A character input device provides a function of deleting an unconfirmed inputted character which the user is currently inputting, and a function of changing a confirmed character string to an unconfirmed state to a single correction key. Therefore, the character input device enables the user to carry out a character input efficiently by using limited space without requiring an excessive operation and arrangement of a new key for reconversion. Further, because the character input device holds the information on confirmed character strings even after all the character strings have been confirmed, the character input device enables the user to arbitrarily select a character string which the user wants to correct at any time, and re-edit only the portion.

A navigation system capable of enabling a user to use navigation functions such as route guidance without setting a destination. It includes an information recording unit for storing a driving history, a destination estimating unit for estimating a destination from the driving history stored in the information recording unit, a route computing unit for calculating a route to the destination estimated by the destination estimating unit, and an information display unit for causing the route calculated by the route computing unit to be displayed.

A navigation device includes a map information acquiring unitandfor acquiring map information, a positioning unitfor measuring a vehicle position, an input unitandfor inputting a search condition for a search for facilities which are search objects, a facility searching unitfor, when the vehicle position measured by the positioning unit is located on a dedicated road whose exits and entrances are predetermined, searching through the map information acquired by the map information acquiring unit for facilities existing on the dedicated road and facilities existing at a predetermined distance or less from an exit of the dedicated road, those facilities satisfying the search condition inputted from the input unit, and a display unitandfor displaying the facilities searched for by the facility searching unit in order of increasing distance from the vehicle position measured by the positioning unit.

A sign recognition device includes a sign effective range data recording unit for prestoring effective range conditions shown by a sign and an auxiliary sign, a sign recognition unit for recognizing a sign and an auxiliary sign by using a captured image of a roadway in front of a vehicle, a vehicle information acquiring unit for acquiring vehicle information, a map information acquiring unit for acquiring map information about a map of an area surrounding the vehicle, and a sign effective range determining unit for determining whether or not the vehicle is staying in the effective range specified with the sign and the auxiliary sign which have been recognized by the sign recognition unit by using the effective range conditions stored in the sign effective range data recording unit, the vehicle information, and the map information.
