or &ldquo;fireworks&rdquo;, display.

A capacitive pressure sensor includes a chamber coupled to a region whose pressure is to be determined. The sensor includes a conductive flexible diaphragm and a pair of electrodes, each defining a capacitance with the diaphragm. Variations in pressure in the chamber cause deflection of the diaphragm which in turn causes variation in the capacitances. A processing circuit applies an excitation signal to the capacitances and couples the capacitances to inductive elements. A current through the inductive elements is detected to determine the difference in the sensor capacitances and, therefore, the deflection of the diaphragm and the pressure in the chamber.

Capacitive pressure sensing method and apparatus avoiding interelectrode

An array of ultrasonic transducers, where each of the ultrasonic transducers has a matching layer end and a driving layer/individually isolated end. A bump bond connects each one of the ultrasonic transducers to a substrate. A high voltage electrical conductor is connected to at least one driving layer/individually isolated end to provide a drive signal to at least one of the ultrasonic transducers. A conductive/matching layer is disposed to electrically connect each matching layer end. An outer matching layer is connected to the conductive/matching layer. The bump bond is an indium or solder bump bond having a contact area for contact with an ultrasonic transducer less than 20 percent of the driving layer/individually isolated end for the contacted ultrasonic transducer so as to provide mechanical stability while reducing cross talk among the plurality of ultrasonic transducers.

Ultrasonic array with attenuating electrical interconnects

The measuring device of the invention uses a capacitor polarized by a continuous voltage and conditioned by a continuous charge amplifier, this charge amplifier having a high-band filter structure, preferably of the second order. The technology of the capacitor and the linking cable is coaxial. The tuning of the chain measurement is effected theoretically without needing standardization.

A first moment detector is provided which receives the electrical output from the transducer and provides a first moment signal. Normalization is provided to the output of the first moment detector to provide an electrical output representing a characteristic of the flow of the liquid in the vessel.

Device for measuring volumetric blood flow in a vessel comprising a catheter having proximal and distal extremities. A balloon is carried by the distal extremity of the catheter. A balloon inflation lumen is carried by the catheter and is in communication with the balloon. A toroidal ultrasonic transducer is carried by the catheter and is spaced proximally of the balloon. Electrical circuitry is provided for supplying electrical energy to the transducer. The transducer produces a large substantially uniform beam of ultrasonic energy to illuminate a vessel of approximately three centimeters in diameter with the ultrasonic energy.
