An apparatus is provided for performing multiple operations on a conventional open-die forge press, and includes a rotatable top punch assembly and stationary bottom die assembly. The top punch assembly includes a mounting fixture secured to the press crosshead, a holder plate rotatably mounted on the fixture, a plurality of punches extending downwardly from the holder plate, and motor means for indexing the punches sequentially into forging position over the bottom die assembly. A method is also provided for making valve pots, including upsetting a heated metal block in a split die and punching a hole through the block, the improvement in which during the upsetting step a vertically reciprocable member is extended so as to close a bottom opening in the split die, in order that the split die will function as a closed die, and during the punching step the reciprocable member is retracted so as to allow a punch-core to fall through said opening. This permits faster production rates since less handling of the dies is required.

Method and apparatus for performing multiple closed and semi-closed

A method is provided for making single crank throws for built-up crankshafts. The method includes heating an elongated workpiece having a saddle-shaped central area on one surface thereof and forming the workpiece into V-shape by pushing it with a punch into a first-forming die having legs angled between 35 and 65 degrees. The punch is V-shape with opposed surfaces inclined at substantially the same angle as the first-forming die. The workpiece is then reheated and pushed with a punch into a second-forming die having inwardly converging surfaces at an outer portion of the cavity and parallel sidewalls joining the inner end of the outer die surfaces. The apparatus includes a bottom die having a long generally rectangular cavity and top die punch rotatably mounted about a vertical axis on the underside of the press crosshead and a motor drive for rotating the top die punch to alternate positions for forging opposite halves of the workpiece in the lengthwise direction.

Method and apparatus for making single cranks for built-up crankshafts

A method is provided for preventing distortion of a heated cylindrical metal workpiece during cooling. The method includes heating the workpiece and then placing a fixture substantially at room temperature in the workpiece. The fixture has a plurality of axially-spaced holder plates with shoe members slidably mounted at spaced locations on the plates. A plurality of tapered pin assemblies are used to secure each shoe member in fixed position initially so as to define the desired cold shape of the workpiece. The workpiece is then cooled with the fixture in place. After cooling of the workpiece, the tapered pin assemblies are partially withdrawn from tapered holes in the shoe members and holder plates so as to permit removal of the fixture from the workpiece.

A method and mechanism for forming a hole through a forged workpiece. During the forging operation an indentation is formed in the upper surface of the workpiece. While the workpiece remains in the forging press, a trepanning tool is placed in the indentation and the top die of the press is used to force the tool almost through the workpiece leaving a thin wall at the bottom of the hole. The workpiece either may be removed from the press while the wall is knocked out to complete the hole, or preferably the workpiece remains in the press and the top die is used to knock out the wall. If the workpiece remains in the press, preferably it is supported on a locating ring which aligns the workpiece and trepanning tool with the top die. Also disclosed is an improved trepanning tool which has external and internal sloping faces extending around its circumference at its lower end.

The invention is an improvement over a press and method disclosed in an earlier patent in which a rectangular set of top dies is used with a circular set of bottom dies, and the bottom dies are indexed through a pattern of arcs to move a workpiece successively to positions in which it is forged throughout its area. The present invention utilizes a set of bottom dies which is of larger diameter than that of the indexing means and has overhanging edge portions. These portions are additionally supported at diametrically opposed locations where the force of the top dies is absorbed.
